Genesis 4
WEB·Genesis 4
1The man knew Eve his wife. She conceived, and gave birth to Cain, and said, “I have gotten a man with Yahweh’s help.”
KJVAnd AdamH120 knewH3045(H8804)H853 EveH2332 his wifeH802; and she conceivedH2029(H8799), and bareH3205(H8799)H853 CainH7014, and saidH559(H8799), I have gottenH7069(H8804) a manH376 fromH854 the LORDH3068.
2 Again she gave birth, to Cain’s brother Abel. Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.
KJVAnd she againH3254(H8686) bareH3205(H8800) his brotherH251 AbelH1893. And AbelH1893 was a keeperH7462(H8802) of sheepH6629, but CainH7014 was a tillerH5647(H8802) of the groundH127.
3 As time passed, Cain brought an offering to Yahweh from the fruit of the ground.
KJVAnd in processH7093 of timeH3117 it came to pass, that CainH7014 broughtH935(H8686) of the fruitH6529 of the groundH127 an offeringH4503 unto the LORDH3068.
4 Abel also brought some of the firstborn of his flock and of its fat. Yahweh respected Abel and his offering,
KJVAnd AbelH1893, heH1931 also broughtH935(H8689) of the firstlingsH1062 of his flockH6629 and of the fatH2459 thereof. And the LORDH3068 had respectH8159(H8799) unto AbelH1893 and to his offeringH4503:
5 but he didn’t respect Cain and his offering. Cain was very angry, and the expression on his face fell.
KJVBut unto CainH7014 and to his offeringH4503 he had not respectH8159(H8804). And CainH7014 was veryH3966 wrothH2734(H8799), and his countenanceH6440 fellH5307(H8799).
6 Yahweh said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why has the expression of your face fallen?
KJVAnd the LORDH3068 saidH559(H8799) unto CainH7014, Why art thou wrothH2734(H8804)? and why is thy countenanceH6440 fallenH5307(H8804)?
7 If you do well, won’t it be lifted up? If you don’t do well, sin crouches at the door. Its desire is for you, but you are to rule over it.”
KJVIfH518 thou doest wellH3190(H8686), shalt thou not be acceptedH7613? and if thou doest not wellH3190(H8686), sinH2403 liethH7257(H8802) at the doorH6607. And unto thee shall be his desireH8669, and thou shalt ruleH4910(H8799) over him.
8 Cain said to Abel, his brother, “Let’s go into the field.” While they were in the field, Cain rose up against Abel, his brother, and killed him.
KJVAnd CainH7014 talkedH559(H8799) withH413 AbelH1893 his brotherH251: and it came to pass, when they were in the fieldH7704, that CainH7014 rose upH6965(H8799) againstH413 AbelH1893 his brotherH251, and slew himH2026(H8799).
9 Yahweh said to Cain, “Where is Abel, your brother?” He said, “I don’t know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”
KJVAnd the LORDH3068 saidH559(H8799) unto CainH7014, WhereH335 is AbelH1893 thy brotherH251? And he saidH559(H8799), I knowH3045(H8804) not: Am I my brother'sH251 keeperH8104(H8802)?
10 Yahweh said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries to me from the ground.
KJVAnd he saidH559(H8799), WhatH4100 hast thou doneH6213(H8804)? the voiceH6963 of thy brother'sH251 bloodH1818 criethH6817(H8802) unto me from the groundH127.
11 Now you are cursed because of the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.
KJVAnd now art thou cursedH779(H8803) from the earthH127, which hath openedH6475(H8804) her mouthH6310 to receiveH3947(H8800) thy brother'sH251 bloodH1818 from thy handH3027;
12 From now on, when you till the ground, it won’t yield its strength to you. You will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.”
KJVWhenH3588 thou tillestH5647(H8799) the groundH127, it shall not henceforthH3254(H8686) yieldH5414(H8800) unto thee her strengthH3581; a fugitiveH5128(H8801) and a vagabondH5110(H8802) shalt thou be in the earthH776.
13 Cain said to Yahweh, “My punishment is greater than I can bear.
KJVAnd CainH7014 saidH559(H8799) unto the LORDH3068, My punishmentH5771 is greaterH1419 than I can bearH5375(H8800).
14 Behold, you have driven me out today from the surface of the ground. I will be hidden from your face, and I will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth. Whoever finds me will kill me.”
KJVBehold, thou hast driven me outH1644(H8765) this dayH3117 from the faceH6440 of the earthH127; and fromH5921 thy faceH6440 shall I be hidH5641(H8735); and I shall be a fugitiveH5128(H8801) and a vagabondH5110(H8802) in the earthH776; and it shall come to passH1961(H8804), that every one that findeth meH4672(H8802) shall slay meH2026(H8799).
15 Yahweh said to him, “Therefore whoever slays Cain, vengeance will be taken on him sevenfold.” Yahweh appointed a sign for Cain, so that anyone finding him would not strike him.
KJVAnd the LORDH3068 saidH559(H8799) unto him, ThereforeH3651 whosoever slayethH2026(H8802) CainH7014, vengeance shall be takenH5358(H8714) on him sevenfoldH7659. And the LORDH3068 setH7760(H8799) a markH226 upon CainH7014, lestH1115 any findingH4672(H8802) him should killH5221(H8687) him.
16 Cain left Yahweh’s presence, and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
KJVAnd CainH7014 went outH3318(H8799) from the presenceH6440 of the LORDH3068, and dweltH3427(H8799) in the landH776 of NodH5113, on the eastH6926 of EdenH5731.
17 Cain knew his wife. She conceived, and gave birth to Enoch. He built a city, and named the city after the name of his son, Enoch.
KJVAnd CainH7014 knewH3045(H8799) his wifeH802; and she conceivedH2029(H8799), and bareH3205(H8799) EnochH2585: and he buildedH1129(H8802) a cityH5892, and calledH7121(H8799) the nameH8034 of the cityH5892, after the nameH8034 of his sonH1121, EnochH2585.
18 Irad was born to Enoch. Irad became the father of Mehujael. Mehujael became the father of Methushael. Methushael became the father of Lamech.
KJVAnd unto EnochH2585 was bornH3205(H8735) IradH5897: and IradH5897 begatH3205(H8804) MehujaelH4232: and MehujaelH4232 begatH3205(H8804) MethusaelH4967: and MethusaelH4967 begatH3205(H8804) LamechH3929.
19 Lamech took two wives: the name of the first one was Adah, and the name of the second one was Zillah.
KJVAnd LamechH3929 tookH3947(H8799) unto him twoH8147 wivesH802: the nameH8034 of the oneH259 was AdahH5711, and the nameH8034 of the otherH8145 ZillahH6741.
20 Adah gave birth to Jabal, who was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock.
KJVAnd AdahH5711 bareH3205(H8799) JabalH2989: he was the fatherH1 of such as dwellH3427(H8802) in tentsH168, and of such as have cattleH4735.
21 His brother’s name was Jubal, who was the father of all who handle the harp and pipe.
KJVAnd his brother'sH251 nameH8034 was JubalH3106: he was the fatherH1 of all such as handleH8610(H8802) the harpH3658 and organH5748.
22 Zillah also gave birth to Tubal Cain, the forger of every cutting instrument of bronze and iron. Tubal Cain’s sister was Naamah.
KJVAnd ZillahH6741, she also bareH3205(H8804) TubalcainH8423, an instructerH3913(H8803) of every artificerH2794 in brassH5178 and ironH1270: and the sisterH269 of TubalcainH8423 was NaamahH5279.
23 Lamech said to his wives, “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice. You wives of Lamech, listen to my speech, for I have slain a man for wounding me, a young man for bruising me.
KJVAnd LamechH3929 saidH559(H8799) unto his wivesH802, AdahH5711 and ZillahH6741, HearH8085(H8798) my voiceH6963; ye wivesH802 of LamechH3929, hearkenH238(H8685) unto my speechH565: for I have slainH2026(H8804) a manH376 to my woundingH6482, and a young manH3206 to my hurtH2250.
24 If Cain will be avenged seven times, truly Lamech seventy-seven times.”
KJVIfH3588 CainH7014 shall be avengedH5358(H8714) sevenfoldH7659, truly LamechH3929 seventyH7657 and sevenfoldH7651.
25 Adam knew his wife again. She gave birth to a son, and named him Seth, saying, “for God has given me another child instead of Abel, for Cain killed him.”
KJVAnd AdamH120 knewH3045(H8799) his wifeH802 againH5750; and she bareH3205(H8799) a sonH1121, and calledH7121(H8799) his nameH8034 SethH8352: For GodH430, said she, hath appointedH7896(H8804) me anotherH312 seedH2233 insteadH8478 of AbelH1893, whomH3588 CainH7014 slewH2026(H8804).
26 A son was also born to Seth, and he named him Enosh. At that time men began to call on Yahweh’s name.
KJVAnd to SethH8352, to himH1931 also there was bornH3205(H8795) a sonH1121; and he calledH7121(H8799) his nameH8034 EnosH583: then began menH2490(H8717) to callH7121(H8800) upon the nameH8034 of the LORDH3068.
