¹Yahweh sent Nathan to David. He came to him, and said to him, “There were two men in one city: the one rich, and the other poor.

KJVAnd the LORD^H3068 sent^H7971^(H8799) Nathan^H5416 unto David^H1732. And he came^H935^(H8799) unto him, and said^H559^(H8799) unto him, There were two^H8147 men^H582 in one^H259 city^H5892; the one^H259 rich^H6223, and the other^H259 poor^H7326^(H8802).

² The rich man had very many flocks and herds,

KJVThe rich^H6223 man had exceeding^H3966 many^H7235^(H8687) flocks^H6629 and herds^H1241:

³ but the poor man had nothing, except one little ewe lamb, which he had bought and raised. It grew up together with him and with his children. It ate of his own food, drank of his own cup, and lay in his bosom, and was like a daughter to him.

⁴ A traveler came to the rich man, and he didn’t want to take of his own flock and of his own herd to prepare for the wayfaring man who had come to him, but took the poor man’s lamb and prepared it for the man who had come to him.”

⁵ David’s anger burned hot against the man, and he said to Nathan, “As Yahweh lives, the man who has done this deserves to die!

KJVAnd David's^H1732 anger^H639 was greatly^H3966 kindled^H2734^(H8799) against the man^H376; and he said^H559^(H8799) to Nathan^H5416, As the LORD^H3068 liveth^H2416, the man^H376 that hath done^H6213^(H8802) this thing shall surely^H1121 die^H4194:

⁶ He must restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing and because he had no pity!”

⁷ Nathan said to David, “You are the man! This is what Yahweh, the God of Israel, says: ‘I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you out of the hand of Saul.

⁸ I gave you your master’s house and your master’s wives into your bosom, and gave you the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that would have been too little, I would have added to you many more such things.

⁹ Why have you despised Yahweh’s word, to do that which is evil in his sight? You have struck Uriah the Hittite with the sword, have taken his wife to be your wife, and have slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon.

¹⁰ Now therefore the sword will never depart from your house, because you have despised me and have taken Uriah the Hittite’s wife to be your wife.’

KJVNow therefore the sword^H2719 shall never^H5704^H5769 depart^H5493^(H8799) from thine house^H1004; because^H6118 thou hast despised^H959^(H8804) me, and hast taken^H3947^(H8799) the wife^H802 of Uriah^H223 the Hittite^H2850 to be thy wife^H802.

¹¹ “This is what Yahweh says: ‘Behold, I will raise up evil against you out of your own house; and I will take your wives before your eyes and give them to your neighbor, and he will lie with your wives in the sight of this sun.

KJVThus saith^H559^(H8804) the LORD^H3068, Behold, I will raise up^H6965^(H8688) evil^H7451 against thee out of thine own house^H1004, and I will take^H3947^(H8804) thy wives^H802 before thine eyes^H5869, and give^H5414^(H8804) them unto thy neighbour^H7453, and he shall lie^H7901^(H8804) with thy wives^H802 in the sight^H5869 of this sun^H8121.

¹² For you did this secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.’”

¹³ David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against Yahweh.” Nathan said to David, “Yahweh also has put away your sin. You will not die.

KJVAnd David^H1732 said^H559^(H8799) unto Nathan^H5416, I have sinned^H2398^(H8804) against the LORD^H3068. And Nathan^H5416 said^H559^(H8799) unto David^H1732, The LORD^H3068 also hath put away^H5674^(H8689) thy sin^H2403; thou shalt not die^H4191^(H8799).

¹⁴ However, because by this deed you have given great occasion to Yahweh’s enemies to blaspheme, the child also who is born to you will surely die.”

KJVHowbeit^H657, because by this deed^H1697 thou hast given^H5006 great occasion^H5006^(H8763) to the enemies^H341^(H8802) of the LORD^H3068 to blaspheme^H5006^(H8765), the child^H1121 also that is born^H3209 unto thee shall surely^H4191^(H8800) die^H4191^(H8799).

¹⁵ Then Nathan departed to his house. Yahweh struck the child that Uriah’s wife bore to David, and he was very sick.

KJVAnd Nathan^H5416 departed^H3212^(H8799) unto his house^H1004. And the LORD^H3068 struck^H5062^(H8799) the child^H3206 that Uriah's^H223 wife^H802 bare^H3205^(H8804) unto David^H1732, and it was very sick^H605^(H8735).

¹⁶ David therefore begged God for the child; and David fasted, and went in and lay all night on the ground.

¹⁷ The elders of his house arose beside him, to raise him up from the earth; but he would not, and he didn’t eat bread with them.

¹⁸ On the seventh day, the child died. David’s servants were afraid to tell him that the child was dead, for they said, “Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spoke to him and he didn’t listen to our voice. How will he then harm himself if we tell him that the child is dead?”

¹⁹ But when David saw that his servants were whispering together, David perceived that the child was dead; and David said to his servants, “Is the child dead?” They said, “He is dead.”

²⁰ Then David arose from the earth, and washed and anointed himself, and changed his clothing; and he came into Yahweh’s house, and worshiped. Then he came to his own house; and when he requested, they set bread before him and he ate.

²¹ Then his servants said to him, “What is this that you have done? You fasted and wept for the child while he was alive, but when the child was dead, you rose up and ate bread.”

²² He said, “While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept; for I said, ‘Who knows whether Yahweh will not be gracious to me, that the child may live?’

KJVAnd he said^H559^(H8799), While the child^H3206 was yet alive^H2416, I fasted^H6684^(H8804) and wept^H1058^(H8799): for I said^H559^(H8804), Who can tell^H3045^(H8802) whether GOD^H3068 will be gracious^H2603^(H8804)^(H8675)^H2603^(H8762) to me, that the child^H3206 may live^H2416?

²³ But now he is dead. Why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I will go to him, but he will not return to me.”

KJVBut now he is dead^H4191^(H8804), wherefore should I fast^H6684^(H8802)? can^H3201^(H8799) I bring him back again^H7725^(H8687)? I shall go^H1980^(H8802) to him, but he shall not return^H7725^(H8799) to me.

²⁴ David comforted Bathsheba his wife, and went in to her, and lay with her. She bore a son, and he called his name Solomon. Yahweh loved him;

²⁵ and he sent by the hand of Nathan the prophet, and he named him Jedidiah, for Yahweh’s sake.

KJVAnd he sent^H7971^(H8799) by the hand^H3027 of Nathan^H5416 the prophet^H5030; and he called^H7121^(H8799) his name^H8034 Jedidiah^H3041, because of the LORD^H3068.

²⁶ Now Joab fought against Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and took the royal city.

KJVAnd Joab^H3097 fought^H3898^(H8735) against Rabbah^H7237 of the children^H1121 of Ammon^H5983, and took^H3920^(H8799) the royal^H4410 city^H5892.

²⁷ Joab sent messengers to David, and said, “I have fought against Rabbah. Yes, I have taken the city of waters.

²⁸ Now therefore gather the rest of the people together, and encamp against the city and take it; lest I take the city, and it be called by my name.”

³⁰ He took the crown of their king from off his head; and its weight was a talent of gold, and in it were precious stones; and it was set on David’s head. He brought a great quantity of plunder out of the city.

³¹ He brought out the people who were in it, and put them to work under saws, under iron picks, under axes of iron, and made them go to the brick kiln; and he did so to all the cities of the children of Ammon. Then David and all the people returned to Jerusalem.

¹At the return of the year, at the time when kings go out, David sent Joab and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon and besieged Rabbah. But David stayed at Jerusalem.

KJVAnd it came to pass, after the year^H8141 was expired^H8666, at the time^H6256 when kings^H4428^(H8675)^H4397 go forth^H3318^(H8800) to battle, that David^H1732 sent^H7971^(H8799) Joab^H3097, and his servants^H5650 with him, and all Israel^H3478; and they destroyed^H7843^(H8686) the children^H1121 of Ammon^H5983, and besieged^H6696^(H8799) Rabbah^H7237. ² At evening, David arose from his bed and walked on the roof of the king’s house. From the roof, he saw a woman bathing, and the woman was very beautiful to look at.

KJVAnd it came to pass in an eveningtide^H6153^H6256, that David^H1732 arose^H6965^(H8799) from off his bed^H4904, and walked^H1980^(H8691) upon the roof^H1406 of the king's^H4428 house^H1004: and from the roof^H1406 he saw^H7200^(H8799) a woman^H802 washing^H7364^(H8801) herself; and the woman^H802 was very^H3966 beautiful^H2896 to look upon^H4758.

³ David sent and inquired after the woman. One said, “Isn’t this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, Uriah the Hittite’s wife?”

⁴ David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in to him, and he lay with her (for she was purified from her uncleanness); and she returned to her house.

⁵ The woman conceived; and she sent and told David, and said, “I am with child.”

⁶ David sent to Joab, “Send me Uriah the Hittite.” Joab sent Uriah to David.

KJVAnd David^H1732 sent^H7971^(H8799) to Joab^H3097, saying, Send^H7971^(H8798) me Uriah^H223 the Hittite^H2850. And Joab^H3097 sent^H7971^(H8799) Uriah^H223 to David^H1732.

⁷ When Uriah had come to him, David asked him how Joab did, and how the people fared, and how the war prospered.

KJVAnd when Uriah^H223 was come^H935^(H8799) unto him, David^H1732 demanded^H7592^(H8799) of him how Joab^H3097 did^H7965, and how the people^H5971 did^H7965, and how the war^H4421 prospered^H7965.

⁸ David said to Uriah, “Go down to your house and wash your feet.” Uriah departed out of the king’s house, and a gift from the king was sent after him.

⁹ But Uriah slept at the door of the king’s house with all the servants of his lord, and didn’t go down to his house.

¹⁰ When they had told David, saying, “Uriah didn’t go down to his house,” David said to Uriah, “Haven’t you come from a journey? Why didn’t you go down to your house?”

¹¹ Uriah said to David, “The ark, Israel, and Judah, are staying in tents; and my lord Joab and the servants of my lord are encamped in the open field. Shall I then go into my house to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? As you live, and as your soul lives, I will not do this thing!”

¹² David said to Uriah, “Stay here today also, and tomorrow I will let you depart.” So Uriah stayed in Jerusalem that day and the next day.

¹³ When David had called him, he ate and drank before him; and he made him drunk. At evening, he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but didn’t go down to his house.

¹⁴ In the morning, David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it by the hand of Uriah.

KJVAnd it came to pass in the morning^H1242, that David^H1732 wrote^H3789^(H8799) a letter^H5612 to Joab^H3097, and sent^H7971^(H8799) it by the hand^H3027 of Uriah^H223.

¹⁵ He wrote in the letter, saying, “Send Uriah to the forefront of the hottest battle, and retreat from him, that he may be struck and die.”

KJVAnd he wrote^H3789^(H8799) in the letter^H5612, saying^H559^(H8800), Set^H3051^(H8798) ye Uriah^H223 in the forefront^H6440^H4136 of the hottest^H2389 battle^H4421, and retire^H7725^(H8804) ye from him^H310, that he may be smitten^H5221^(H8738), and die^H4191^(H8804).

¹⁶ When Joab kept watch on the city, he assigned Uriah to the place where he knew that valiant men were.

KJVAnd it came to pass, when Joab^H3097 observed^H8104^(H8800) the city^H5892, that he assigned^H5414^(H8799) Uriah^H223 unto a place^H4725 where he knew^H3045^(H8804) that valiant^H2428 men^H582 were.

¹⁷ The men of the city went out and fought with Joab. Some of the people fell, even of David’s servants; and Uriah the Hittite died also.

KJVAnd the men^H582 of the city^H5892 went out^H3318^(H8799), and fought^H3898^(H8735) with Joab^H3097: and there fell^H5307^(H8799) some of the people^H5971 of the servants^H5650 of David^H1732; and Uriah^H223 the Hittite^H2850 died^H4191^(H8799) also.

¹⁸ Then Joab sent and told David all the things concerning the war;

¹⁹ and he commanded the messenger, saying, “When you have finished telling all the things concerning the war to the king,

²⁰ it shall be that, if the king’s wrath arise, and he asks you, ‘Why did you go so near to the city to fight? Didn’t you know that they would shoot from the wall?

KJVAnd if so be that the king's^H4428 wrath^H2534 arise^H5927^(H8799), and he say^H559^(H8804) unto thee, Wherefore approached ye so nigh^H5066^(H8738) unto the city^H5892 when ye did fight^H3898^(H8736)? knew^H3045^(H8804) ye not that they would shoot^H3384^(H8686) from the wall^H2346?

²¹ Who struck Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth? Didn’t a woman cast an upper millstone on him from the wall, so that he died at Thebez? Why did you go so near the wall?’ then you shall say, ‘Your servant Uriah the Hittite is also dead.’”

²² So the messenger went, and came and showed David all that Joab had sent him for.

²³ The messenger said to David, “The men prevailed against us, and came out to us into the field; and we were on them even to the entrance of the gate.
