¹After this, the king of the children of Ammon died, and Hanun his son reigned in his place.

KJVAnd it came to pass after this^H310, that the king^H4428 of the children^H1121 of Ammon^H5983 died^H4191^(H8799), and Hanun^H2586 his son^H1121 reigned^H4427^(H8799) in his stead.

² David said, “I will show kindness to Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father showed kindness to me.” So David sent by his servants to comfort him concerning his father. David’s servants came into the land of the children of Ammon.

KJVThen said^H559^(H8799) David^H1732, I will shew^H6213^(H8799) kindness^H2617 unto Hanun^H2586 the son^H1121 of Nahash^H5176, as his father^H1 shewed^H6213^(H8804) kindness^H2617 unto me. ³ But the princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanun their lord, “Do you think that David honors your father, in that he has sent comforters to you? Hasn’t David sent his servants to you to search the city, to spy it out, and to overthrow it?”

⁴ So Hanun took David’s servants, shaved off one half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away.

⁵ When they told David this, he sent to meet them, for the men were greatly ashamed. The king said, “Wait at Jericho until your beards have grown, and then return.”

⁶ When the children of Ammon saw that they had become odious to David, the children of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Beth Rehob and the Syrians of Zobah, twenty thousand footmen, and the king of Maacah with one thousand men, and the men of Tob twelve thousand men.

⁷ When David heard of it, he sent Joab and all the army of the mighty men.

⁸ The children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array at the entrance of the gate. The Syrians of Zobah and of Rehob and the men of Tob and Maacah were by themselves in the field.

KJVAnd the children^H1121 of Ammon^H5983 came out^H3318^(H8799), and put the battle^H4421 in array^H6186^(H8799) at the entering in^H6607 of the gate^H8179: and the Syrians^H758 of Zoba^H6678, and of Rehob^H7340, and Ishtob^H382, and Maacah^H4601, were by themselves^H905 in the field^H7704.

⁹ Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice men of Israel and put them in array against the Syrians.

KJVWhen Joab^H3097 saw^H7200^(H8799) that the front^H6440 of the battle^H4421 was against him before^H6440 and behind^H268, he chose^H977^(H8799) of all the choice^H977^(H8803) men of Israel^H3478, and put them in array^H6186^(H8799) against^H7125^(H8800) the Syrians^H758:

¹⁰ The rest of the people he committed into the hand of Abishai his brother; and he put them in array against the children of Ammon.

KJVAnd the rest^H3499 of the people^H5971 he delivered^H5414^(H8804) into the hand^H3027 of Abishai^H52 his brother^H251, that he might put them in array^H6186^(H8799) against^H7125^(H8800) the children^H1121 of Ammon^H5983.

¹¹ He said, “If the Syrians are too strong for me, then you shall help me; but if the children of Ammon are too strong for you, then I will come and help you.

KJVAnd he said^H559^(H8799), If the Syrians^H758 be too strong^H2388^(H8799) for me, then thou shalt help^H3444 me: but if the children^H1121 of Ammon^H5983 be too strong^H2388^(H8799) for thee, then I will come^H1980^(H8804) and help^H3467^(H8687) thee.

¹² Be courageous, and let’s be strong for our people and for the cities of our God; and may Yahweh do what seems good to him.”

KJVBe of good courage^H2388^(H8798), and let us play the men^H2388^(H8691) for our people^H5971, and for the cities^H5892 of our God^H430: and the LORD^H3068 do^H6213^(H8799) that which seemeth^H5869 him good^H2896.

¹³ So Joab and the people who were with him came near to the battle against the Syrians, and they fled before him.

KJVAnd Joab^H3097 drew nigh^H5066^(H8799), and the people^H5971 that were with him, unto the battle^H4421 against the Syrians^H758: and they fled^H5127^(H8799) before^H6440 him.

¹⁴ When the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians had fled, they likewise fled before Abishai, and entered into the city. Then Joab returned from the children of Ammon and came to Jerusalem.

KJVAnd when the children^H1121 of Ammon^H5983 saw^H7200^(H8804) that the Syrians^H758 were fled^H5127^(H8804), then fled^H5127^(H8799) they also before^H6440 Abishai^H52, and entered^H935^(H8799) into the city^H5892. So Joab^H3097 returned^H7725^(H8799) from the children^H1121 of Ammon^H5983, and came^H935^(H8799) to Jerusalem^H3389.

¹⁵ When the Syrians saw that they were defeated by Israel, they gathered themselves together.

KJVAnd when the Syrians^H758 saw^H7200^(H8799) that they were smitten^H5062^(H8738) before^H6440 Israel^H3478, they gathered^H622^(H8735) themselves together^H3162.

¹⁶ Hadadezer sent and brought out the Syrians who were beyond the River; and they came to Helam, with Shobach the captain of the army of Hadadezer at their head.

KJVAnd Hadarezer^H1928 sent^H7971^(H8799), and brought out^H3318^(H8686) the Syrians^H758 that were beyond^H5676 the river^H5104: and they came^H935^(H8799) to Helam^H2431; and Shobach^H7731 the captain^H8269 of the host^H6635 of Hadarezer^H1928 went before^H6440 them.

¹⁷ David was told that; and he gathered all Israel together, passed over the Jordan, and came to Helam. The Syrians set themselves in array against David and fought with him.

KJVAnd when it was told^H5046^(H8714) David^H1732, he gathered^H622 all Israel^H3478 together^H622^(H8799), and passed over^H5674^(H8799) Jordan^H3383, and came^H935^(H8799) to Helam^H2431. ¹⁸ The Syrians fled before Israel; and David killed seven hundred charioteers of the Syrians and forty thousand horsemen, and struck Shobach the captain of their army, so that he died there.

¹⁹ When all the kings who were servants to Hadadezer saw that they were defeated before Israel, they made peace with Israel and served them. So the Syrians were afraid to help the children of Ammon any more.

KJVAnd when all the kings^H4428 that were servants^H5650 to Hadarezer^H1928 saw^H7200^(H8799) that they were smitten^H5062^(H8738) before^H6440 Israel^H3478, they made peace^H7999^(H8686) with Israel^H3478, and served^H5647^(H8799) them. So the Syrians^H758 feared^H3372^(H8799) to help^H3467^(H8687) the children^H1121 of Ammon^H5983 any more.

¹David said, “Is there yet any who is left of Saul’s house, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan’s sake?”

² There was of Saul’s house a servant whose name was Ziba, and they called him to David; and the king said to him, “Are you Ziba?” He said, “I am your servant.”

³ The king said, “Is there not yet any of Saul’s house, that I may show the kindness of God to him?” Ziba said to the king, “Jonathan still has a son, who is lame in his feet.”

⁴ The king said to him, “Where is he?” Ziba said to the king, “Behold, he is in the house of Machir the son of Ammiel, in Lo Debar.”

⁵ Then King David sent and brought him out of the house of Machir the son of Ammiel, from Lo Debar.

KJVThen king^H4428 David^H1732 sent^H7971^(H8799), and fetched^H3947^(H8799) him out of the house^H1004 of Machir^H4353, the son^H1121 of Ammiel^H5988, from Lodebar^H3810.

⁶ Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, came to David, fell on his face, and showed respect. David said, “Mephibosheth?” He answered, “Behold, your servant!”

KJVNow when Mephibosheth^H4648, the son^H1121 of Jonathan^H3083, the son^H1121 of Saul^H7586, was come^H935^(H8799) unto David^H1732, he fell^H5307^(H8799) on his face^H6440, and did reverence^H7812^(H8691). ⁷ David said to him, “Don’t be afraid, for I will surely show you kindness for Jonathan your father’s sake, and will restore to you all the land of Saul your father. You will eat bread at my table continually.”

⁸ He bowed down, and said, “What is your servant, that you should look at such a dead dog as I am?”

KJVAnd he bowed^H7812^(H8691) himself, and said^H559^(H8799), What is thy servant^H5650, that thou shouldest look^H6437^(H8804) upon such a dead^H4191^(H8801) dog^H3611 as I am?

⁹ Then the king called to Ziba, Saul’s servant, and said to him, “All that belonged to Saul and to all his house I have given to your master’s son.

KJVThen the king^H4428 called^H7121^(H8799) to Ziba^H6717, Saul's^H7586 servant^H5288, and said^H559^(H8799) unto him, I have given^H5414^(H8804) unto thy master's^H113 son^H1121 all that pertained^H1961^(H8804) to Saul^H7586 and to all his house^H1004.

¹⁰ Till the land for him—you, your sons, and your servants. Bring in the harvest, that your master’s son may have bread to eat; but Mephibosheth your master’s son will always eat bread at my table.” Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.

¹¹ Then Ziba said to the king, “According to all that my lord the king commands his servant, so your servant will do.” So Mephibosheth ate at the king’s table like one of the king’s sons.

KJVThen said^H559^(H8799) Ziba^H6717 unto the king^H4428, According to all that my lord^H113 the king^H4428 hath commanded^H6680^(H8762) his servant^H5650, so shall thy servant^H5650 do^H6213^(H8799). As for Mephibosheth^H4648, said the king, he shall eat^H398^(H8802) at my table^H7979, as one^H259 of the king's^H4428 sons^H1121.

¹² Mephibosheth had a young son, whose name was Mica. All who lived in Ziba’s house were servants to Mephibosheth.

KJVAnd Mephibosheth^H4648 had a young^H6996 son^H1121, whose name^H8034 was Micha^H4316. And all that dwelt^H4186 in the house^H1004 of Ziba^H6717 were servants^H5650 unto Mephibosheth^H4648.

¹³ So Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem, for he ate continually at the king’s table. He was lame in both his feet.

KJVSo Mephibosheth^H4648 dwelt^H3427^(H8802) in Jerusalem^H3389: for he did eat^H398^(H8802) continually^H8548 at the king's^H4428 table^H7979; and was lame^H6455 on both^H8147 his feet^H7272.
