1 Kings 13

WEB·1 Kings 13
1Behold, a man of God came out of Judah by Yahweh’s word to Bethel; and Jeroboam was standing by the altar to burn incense.
KJVAnd, behold, there cameH935(H8804) a manH376 of GodH430 out of JudahH3063 by the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068 unto BethelH1008: and JeroboamH3379 stoodH5975(H8802) by the altarH4196 to burn incenseH6999(H8687).
2 He cried against the altar by Yahweh’s word, and said, “Altar! Altar! Yahweh says: ‘Behold, a son will be born to David’s house, Josiah by name. On you he will sacrifice the priests of the high places who burn incense on you, and they will burn men’s bones on you.’”
KJVAnd he criedH7121(H8799) against the altarH4196 in the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068, and saidH559(H8799), O altarH4196, altarH4196, thus saithH559(H8804) the LORDH3068; Behold, a childH1121 shall be bornH3205(H8737) unto the houseH1004 of DavidH1732, JosiahH2977 by nameH8034; and upon thee shall he offerH2076(H8804) the priestsH3548 of the high placesH1116 that burn incenseH6999(H8688) upon thee, and men'sH120 bonesH6106 shall be burntH8313(H8799) upon thee.
3 He gave a sign the same day, saying, “This is the sign which Yahweh has spoken: Behold, the altar will be split apart, and the ashes that are on it will be poured out.”
KJVAnd he gaveH5414(H8804) a signH4159 the same dayH3117, sayingH559(H8800), This is the signH4159 which the LORDH3068 hath spokenH1696(H8765); Behold, the altarH4196 shall be rentH7167(H8738), and the ashesH1880 that are upon it shall be poured outH8210(H8738).
4 When the king heard the saying of the man of God, which he cried against the altar in Bethel, Jeroboam put out his hand from the altar, saying, “Seize him!” His hand, which he put out against him, dried up, so that he could not draw it back again to himself.
KJVAnd it came to pass, when kingH4428 JeroboamH3379 heardH8085(H8800) the sayingH1697 of the manH376 of GodH430, which had criedH7121(H8804) against the altarH4196 in BethelH1008, that he put forthH7971(H8799) his handH3027 from the altarH4196, sayingH559(H8800), Lay holdH8610(H8798) on him. And his handH3027, which he put forthH7971(H8804) against him, dried upH3001(H8799), so that he couldH3201(H8804) not pull it in againH7725(H8687) to him.
5 The altar was also split apart, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of God had given by Yahweh’s word.
KJVThe altarH4196 also was rentH7167(H8738), and the ashesH1880 poured outH8210(H8735) from the altarH4196, according to the signH4159 which the manH376 of GodH430 had givenH5414(H8804) by the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068.
6 The king answered the man of God, “Now intercede for the favor of Yahweh your God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored to me.” The man of God interceded with Yahweh, and the king’s hand was restored to him, and became as it was before.
KJVAnd the kingH4428 answeredH6030(H8799) and saidH559(H8799) unto the manH376 of GodH430, IntreatH2470(H8761) now the faceH6440 of the LORDH3068 thy GodH430, and prayH6419(H8690) for me, that my handH3027 may be restored me againH7725(H8799). And the manH376 of GodH430 besoughtH2470(H8762)H6440 the LORDH3068, and the king'sH4428 handH3027 was restored him againH7725(H8799), and became as it was beforeH7223.
7 The king said to the man of God, “Come home with me and refresh yourself, and I will give you a reward.”
KJVAnd the kingH4428 saidH1696(H8762) unto the manH376 of GodH430, ComeH935(H8798) homeH1004 with me, and refreshH5582(H8798) thyself, and I will giveH5414(H8799) thee a rewardH4991.
8 The man of God said to the king, “Even if you gave me half of your house, I would not go in with you, neither would I eat bread nor drink water in this place;
KJVAnd the manH376 of GodH430 saidH559(H8799) unto the kingH4428, If thou wilt giveH5414(H8799) me halfH2677 thine houseH1004, I will not go inH935(H8799) with thee, neither will I eatH398(H8799) breadH3899 nor drinkH8354(H8799) waterH4325 in this placeH4725:
9 for so was it commanded me by Yahweh’s word, saying, ‘You shall eat no bread, drink no water, and don’t return by the way that you came.’”
KJVFor so was it chargedH6680(H8765) me by the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068, sayingH559(H8800), EatH398(H8799) no breadH3899, nor drinkH8354(H8799) waterH4325, nor turn againH7725(H8799) by the same wayH1870 that thou camestH1980(H8804).
10 So he went another way, and didn’t return by the way that he came to Bethel.
KJVSo he wentH3212(H8799) anotherH312 wayH1870, and returnedH7725(H8804) not by the wayH1870 that he cameH935(H8804) to BethelH1008.
11 Now an old prophet lived in Bethel, and one of his sons came and told him all the works that the man of God had done that day in Bethel. They also told their father the words which he had spoken to the king.
KJVNow there dweltH3427(H8802) anH259 oldH2205 prophetH5030 in BethelH1008; and his sonsH1121 cameH935(H8799) and toldH5608(H8762) him all the worksH4639 that the manH376 of GodH430 had doneH6213(H8804) that dayH3117 in BethelH1008: the wordsH1697 which he had spokenH1696(H8765) unto the kingH4428, them they toldH5608(H8762) also to their fatherH1.
12 Their father said to them, “Which way did he go?” Now his sons had seen which way the man of God went, who came from Judah.
KJVAnd their fatherH1 saidH1696(H8762) unto them, What wayH1870 wentH1980(H8804) he? For his sonsH1121 had seenH7200(H8799) whatH335 wayH1870 the manH376 of GodH430 wentH1980(H8804), which cameH935(H8804) from JudahH3063.
13 He said to his sons, “Saddle the donkey for me.” So they saddled the donkey for him; and he rode on it.
KJVAnd he saidH559(H8799) unto his sonsH1121, SaddleH2280(H8798) me the assH2543. So they saddledH2280(H8799) him the assH2543: and he rodeH7392(H8799) thereon,
14 He went after the man of God, and found him sitting under an oak. He said to him, “Are you the man of God who came from Judah?” He said, “I am.”
KJVAnd wentH3212(H8799) afterH310 the manH376 of GodH430, and foundH4672(H8799) him sittingH3427(H8802) under an oakH424: and he saidH559(H8799) unto him, Art thou the manH376 of GodH430 that camestH935(H8804) from JudahH3063? And he saidH559(H8799), I am.
15 Then he said to him, “Come home with me and eat bread.”
KJVThen he saidH559(H8799) unto him, ComeH3212(H8798) homeH1004 with me, and eatH398(H8798) breadH3899.
16 He said, “I may not return with you, nor go in with you. I will not eat bread or drink water with you in this place.
KJVAnd he saidH559(H8799), I mayH3201(H8799) not returnH7725(H8800) with thee, nor go inH935(H8800) with thee: neither will I eatH398(H8799) breadH3899 nor drinkH8354(H8799) waterH4325 with thee in this placeH4725:
17 For it was said to me by Yahweh’s word, ‘You shall eat no bread or drink water there, and don’t turn again to go by the way that you came.’”
KJVFor it was saidH1697 to me by the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068, Thou shalt eatH398(H8799) no breadH3899 nor drinkH8354(H8799) waterH4325 there, nor turn againH7725(H8799) to goH3212(H8800) by the wayH1870 that thou camestH1980(H8804).
18 He said to him, “I also am a prophet as you are; and an angel spoke to me by Yahweh’s word, saying, ‘Bring him back with you into your house, that he may eat bread and drink water.’” He lied to him.
KJVHe saidH559(H8799) unto him, I am a prophetH5030 also as thou art; and an angelH4397 spakeH1696(H8765) unto me by the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068, sayingH559(H8800), Bring him backH7725(H8685) with thee into thine houseH1004, that he may eatH398(H8799) breadH3899 and drinkH8354(H8799) waterH4325. But he liedH3584(H8765) unto him.
19 So he went back with him, ate bread in his house, and drank water.
KJVSo he went backH7725(H8799) with him, and did eatH398(H8799) breadH3899 in his houseH1004, and drankH8354(H8799) waterH4325.
20 As they sat at the table, Yahweh’s word came to the prophet who brought him back;
KJVAnd it came to pass, as they satH3427(H8802) at the tableH7979, that the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068 came unto the prophetH5030 that brought him backH7725(H8689):
21 and he cried out to the man of God who came from Judah, saying, “Yahweh says, ‘Because you have been disobedient to Yahweh’s word, and have not kept the commandment which Yahweh your God commanded you,
KJVAnd he criedH7121(H8799) unto the manH376 of GodH430 that cameH935(H8804) from JudahH3063, sayingH559(H8800), Thus saithH559(H8804) the LORDH3068, Forasmuch asH3282 thou hast disobeyedH4784(H8804) the mouthH6310 of the LORDH3068, and hast not keptH8104(H8804) the commandmentH4687 which the LORDH3068 thy GodH430 commandedH6680(H8765) thee,
22 but came back, and have eaten bread and drank water in the place of which he said to you, “Eat no bread, and drink no water,” your body will not come to the tomb of your fathers.’”
KJVBut camest backH7725(H8799), and hast eatenH398(H8799) breadH3899 and drunkH8354(H8799) waterH4325 in the placeH4725, of the which the LORD did sayH1696(H8765) to thee, EatH398(H8799) no breadH3899, and drinkH8354(H8799) no waterH4325; thy carcaseH5038 shall not comeH935(H8799) unto the sepulchreH6913 of thy fathersH1.
23 After he had eaten bread and after he drank, he saddled the donkey for the prophet whom he had brought back.
KJVAnd it came to pass, afterH310 he had eatenH398(H8800) breadH3899, and afterH310 he had drunkH8354(H8800), that he saddledH2280(H8799) for him the assH2543, to wit, for the prophetH5030 whom he had brought backH7725(H8689).
24 When he had gone, a lion met him by the way and killed him. His body was thrown on the path, and the donkey stood by it. The lion also stood by the body.
KJVAnd when he was goneH3212(H8799), a lionH738 metH4672(H8799) him by the wayH1870, and slewH4191(H8686) him: and his carcaseH5038 was castH7993(H8716) in the wayH1870, and the assH2543 stoodH5975(H8802) byH681 it, the lionH738 also stoodH5975(H8802) by the carcaseH5038.
25 Behold, men passed by and saw the body thrown on the path, and the lion standing by the body; and they came and told it in the city where the old prophet lived.
KJVAnd, behold, menH582 passed byH5674(H8802), and sawH7200(H8799) the carcaseH5038 castH7993(H8716) in the wayH1870, and the lionH738 standingH5975(H8802) byH681 the carcaseH5038: and they cameH935(H8799) and toldH1696(H8762) it in the cityH5892 where the oldH2205 prophetH5030 dweltH3427(H8802).
26 When the prophet who brought him back from the way heard of it, he said, “It is the man of God who was disobedient to Yahweh’s word. Therefore Yahweh has delivered him to the lion, which has mauled him and slain him, according to Yahweh’s word which he spoke to him.”
KJVAnd when the prophetH5030 that brought him backH7725(H8689) from the wayH1870 heardH8085(H8799) thereof, he saidH559(H8799), It is the manH376 of GodH430, who was disobedientH4784(H8804) unto the wordH6310 of the LORDH3068: therefore the LORDH3068 hath deliveredH5414(H8799) him unto the lionH738, which hath tornH7665(H8799) him, and slainH4191(H8686) him, according to the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068, which he spakeH1696(H8765) unto him.
27 He said to his sons, saying, “Saddle the donkey for me,” and they saddled it.
KJVAnd he spakeH1696(H8762) to his sonsH1121, sayingH559(H8800), SaddleH2280(H8798) me the assH2543. And they saddledH2280(H8799) him.
28 He went and found his body thrown on the path, and the donkey and the lion standing by the body. The lion had not eaten the body nor mauled the donkey.
KJVAnd he wentH3212(H8799) and foundH4672(H8799) his carcaseH5038 castH7993(H8716) in the wayH1870, and the assH2543 and the lionH738 standingH5975(H8802) byH681 the carcaseH5038: the lionH738 had not eatenH398(H8804) the carcaseH5038, nor tornH7665(H8804) the assH2543.
29 The prophet took up the body of the man of God, and laid it on the donkey, and brought it back. He came to the city of the old prophet to mourn, and to bury him.
KJVAnd the prophetH5030 took upH5375(H8799) the carcaseH5038 of the manH376 of GodH430, and laidH3240(H8686) it upon the assH2543, and brought it backH7725(H8686): and the oldH2205 prophetH5030 cameH935(H8799) to the cityH5892, to mournH5594(H8800) and to buryH6912(H8800) him.
30 He laid his body in his own grave; and they mourned over him, saying, “Alas, my brother!”
KJVAnd he laidH3240(H8686) his carcaseH5038 in his own graveH6913; and they mournedH5594(H8799) over him, saying, AlasH1945, my brotherH251!
31 After he had buried him, he spoke to his sons, saying, “When I am dead, bury me in the tomb in which the man of God is buried. Lay my bones beside his bones.
KJVAnd it came to pass, afterH310 he had buriedH6912(H8800) him, that he spakeH559(H8799) to his sonsH1121, sayingH559(H8800), When I am deadH4191(H8800), then buryH6912(H8804) me in the sepulchreH6913 wherein the manH376 of GodH430 is buriedH6912(H8803); layH3240(H8685) my bonesH6106 besideH681 his bonesH6106:
32 For the saying which he cried by Yahweh’s word against the altar in Bethel, and against all the houses of the high places which are in the cities of Samaria, will surely happen.”
KJVFor the sayingH1697 which he criedH7121(H8804) by the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068 against the altarH4196 in BethelH1008, and against all the housesH1004 of the high placesH1116 which are in the citiesH5892 of SamariaH8111, shall surely come to pass.
33 After this thing, Jeroboam didn’t turn from his evil way, but again made priests of the high places from among all the people. Whoever wanted to, he consecrated him, that there might be priests of the high places.
KJVAfterH310 this thingH1697 JeroboamH3379 returnedH7725(H8804) not from his evilH7451 wayH1870, but madeH6213(H8799) againH7725(H8799) of the lowestH7098 of the peopleH5971 priestsH3548 of the high placesH1116: whosoever wouldH2655, he consecratedH4390(H8762)H3027 him, and he became one of the priestsH3548 of the high placesH1116.
34 This thing became sin to the house of Jeroboam, even to cut it off and to destroy it from off the surface of the earth.
KJVAnd this thingH1697 became sinH2403 unto the houseH1004 of JeroboamH3379, even to cut it offH3582(H8687), and to destroyH8045(H8687) it from off the faceH6440 of the earthH127.
