¹At that time Abijah the son of Jeroboam became sick.

KJVAt that time^H6256 Abijah^H29 the son^H1121 of Jeroboam^H3379 fell sick^H2470^(H8804).

² Jeroboam said to his wife, “Please get up and disguise yourself, so that you won’t be recognized as Jeroboam’s wife. Go to Shiloh. Behold, Ahijah the prophet is there, who said that I would be king over this people.

KJVAnd Jeroboam^H3379 said^H559^(H8799) to his wife^H802, Arise^H6965^(H8798), I pray thee, and disguise^H8138^(H8690) thyself, that thou be not known^H3045^(H8799) to be the wife^H802 of Jeroboam^H3379; and get^H1980^(H8804) thee to Shiloh^H7887: behold, there is Ahijah^H281 the prophet^H5030, which told^H1696^(H8765) me that I should be king^H4428 over this people^H5971.

³ Take with you ten loaves of bread, some cakes, and a jar of honey, and go to him. He will tell you what will become of the child.”

KJVAnd take^H3947^(H8804) with thee^H3027 ten^H6235 loaves^H3899, and cracknels^H5350, and a cruse^H1228 of honey^H1706, and go^H935^(H8804) to him: he shall tell^H5046^(H8686) thee what shall become of the child^H5288.

⁴ Jeroboam’s wife did so, and arose and went to Shiloh, and came to Ahijah’s house. Now Ahijah could not see, for his eyes were set by reason of his age.

⁵ Yahweh said to Ahijah, “Behold, Jeroboam’s wife is coming to inquire of you concerning her son, for he is sick. Tell her such and such; for it will be, when she comes in, that she will pretend to be another woman.”

⁶ So when Ahijah heard the sound of her feet as she came in at the door, he said, “Come in, Jeroboam’s wife! Why do you pretend to be another? For I am sent to you with heavy news.

KJVAnd it was so, when Ahijah^H281 heard^H8085^(H8800) the sound^H6963 of her feet^H7272, as she came in^H935^(H8802) at the door^H6607, that he said^H559^(H8799), Come in^H935^(H8798), thou wife^H802 of Jeroboam^H3379; why feignest thou thyself to be another^H5234^(H8693)? for I am sent^H7971^(H8803) to thee with heavy^H7186 tidings.

⁷ Go, tell Jeroboam, ‘Yahweh, the God of Israel, says: “Because I exalted you from among the people, and made you prince over my people Israel,

⁸ and tore the kingdom away from David’s house, and gave it to you; and yet you have not been as my servant David, who kept my commandments, and who followed me with all his heart, to do that only which was right in my eyes,

⁹ but have done evil above all who were before you, and have gone and made for yourself other gods, molten images, to provoke me to anger, and have cast me behind your back,

¹⁰ therefore, behold, I will bring evil on the house of Jeroboam, and will cut off from Jeroboam everyone who urinates on a wall, he who is shut up and he who is left at large in Israel, and will utterly sweep away the house of Jeroboam, as a man sweeps away dung until it is all gone.

KJVTherefore, behold, I will bring^H935^(H8688) evil^H7451 upon the house^H1004 of Jeroboam^H3379, and will cut off^H3772^(H8689) from Jeroboam^H3379 him that pisseth^H8366^(H8688) against the wall^H7023, and him that is shut up^H6113^(H8803) and left^H5800^(H8803) in Israel^H3478, and will take away^H1197^(H8765) the remnant^H310 of the house^H1004 of Jeroboam^H3379, as a man taketh away^H1197^(H8762) dung^H1557, till it be all gone^H8552^(H8800).

¹¹ The dogs will eat whoever belongs to Jeroboam who dies in the city; and the birds of the sky will eat whoever dies in the field, for Yahweh has spoken it.”’

KJVHim that dieth^H4191^(H8801) of Jeroboam^H3379 in the city^H5892 shall the dogs^H3611 eat^H398^(H8799); and him that dieth^H4191^(H8801) in the field^H7704 shall the fowls^H5775 of the air^H8064 eat^H398^(H8799): for the LORD^H3068 hath spoken^H1696^(H8765) it.

¹² Arise therefore, and go to your house. When your feet enter into the city, the child will die.

KJVArise^H6965^(H8798) thou therefore, get^H3212^(H8798) thee to thine own house^H1004: and when thy feet^H7272 enter^H935^(H8800) into the city^H5892, the child^H3206 shall die^H4191^(H8804).

¹³ All Israel will mourn for him and bury him; for he only of Jeroboam will come to the grave, because in him there is found some good thing toward Yahweh, the God of Israel, in the house of Jeroboam.

KJVAnd all Israel^H3478 shall mourn^H5594^(H8804) for him, and bury^H6912^(H8804) him: for he only of Jeroboam^H3379 shall come^H935^(H8799) to the grave^H6913, because in him there is found^H4672^(H8738) some good^H2896 thing^H1697 toward the LORD^H3068 God^H430 of Israel^H3478 in the house^H1004 of Jeroboam^H3379.

¹⁴ Moreover Yahweh will raise up a king for himself over Israel who will cut off the house of Jeroboam. This is the day! What? Even now.

KJVMoreover the LORD^H3068 shall raise him up^H6965^(H8689) a king^H4428 over Israel^H3478, who shall cut off^H3772^(H8686) the house^H1004 of Jeroboam^H3379 that day^H3117: but what? even now.

¹⁵ For Yahweh will strike Israel, as a reed is shaken in the water; and he will root up Israel out of this good land which he gave to their fathers, and will scatter them beyond the River, because they have made their Asherah poles, provoking Yahweh to anger.

KJVFor the LORD^H3068 shall smite^H5221^(H8689) Israel^H3478, as a reed^H7070 is shaken^H5110^(H8799) in the water^H4325, and he shall root up^H5428^(H8804) Israel^H3478 out of this good^H2896 land^H127, which he gave^H5414^(H8804) to their fathers^H1, and shall scatter^H2219^(H8765) them beyond^H5676 the river^H5104, because they have made^H6213^(H8804) their groves^H842, provoking the LORD^H3068 to anger^H3707^(H8688).

¹⁶ He will give Israel up because of the sins of Jeroboam, which he has sinned, and with which he has made Israel to sin.”

¹⁷ Jeroboam’s wife arose and departed, and came to Tirzah. As she came to the threshold of the house, the child died.

¹⁸ All Israel buried him and mourned for him, according to Yahweh’s word, which he spoke by his servant Ahijah the prophet.

¹⁹ The rest of the acts of Jeroboam, how he fought and how he reigned, behold, they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel.

KJVAnd the rest^H3499 of the acts^H1697 of Jeroboam^H3379, how he warred^H3898^(H8738), and how he reigned^H4427^(H8804), behold, they are written^H3789^(H8803) in the book^H5612 of the chronicles^H1697^H3117 of the kings^H4428 of Israel^H3478.

²⁰ The days which Jeroboam reigned were twenty two years; then he slept with his fathers, and Nadab his son reigned in his place.

²¹ Rehoboam the son of Solomon reigned in Judah. Rehoboam was forty-one years old when he began to reign, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city which Yahweh had chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, to put his name there. His mother’s name was Naamah the Ammonitess.

KJVAnd Rehoboam^H7346 the son^H1121 of Solomon^H8010 reigned^H4427^(H8804) in Judah^H3063. Rehoboam^H7346 was forty^H705 and one^H259 years^H8141 old^H1121 when he began to reign^H4427^(H8800), and he reigned^H4427^(H8804) seventeen^H7651^H6240 years^H8141 in Jerusalem^H3389, the city^H5892 which the LORD^H3068 did choose^H977^(H8804) out of all the tribes^H7626 of Israel^H3478, to put^H7760^(H8800) his name^H8034 there. And his mother's^H517 name^H8034 was Naamah^H5279 an Ammonitess^H5985.

²² Judah did that which was evil in Yahweh’s sight, and they provoked him to jealousy with their sins which they committed, above all that their fathers had done.

KJVAnd Judah^H3063 did^H6213^(H8799) evil^H7451 in the sight^H5869 of the LORD^H3068, and they provoked him to jealousy^H7065^(H8762) with their sins^H2403 which they had committed^H2398^(H8804), above all that their fathers^H1 had done^H6213^(H8804).

²³ For they also built for themselves high places, sacred pillars, and Asherah poles on every high hill and under every green tree.

²⁴ There were also sodomites in the land. They did according to all the abominations of the nations which Yahweh drove out before the children of Israel.

KJVAnd there were also sodomites^H6945 in the land^H776: and they did^H6213^(H8804) according to all the abominations^H8441 of the nations^H1471 which the LORD^H3068 cast out^H3423^(H8689) before^H6440 the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478.

²⁵ In the fifth year of King Rehoboam, Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem;

KJVAnd it came to pass in the fifth^H2549 year^H8141 of king^H4428 Rehoboam^H7346, that Shishak^H7895 king^H4428 of Egypt^H4714 came up^H5927^(H8804) against Jerusalem^H3389:

²⁶ and he took away the treasures of Yahweh’s house and the treasures of the king’s house. He even took away all of it, including all the gold shields which Solomon had made.

KJVAnd he took away^H3947^(H8799) the treasures^H214 of the house^H1004 of the LORD^H3068, and the treasures^H214 of the king's^H4428 house^H1004; he even took away^H3947^(H8804) all: and he took away^H3947^(H8799) all the shields^H4043 of gold^H2091 which Solomon^H8010 had made^H6213^(H8804).

²⁷ King Rehoboam made shields of bronze in their place, and committed them to the hands of the captains of the guard, who guarded the door of the king’s house.

²⁸ It was so, that as often as the king went into Yahweh’s house, the guard bore them, and brought them back into the guard room.

KJVAnd it was so, when^H1767 the king^H4428 went^H935^(H8800) into the house^H1004 of the LORD^H3068, that the guard^H7323^(H8801) bare^H5375^(H8799) them, and brought them back^H7725^(H8689) into the guard^H7323^(H8801) chamber^H8372.

²⁹ Now the rest of the acts of Rehoboam, and all that he did, aren’t they written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?

KJVNow the rest^H3499 of the acts^H1697 of Rehoboam^H7346, and all that he did^H6213^(H8804), are they not written^H3789^(H8803) in the book^H5612 of the chronicles^H1697^H3117 of the kings^H4428 of Judah^H3063?

³⁰ There was war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam continually.

KJVAnd there was war^H4421 between Rehoboam^H7346 and Jeroboam^H3379 all their days^H3117.

³¹ Rehoboam slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in David’s city. His mother’s name was Naamah the Ammonitess. Abijam his son reigned in his place.

¹Behold, a man of God came out of Judah by Yahweh’s word to Bethel; and Jeroboam was standing by the altar to burn incense.

KJVAnd, behold, there came^H935^(H8804) a man^H376 of God^H430 out of Judah^H3063 by the word^H1697 of the LORD^H3068 unto Bethel^H1008: and Jeroboam^H3379 stood^H5975^(H8802) by the altar^H4196 to burn incense^H6999^(H8687).

² He cried against the altar by Yahweh’s word, and said, “Altar! Altar! Yahweh says: ‘Behold, a son will be born to David’s house, Josiah by name. On you he will sacrifice the priests of the high places who burn incense on you, and they will burn men’s bones on you.’”

³ He gave a sign the same day, saying, “This is the sign which Yahweh has spoken: Behold, the altar will be split apart, and the ashes that are on it will be poured out.”

⁴ When the king heard the saying of the man of God, which he cried against the altar in Bethel, Jeroboam put out his hand from the altar, saying, “Seize him!” His hand, which he put out against him, dried up, so that he could not draw it back again to himself.

KJVAnd it came to pass, when king^H4428 Jeroboam^H3379 heard^H8085^(H8800) the saying^H1697 of the man^H376 of God^H430, which had cried^H7121^(H8804) against the altar^H4196 in Bethel^H1008, that he put forth^H7971^(H8799) his hand^H3027 from the altar^H4196, saying^H559^(H8800), Lay hold^H8610^(H8798) on him. And his hand^H3027, which he put forth^H7971^(H8804) against him, dried up^H3001^(H8799), so that he could^H3201^(H8804) not pull it in again^H7725^(H8687) to him.

⁵ The altar was also split apart, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of God had given by Yahweh’s word.

KJVThe altar^H4196 also was rent^H7167^(H8738), and the ashes^H1880 poured out^H8210^(H8735) from the altar^H4196, according to the sign^H4159 which the man^H376 of God^H430 had given^H5414^(H8804) by the word^H1697 of the LORD^H3068.

⁶ The king answered the man of God, “Now intercede for the favor of Yahweh your God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored to me.” The man of God interceded with Yahweh, and the king’s hand was restored to him, and became as it was before.

KJVAnd the king^H4428 answered^H6030^(H8799) and said^H559^(H8799) unto the man^H376 of God^H430, Intreat^H2470^(H8761) now the face^H6440 of the LORD^H3068 thy God^H430, and pray^H6419^(H8690) for me, that my hand^H3027 may be restored me again^H7725^(H8799). And the man^H376 of God^H430 besought^H2470^(H8762)^H6440 the LORD^H3068, and the king's^H4428 hand^H3027 was restored him again^H7725^(H8799), and became as it was before^H7223.

⁷ The king said to the man of God, “Come home with me and refresh yourself, and I will give you a reward.”

KJVAnd the king^H4428 said^H1696^(H8762) unto the man^H376 of God^H430, Come^H935^(H8798) home^H1004 with me, and refresh^H5582^(H8798) thyself, and I will give^H5414^(H8799) thee a reward^H4991.

⁸ The man of God said to the king, “Even if you gave me half of your house, I would not go in with you, neither would I eat bread nor drink water in this place;

KJVAnd the man^H376 of God^H430 said^H559^(H8799) unto the king^H4428, If thou wilt give^H5414^(H8799) me half^H2677 thine house^H1004, I will not go in^H935^(H8799) with thee, neither will I eat^H398^(H8799) bread^H3899 nor drink^H8354^(H8799) water^H4325 in this place^H4725:

⁹ for so was it commanded me by Yahweh’s word, saying, ‘You shall eat no bread, drink no water, and don’t return by the way that you came.’”

KJVFor so was it charged^H6680^(H8765) me by the word^H1697 of the LORD^H3068, saying^H559^(H8800), Eat^H398^(H8799) no bread^H3899, nor drink^H8354^(H8799) water^H4325, nor turn again^H7725^(H8799) by the same way^H1870 that thou camest^H1980^(H8804).

¹⁰ So he went another way, and didn’t return by the way that he came to Bethel.

KJVSo he went^H3212^(H8799) another^H312 way^H1870, and returned^H7725^(H8804) not by the way^H1870 that he came^H935^(H8804) to Bethel^H1008.

¹¹ Now an old prophet lived in Bethel, and one of his sons came and told him all the works that the man of God had done that day in Bethel. They also told their father the words which he had spoken to the king.

KJVNow there dwelt^H3427^(H8802) an^H259 old^H2205 prophet^H5030 in Bethel^H1008; and his sons^H1121 came^H935^(H8799) and told^H5608^(H8762) him all the works^H4639 that the man^H376 of God^H430 had done^H6213^(H8804) that day^H3117 in Bethel^H1008: the words^H1697 which he had spoken^H1696^(H8765) unto the king^H4428, them they told^H5608^(H8762) also to their father^H1.

¹² Their father said to them, “Which way did he go?” Now his sons had seen which way the man of God went, who came from Judah.

KJVAnd their father^H1 said^H1696^(H8762) unto them, What way^H1870 went^H1980^(H8804) he? For his sons^H1121 had seen^H7200^(H8799) what^H335 way^H1870 the man^H376 of God^H430 went^H1980^(H8804), which came^H935^(H8804) from Judah^H3063.

¹³ He said to his sons, “Saddle the donkey for me.” So they saddled the donkey for him; and he rode on it.

KJVAnd he said^H559^(H8799) unto his sons^H1121, Saddle^H2280^(H8798) me the ass^H2543. So they saddled^H2280^(H8799) him the ass^H2543: and he rode^H7392^(H8799) thereon,

¹⁴ He went after the man of God, and found him sitting under an oak. He said to him, “Are you the man of God who came from Judah?” He said, “I am.”

KJVAnd went^H3212^(H8799) after^H310 the man^H376 of God^H430, and found^H4672^(H8799) him sitting^H3427^(H8802) under an oak^H424: and he said^H559^(H8799) unto him, Art thou the man^H376 of God^H430 that camest^H935^(H8804) from Judah^H3063? And he said^H559^(H8799), I am.

¹⁵ Then he said to him, “Come home with me and eat bread.”

¹⁶ He said, “I may not return with you, nor go in with you. I will not eat bread or drink water with you in this place.

KJVAnd he said^H559^(H8799), I may^H3201^(H8799) not return^H7725^(H8800) with thee, nor go in^H935^(H8800) with thee: neither will I eat^H398^(H8799) bread^H3899 nor drink^H8354^(H8799) water^H4325 with thee in this place^H4725:

¹⁷ For it was said to me by Yahweh’s word, ‘You shall eat no bread or drink water there, and don’t turn again to go by the way that you came.’”

¹⁸ He said to him, “I also am a prophet as you are; and an angel spoke to me by Yahweh’s word, saying, ‘Bring him back with you into your house, that he may eat bread and drink water.’” He lied to him.

¹⁹ So he went back with him, ate bread in his house, and drank water.

²⁰ As they sat at the table, Yahweh’s word came to the prophet who brought him back;

KJVAnd it came to pass, as they sat^H3427^(H8802) at the table^H7979, that the word^H1697 of the LORD^H3068 came unto the prophet^H5030 that brought him back^H7725^(H8689):

²¹ and he cried out to the man of God who came from Judah, saying, “Yahweh says, ‘Because you have been disobedient to Yahweh’s word, and have not kept the commandment which Yahweh your God commanded you,

KJVAnd he cried^H7121^(H8799) unto the man^H376 of God^H430 that came^H935^(H8804) from Judah^H3063, saying^H559^(H8800), Thus saith^H559^(H8804) the LORD^H3068, Forasmuch as^H3282 thou hast disobeyed^H4784^(H8804) the mouth^H6310 of the LORD^H3068, and hast not kept^H8104^(H8804) the commandment^H4687 which the LORD^H3068 thy God^H430 commanded^H6680^(H8765) thee,

²² but came back, and have eaten bread and drank water in the place of which he said to you, “Eat no bread, and drink no water,” your body will not come to the tomb of your fathers.’”

²³ After he had eaten bread and after he drank, he saddled the donkey for the prophet whom he had brought back.

²⁹ The prophet took up the body of the man of God, and laid it on the donkey, and brought it back. He came to the city of the old prophet to mourn, and to bury him.

³³ After this thing, Jeroboam didn’t turn from his evil way, but again made priests of the high places from among all the people. Whoever wanted to, he consecrated him, that there might be priests of the high places.
