¹Now Jehoram the son of Ahab began to reign over Israel in Samaria in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and reigned twelve years.

² He did that which was evil in Yahweh’s sight, but not like his father and like his mother, for he put away the pillar of Baal that his father had made.

KJVAnd he wrought^H6213^(H8799) evil^H7451 in the sight^H5869 of the LORD^H3068; but not like his father^H1, and like his mother^H517: for he put away^H5493^(H8686) the image^H4676 of Baal^H1168 that his father^H1 had made^H6213^(H8804).

³ Nevertheless he held to the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, with which he made Israel to sin. He didn’t depart from them.

KJVNevertheless he cleaved^H1692^(H8804) unto the sins^H2403 of Jeroboam^H3379 the son^H1121 of Nebat^H5028, which made Israel^H3478 to sin^H2398^(H8689); he departed^H5493^(H8804) not therefrom.

⁴ Now Mesha king of Moab was a sheep breeder; and he supplied the king of Israel with one hundred thousand lambs and the wool of one hundred thousand rams.

⁵ But when Ahab was dead, the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel.

⁶ King Jehoram went out of Samaria at that time, and mustered all Israel.

⁷ He went and sent to Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, saying, “The king of Moab has rebelled against me. Will you go with me against Moab to battle?” He said, “I will go up. I am as you are, my people as your people, my horses as your horses.”

⁸ Then he said, “Which way shall we go up?” Jehoram answered, “The way of the wilderness of Edom.”

KJVAnd he said^H559^(H8799), Which way^H1870 shall we go up^H5927^(H8799)? And he answered^H559^(H8799), The way^H1870 through the wilderness^H4057 of Edom^H123.

⁹ So the king of Israel went with the king of Judah and the king of Edom, and they marched for seven days along a circuitous route. There was no water for the army or for the animals that followed them.

¹⁰ The king of Israel said, “Alas! For Yahweh has called these three kings together to deliver them into the hand of Moab.”

KJVAnd the king^H4428 of Israel^H3478 said^H559^(H8799), Alas^H162! that the LORD^H3068 hath called^H7121 these three^H7969 kings^H4428 together^H7121^(H8804), to deliver^H5414^(H8800) them into the hand^H3027 of Moab^H4124!

¹¹ But Jehoshaphat said, “Isn’t there a prophet of Yahweh here, that we may inquire of Yahweh by him?” One of the king of Israel’s servants answered, “Elisha the son of Shaphat, who poured water on the hands of Elijah, is here.”

KJVBut Jehoshaphat^H3092 said^H559^(H8799), Is there not here a prophet^H5030 of the LORD^H3068, that we may enquire^H1875^(H8799) of the LORD^H3068 by him? ¹² Jehoshaphat said, “Yahweh’s word is with him.” So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.

KJVAnd Jehoshaphat^H3092 said^H559^(H8799), The word^H1697 of the LORD^H3068 is^H3426 with him. So the king^H4428 of Israel^H3478 and Jehoshaphat^H3092 and the king^H4428 of Edom^H123 went down^H3381^(H8799) to him.

¹³ Elisha said to the king of Israel, “What have I to do with you? Go to the prophets of your father, and to the prophets of your mother.” The king of Israel said to him, “No, for Yahweh has called these three kings together to deliver them into the hand of Moab.”

¹⁴ Elisha said, “As Yahweh of Armies lives, before whom I stand, surely, were it not that I respect the presence of Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would not look toward you, nor see you.

KJVAnd Elisha^H477 said^H559^(H8799), As the LORD^H3068 of hosts^H6635 liveth^H2416, before^H6440 whom I stand^H5975^(H8804), surely, were it not that^H3884 I regard^H5375^(H8802) the presence^H6440 of Jehoshaphat^H3092 the king^H4428 of Judah^H3063, I would not look^H5027^(H8686) toward thee, nor see^H7200^(H8799) thee.

¹⁵ But now bring me a musician.” When the musician played, Yahweh’s hand came on him.

KJVBut now bring^H3947^(H8798) me a minstrel^H5059^(H8764). And it came to pass, when the minstrel^H5059^(H8764) played^H5059^(H8763), that the hand^H3027 of the LORD^H3068 came upon him.

¹⁶ He said, “Yahweh says, ‘Make this valley full of trenches.’

KJVAnd he said^H559^(H8799), Thus saith^H559^(H8804) the LORD^H3068, Make^H6213^(H8800) this valley^H5158 full of ditches^H1356.

¹⁷ For Yahweh says, ‘You will not see wind, neither will you see rain, yet that valley will be filled with water, and you will drink, both you and your livestock and your other animals.

KJVFor thus saith^H559^(H8804) the LORD^H3068, Ye shall not see^H7200^(H8799) wind^H7307, neither shall ye see^H7200^(H8799) rain^H1653; yet that valley^H5158 shall be filled^H4390^(H8735) with water^H4325, that ye may drink^H8354^(H8804), both ye, and your cattle^H4735, and your beasts^H929.

¹⁸ This is an easy thing in Yahweh’s sight. He will also deliver the Moabites into your hand.

KJVAnd this is but a light thing^H7043^(H8738) in the sight^H5869 of the LORD^H3068: he will deliver^H5414^(H8804) the Moabites^H4124 also into your hand^H3027.

¹⁹ You shall strike every fortified city and every choice city, and shall fell every good tree, and stop all springs of water, and mar every good piece of land with stones.’”

²⁰ In the morning, about the time of offering the sacrifice, behold, water came by the way of Edom, and the country was filled with water.

²¹ Now when all the Moabites heard that the kings had come up to fight against them, they gathered themselves together, all who were able to put on armor, young and old, and stood on the border.

²² They rose up early in the morning, and the sun shone on the water, and the Moabites saw the water opposite them as red as blood.

²³ They said, “This is blood. The kings are surely destroyed, and they have struck each other. Now therefore, Moab, to the plunder!”

KJVAnd they said^H559^(H8799), This is blood^H1818: the kings^H4428 are surely^H2717^(H8715) slain^H2717^(H8738), and they have smitten^H5221^(H8686) one^H376 another^H7453: now therefore, Moab^H4124, to the spoil^H7998.

²⁴ When they came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and struck the Moabites, so that they fled before them; and they went forward into the land attacking the Moabites.

KJVAnd when they came^H935^(H8799) to the camp^H4264 of Israel^H3478, the Israelites^H3478 rose up^H6965^(H8799) and smote^H5221^(H8686) the Moabites^H4124, so that they fled^H5127^(H8799) before^H6440 them: but they went forward^H5221^(H8686) smiting^H5221^(H8687) the Moabites^H4124, even in their country.

²⁵ They beat down the cities; and on every good piece of land each man cast his stone, and filled it. They also stopped all the springs of water and cut down all the good trees, until in Kir Hareseth all they left was its stones; however the men armed with slings went around it and attacked it.

²⁶ When the king of Moab saw that the battle was too severe for him, he took with him seven hundred men who drew a sword, to break through to the king of Edom; but they could not.

KJVAnd when the king^H4428 of Moab^H4124 saw^H7200^(H8799) that the battle^H4421 was too sore^H2388^(H8804) for him, he took^H3947^(H8799) with him seven^H7651 hundred^H3967 men^H376 that drew^H8025^(H8802) swords^H2719, to break through^H1234^(H8687) even unto the king^H4428 of Edom^H123: but they could^H3201^(H8804) not.

²⁷ Then he took his oldest son who would have reigned in his place, and offered him for a burnt offering on the wall. There was great wrath against Israel; and they departed from him, and returned to their own land.

¹When Yahweh was about to take Elijah up by a whirlwind into heaven, Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal.

KJVAnd it came to pass, when the LORD^H3068 would take up^H5927^(H8687) Elijah^H452 into heaven^H8064 by a whirlwind^H5591, that Elijah^H452 went^H3212^(H8799) with Elisha^H477 from Gilgal^H1537.

² Elijah said to Elisha, “Please wait here, for Yahweh has sent me as far as Bethel.” Elisha said, “As Yahweh lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you.” So they went down to Bethel.

KJVAnd Elijah^H452 said^H559^(H8799) unto Elisha^H477, Tarry^H3427^(H8798) here, I pray thee; for the LORD^H3068 hath sent^H7971^(H8804) me to Bethel^H1008. And Elisha^H477 said^H559^(H8799) unto him, As the LORD^H3068 liveth^H2416, and as thy soul^H5315 liveth^H2416, I will not leave^H5800^(H8799) thee. So they went down^H3381^(H8799) to Bethel^H1008.

³ The sons of the prophets who were at Bethel came out to Elisha, and said to him, “Do you know that Yahweh will take away your master from over you today?” He said, “Yes, I know it. Hold your peace.”

⁴ Elijah said to him, “Elisha, please wait here, for Yahweh has sent me to Jericho.” He said, “As Yahweh lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you.” So they came to Jericho.

⁵ The sons of the prophets who were at Jericho came near to Elisha, and said to him, “Do you know that Yahweh will take away your master from over you today?” He answered, “Yes, I know it. Hold your peace.”

⁶ Elijah said to him, “Please wait here, for Yahweh has sent me to the Jordan.” He said, “As Yahweh lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you.” Then they both went on.

⁷ Fifty men of the sons of the prophets went and stood opposite them at a distance; and they both stood by the Jordan.

⁸ Elijah took his mantle, and rolled it up, and struck the waters; and they were divided here and there, so that they both went over on dry ground.

⁹ When they had gone over, Elijah said to Elisha, “Ask what I shall do for you, before I am taken from you.” Elisha said, “Please let a double portion of your spirit be on me.”

¹⁰ He said, “You have asked a hard thing. If you see me when I am taken from you, it will be so for you; but if not, it will not be so.”

KJVAnd he said^H559^(H8799), Thou hast asked^H7592^(H8800) a hard thing^H7185^(H8689): nevertheless, if thou see^H7200^(H8799) me when I am taken^H3947^(H8795) from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so.

¹¹ As they continued on and talked, behold, a chariot of fire and horses of fire separated them; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.

KJVAnd it came to pass, as they still^H1980^(H8800) went on^H1980^(H8802), and talked^H1696^(H8763), that, behold, there appeared a chariot^H7393 of fire^H784, and horses^H5483 of fire^H784, and parted^H6504^(H8686) them both^H8147 asunder^H996; and Elijah^H452 went up^H5927^(H8799) by a whirlwind^H5591 into heaven^H8064.

¹² Elisha saw it, and he cried, “My father, my father, the chariots of Israel and its horsemen!” He saw him no more. Then he took hold of his own clothes and tore them in two pieces.

¹³ He also took up Elijah’s mantle that fell from him, and went back and stood by the bank of the Jordan.

¹⁴ He took Elijah’s mantle that fell from him, and struck the waters, and said, “Where is Yahweh, the God of Elijah?” When he also had struck the waters, they were divided apart, and Elisha went over.

¹⁵ When the sons of the prophets who were at Jericho facing him saw him, they said, “The spirit of Elijah rests on Elisha.” They came to meet him, and bowed themselves to the ground before him.

KJVAnd when the sons^H1121 of the prophets^H5030 which were to view at Jericho^H3405 saw^H7200^(H8799) him, they said^H559^(H8799), The spirit^H7307 of Elijah^H452 doth rest^H5117^(H8804) on Elisha^H477. ¹⁶ They said to him, “See now, there are with your servants fifty strong men. Please let them go and seek your master. Perhaps Yahweh’s Spirit has taken him up, and put him on some mountain or into some valley.” He said, “Don’t send them.”

¹⁷ When they urged him until he was ashamed, he said, “Send them.” Therefore they sent fifty men; and they searched for three days, but didn’t find him.

¹⁸ They came back to him while he stayed at Jericho; and he said to them, “Didn’t I tell you, ‘Don’t go’?”

KJVAnd when they came again^H7725^(H8799) to him,(for he tarried^H3427^(H8802) at Jericho^H3405,) he said^H559^(H8799) unto them, Did I not say^H559^(H8804) unto you, Go^H3212^(H8799) not?

¹⁹ The men of the city said to Elisha, “Behold, please, the situation of this city is pleasant, as my lord sees; but the water is bad, and the land is barren.”

KJVAnd the men^H582 of the city^H5892 said^H559^(H8799) unto Elisha^H477, Behold, I pray thee, the situation^H4186 of this city^H5892 is pleasant^H2896, as my lord^H113 seeth^H7200^(H8802): but the water^H4325 is naught^H7451, and the ground^H776 barren^H7921^(H8764).

²⁰ He said, “Bring me a new jar, and put salt in it.” Then they brought it to him.

KJVAnd he said^H559^(H8799), Bring^H3947^(H8798) me a new^H2319 cruse^H6746, and put^H7760^(H8798) salt^H4417 therein. And they brought^H3947^(H8799) it to him.

²¹ He went out to the spring of the waters, and threw salt into it, and said, “Yahweh says, ‘I have healed these waters. There shall not be from there any more death or barren wasteland.’”

KJVAnd he went forth^H3318^(H8799) unto the spring^H4161 of the waters^H4325, and cast^H7993^(H8686) the salt^H4417 in there, and said^H559^(H8799), Thus saith^H559^(H8804) the LORD^H3068, I have healed^H7495^(H8765) these waters^H4325; there shall not be from thence any more death^H4194 or barren^H7921^(H8764) land.

²² So the waters were healed to this day, according to Elisha’s word which he spoke.

KJVSo the waters^H4325 were healed^H7495^(H8735) unto this day^H3117, according to the saying^H1697 of Elisha^H477 which he spake^H1696^(H8765).

²³ He went up from there to Bethel. As he was going up by the way, some youths came out of the city and mocked him, and said to him, “Go up, you baldy! Go up, you baldy!”

KJVAnd he went up^H5927^(H8799) from thence unto Bethel^H1008: and as he was going up^H5927^(H8802) by the way^H1870, there came forth^H3318^(H8804) little^H6996 children^H5288 out of the city^H5892, and mocked^H7046^(H8691) him, and said^H559^(H8799) unto him, Go up^H5927^(H8798), thou bald head^H7142; go up^H5927^(H8798), thou bald head^H7142.

²⁴ He looked behind him and saw them, and cursed them in Yahweh’s name. Then two female bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of those youths.

KJVAnd he turned^H6437^(H8799) back^H310, and looked^H7200^(H8799) on them, and cursed^H7043^(H8762) them in the name^H8034 of the LORD^H3068. And there came forth^H3318^(H8799) two^H8147 she bears^H1677 out of the wood^H3293, and tare^H1234^(H8762) forty^H705 and two^H8147 children^H3206 of them.

²⁵ He went from there to Mount Carmel, and from there he returned to Samaria.
