1Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned thirty-one years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Jedidah the daughter of Adaiah of Bozkath.
KJVJosiahH2977 was eightH8083 yearsH8141 oldH1121 when he began to reignH4427(H8800), and he reignedH4427(H8804) thirtyH7970 and oneH259 yearsH8141 in JerusalemH3389. And his mother'sH517 nameH8034 was JedidahH3040, the daughterH1323 of AdaiahH5718 of BoscathH1218.
2 He did that which was right in Yahweh’s eyes, and walked in all the ways of David his father, and didn’t turn away to the right hand or to the left.
KJVAnd he didH6213(H8799) that which was rightH3477 in the sightH5869 of the LORDH3068, and walkedH3212(H8799) in all the wayH1870 of DavidH1732 his fatherH1, and turned not asideH5493(H8804) to the right handH3225 or to the leftH8040.
3 In the eighteenth year of King Josiah, the king sent Shaphan, the son of Azaliah the son of Meshullam, the scribe, to Yahweh’s house, saying,
KJVAnd it came to pass in the eighteenthH8083H6240 yearH8141 of kingH4428 JosiahH2977, that the kingH4428 sentH7971(H8804) ShaphanH8227 the sonH1121 of AzaliahH683, the sonH1121 of MeshullamH4918, the scribeH5608(H8802), to the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068, sayingH559(H8800),
4 “Go up to Hilkiah the high priest, that he may count the money which is brought into Yahweh’s house, which the keepers of the threshold have gathered of the people.
KJVGo upH5927(H8798) to HilkiahH2518 the highH1419 priestH3548, that he may sumH8552(H8686) the silverH3701 which is broughtH935(H8716) into the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068, which the keepersH8104(H8802) of the doorH5592 have gatheredH622(H8804) of the peopleH5971:
5 Let them deliver it into the hand of the workers who have the oversight of Yahweh’s house; and let them give it to the workers who are in Yahweh’s house, to repair the damage to the house,
KJVAnd let them deliverH5414(H8799) it into the handH3027 of the doersH6213(H8802) of the workH4399, that have the oversightH6485(H8716) of the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068: and let them giveH5414(H8799) it to the doersH6213(H8802) of the workH4399 which is in the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068, to repairH2388(H8763) the breachesH919 of the houseH1004,
6 to the carpenters, and to the builders, and to the masons, and for buying timber and cut stone to repair the house.
KJVUnto carpentersH2796, and buildersH1129(H8802), and masonsH1443(H8802), and to buyH7069(H8800) timberH6086 and hewnH4274 stoneH68 to repairH2388(H8763) the houseH1004.
7 However, no accounting shall be asked of them for the money delivered into their hand, for they deal faithfully.”
KJVHowbeit there was no reckoning madeH2803(H8735) with them of the moneyH3701 that was deliveredH5414(H8737) into their handH3027, because they dealtH6213(H8802) faithfullyH530.
8 Hilkiah the high priest said to Shaphan the scribe, “I have found the book of the law in Yahweh’s house.” Hilkiah delivered the book to Shaphan, and he read it.
KJVAnd HilkiahH2518 the highH1419 priestH3548 saidH559(H8799) unto ShaphanH8227 the scribeH5608(H8802), I have foundH4672(H8804) the bookH5612 of the lawH8451 in the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068. And HilkiahH2518 gaveH5414(H8799) the bookH5612 to ShaphanH8227, and he readH7121(H8799) it.
9 Shaphan the scribe came to the king, and brought the king word again, and said, “Your servants have emptied out the money that was found in the house, and have delivered it into the hands of the workmen who have the oversight of Yahweh’s house.”
KJVAnd ShaphanH8227 the scribeH5608(H8802) cameH935(H8799) to the kingH4428, and broughtH7725 the kingH4428 wordH1697 againH7725(H8686), and saidH559(H8799), Thy servantsH5650 have gatheredH5413(H8689) the moneyH3701 that was foundH4672(H8737) in the houseH1004, and have deliveredH5414(H8799) it into the handH3027 of them that doH6213(H8802) the workH4399, that have the oversightH6485(H8716) of the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068.
10 Shaphan the scribe told the king, saying, “Hilkiah the priest has delivered a book to me.” Then Shaphan read it before the king.
KJVAnd ShaphanH8227 the scribeH5608(H8802) shewedH5046(H8686) the kingH4428, sayingH559(H8800), HilkiahH2518 the priestH3548 hath deliveredH5414(H8804) me a bookH5612. And ShaphanH8227 readH7121(H8799) it beforeH6440 the kingH4428.
11 When the king had heard the words of the book of the law, he tore his clothes.
KJVAnd it came to pass, when the kingH4428 had heardH8085(H8800) the wordsH1697 of the bookH5612 of the lawH8451, that he rentH7167(H8799) his clothesH899.
12 The king commanded Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam the son of Shaphan, Achbor the son of Micaiah, Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah the king’s servant, saying,
KJVAnd the kingH4428 commandedH6680(H8762) HilkiahH2518 the priestH3548, and AhikamH296 the sonH1121 of ShaphanH8227, and AchborH5907 the sonH1121 of MichaiahH4320, and ShaphanH8227 the scribeH5608(H8802), and AsahiahH6222 a servantH5650 of the king'sH4428, sayingH559(H8800),
13 “Go inquire of Yahweh for me, and for the people, and for all Judah, concerning the words of this book that is found; for great is Yahweh’s wrath that is kindled against us, because our fathers have not listened to the words of this book, to do according to all that which is written concerning us.”
KJVGoH3212(H8798) ye, enquireH1875(H8798) of the LORDH3068 for me, and for the peopleH5971, and for all JudahH3063, concerning the wordsH1697 of this bookH5612 that is foundH4672(H8737): for greatH1419 is the wrathH2534 of the LORDH3068 that is kindledH3341(H8738) against us, because our fathersH1 have not hearkenedH8085(H8804) unto the wordsH1697 of this bookH5612, to doH6213(H8800) according unto all that which is writtenH3789(H8803) concerning us.
14 So Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam, Achbor, Shaphan, and Asaiah went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvah, the son of Harhas, keeper of the wardrobe (now she lived in Jerusalem in the second quarter); and they talked with her.
KJVSo HilkiahH2518 the priestH3548, and AhikamH296, and AchborH5907, and ShaphanH8227, and AsahiahH6222, wentH3212(H8799) unto HuldahH2468 the prophetessH5031, the wifeH802 of ShallumH7967 the sonH1121 of TikvahH8616, the sonH1121 of HarhasH2745, keeperH8104(H8802) of the wardrobeH899;(now she dweltH3427(H8802) in JerusalemH3389 in the collegeH4932;) and they communedH1696(H8762) with her.
15 She said to them, “Yahweh the God of Israel says, ‘Tell the man who sent you to me,
KJVAnd she saidH559(H8799) unto them, Thus saithH559(H8804) the LORDH3068 GodH430 of IsraelH3478, TellH559(H8798) the manH376 that sentH7971(H8804) you to me,
16 “Yahweh says, ‘Behold, I will bring evil on this place and on its inhabitants, even all the words of the book which the king of Judah has read.
KJVThus saithH559(H8804) the LORDH3068, Behold, I will bringH935(H8688) evilH7451 upon this placeH4725, and upon the inhabitantsH3427(H8802) thereof, even all the wordsH1697 of the bookH5612 which the kingH4428 of JudahH3063 hath readH7121(H8804):
17 Because they have forsaken me and have burned incense to other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the work of their hands, therefore my wrath shall be kindled against this place, and it will not be quenched.’”
KJVBecause they have forsakenH5800(H8804) me, and have burned incenseH6999(H8762) unto otherH312 godsH430, that they might provoke me to angerH3707(H8687) with all the worksH4639 of their handsH3027; therefore my wrathH2534 shall be kindledH3341(H8738) against this placeH4725, and shall not be quenchedH3518(H8799).
18 But to the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of Yahweh, tell him, “Yahweh the God of Israel says, ‘Concerning the words which you have heard,
KJVBut to the kingH4428 of JudahH3063 which sentH7971(H8802) you to enquireH1875(H8800) of the LORDH3068, thus shall ye sayH559(H8799) to him, Thus saithH559(H8804) the LORDH3068 GodH430 of IsraelH3478, As touching the wordsH1697 which thou hast heardH8085(H8804);
19 because your heart was tender, and you humbled yourself before Yahweh when you heard what I spoke against this place and against its inhabitants, that they should become a desolation and a curse, and have torn your clothes and wept before me, I also have heard you,’ says Yahweh.
KJVBecause thine heartH3824 was tenderH7401(H8804), and thou hast humbledH3665(H8735) thyself beforeH6440 the LORDH3068, when thou heardestH8085(H8800) what I spakeH1696(H8765) against this placeH4725, and against the inhabitantsH3427(H8802) thereof, that they should become a desolationH8047 and a curseH7045, and hast rentH7167(H8799) thy clothesH899, and weptH1058(H8799) beforeH6440 me; I also have heardH8085(H8804) thee, saithH5002(H8803) the LORDH3068.
20 ‘Therefore behold, I will gather you to your fathers, and you will be gathered to your grave in peace. Your eyes will not see all the evil which I will bring on this place.’”’” So they brought this message back to the king.
KJVBehold therefore, I will gatherH622(H8802) thee unto thy fathersH1, and thou shalt be gatheredH622(H8738) into thy graveH6913 in peaceH7965; and thine eyesH5869 shall not seeH7200(H8799) all the evilH7451 which I will bringH935(H8688) upon this placeH4725. And they broughtH7725 the kingH4428 wordH1697 againH7725(H8686).
