1The sons of the prophets said to Elisha, “See now, the place where we live and meet with you is too small for us.
KJVAnd the sonsH1121 of the prophetsH5030 saidH559(H8799) untoH6440 ElishaH477, Behold now, the placeH4725 where we dwellH3427(H8802) with thee is too straitH6862 for us.
2 Please let us go to the Jordan, and each man take a beam from there, and let’s make us a place there, where we may live.” He answered, “Go!”
KJVLet us goH3212(H8799), we pray thee, unto JordanH3383, and takeH3947(H8799) thence every manH376 aH259 beamH6982, and let us makeH6213(H8799) us a placeH4725 there, where we may dwellH3427(H8800). And he answeredH559(H8799), GoH3212(H8798) ye.
3 One said, “Please be pleased to go with your servants.” He answered, “I will go.”
KJVAnd oneH259 saidH559(H8799), Be contentH2974(H8685), I pray thee, and goH3212(H8798) with thy servantsH5650. And he answeredH559(H8799), I will goH3212(H8799).
4 So he went with them. When they came to the Jordan, they cut down wood.
KJVSo he wentH3212(H8799) with them. And when they cameH935(H8799) to JordanH3383, they cut downH1504(H8799) woodH6086.
5 But as one was cutting down a tree, the ax head fell into the water. Then he cried out and said, “Alas, my master! For it was borrowed.”
KJVBut as oneH259 was fellingH5307(H8688) a beamH6982, the axe headH1270 fellH5307(H8804) into the waterH4325: and he criedH6817(H8799), and saidH559(H8799), AlasH162, masterH113! for it was borrowedH7592(H8803).
6 The man of God asked, “Where did it fall?” He showed him the place. He cut down a stick, threw it in there, and made the iron float.
KJVAnd the manH376 of GodH430 saidH559(H8799), WhereH575 fellH5307(H8804) it? And he shewedH7200(H8686) him the placeH4725. And he cut downH7094(H8799) a stickH6086, and castH7993(H8686) it in thither; and the ironH1270 did swimH6687(H8686).
7 He said, “Take it.” So he put out his hand and took it.
KJVTherefore saidH559(H8799) he, Take it upH7311(H8685) to thee. And he put outH7971(H8799) his handH3027, and tookH3947(H8799) it.
8 Now the king of Syria was at war against Israel; and he took counsel with his servants, saying, “My camp will be in such and such a place.”
KJVThen the kingH4428 of SyriaH758 warredH3898(H8737) against IsraelH3478, and took counselH3289(H8735) with his servantsH5650, sayingH559(H8800), In suchH6423 and suchH492 a placeH4725 shall be my campH8466.
9 The man of God sent to the king of Israel, saying, “Beware that you not pass this place, for the Syrians are coming down there.”
KJVAnd the manH376 of GodH430 sentH7971(H8799) unto the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478, sayingH559(H8800), BewareH8104(H8734) that thou passH5674(H8800) not suchH2088 a placeH4725; for thither the SyriansH758 are come downH5185.
10 The king of Israel sent to the place which the man of God told him and warned him of; and he saved himself there, not once or twice.
KJVAnd the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 sentH7971(H8799) to the placeH4725 which the manH376 of GodH430 toldH559(H8804) him and warnedH2094(H8689) him of, and savedH8104(H8738) himself there, not onceH259 nor twiceH8147.
11 The king of Syria’s heart was very troubled about this. He called his servants, and said to them, “Won’t you show me which of us is for the king of Israel?”
KJVTherefore the heartH3820 of the kingH4428 of SyriaH758 was sore troubledH5590(H8735) for this thingH1697; and he calledH7121(H8799) his servantsH5650, and saidH559(H8799) unto them, Will ye not shewH5046(H8686) me which of us is for the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478?
12 One of his servants said, “No, my lord, O king; but Elisha, the prophet who is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the words that you speak in your bedroom.”
KJVAnd oneH259 of his servantsH5650 saidH559(H8799), None, my lordH113, O kingH4428: but ElishaH477, the prophetH5030 that is in IsraelH3478, tellethH5046(H8686) the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 the wordsH1697 that thou speakestH1696(H8762) in thy bedchamberH2315H4904.
13 He said, “Go and see where he is, that I may send and get him.” He was told, “Behold, he is in Dothan.”
KJVAnd he saidH559(H8799), GoH3212(H8798) and spyH7200(H8798) whereH351 he is, that I may sendH7971(H8799) and fetchH3947(H8799) him. And it was toldH5046(H8714) him, sayingH559(H8800), Behold, he is in DothanH1886.
14 Therefore he sent horses, chariots, and a great army there. They came by night and surrounded the city.
KJVTherefore sentH7971(H8799) he thither horsesH5483, and chariotsH7393, and a greatH3515 hostH2428: and they cameH935(H8799) by nightH3915, and compassedH5362 the cityH5892 aboutH5362(H8686).
15 When the servant of the man of God had risen early and gone out, behold, an army with horses and chariots was around the city. His servant said to him, “Alas, my master! What shall we do?”
KJVAnd when the servantH8334(H8764) of the manH376 of GodH430 was risenH6965(H8800) earlyH7925(H8686), and gone forthH3318(H8799), behold, an hostH2428 compassedH5437(H8802) the cityH5892 both with horsesH5483 and chariotsH7393. And his servantH5288 saidH559(H8799) unto him, AlasH162, my masterH113! how shall we doH6213(H8799)?
16 He answered, “Don’t be afraid, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”
KJVAnd he answeredH559(H8799), FearH3372(H8799) not: for they that be with us are moreH7227 than they that be with them.
17 Elisha prayed, and said, “Yahweh, please open his eyes, that he may see.” Yahweh opened the young man’s eyes, and he saw; and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire around Elisha.
KJVAnd ElishaH477 prayedH6419(H8691), and saidH559(H8799), LORDH3068, I pray thee, openH6491(H8798) his eyesH5869, that he may seeH7200(H8799). And the LORDH3068 openedH6491(H8799) the eyesH5869 of the young manH5288; and he sawH7200(H8799): and, behold, the mountainH2022 was fullH4390(H8804) of horsesH5483 and chariotsH7393 of fireH784 round aboutH5439 ElishaH477.
18 When they came down to him, Elisha prayed to Yahweh, and said, “Please strike this people with blindness.” He struck them with blindness according to Elisha’s word.
KJVAnd when they came downH3381(H8799) to him, ElishaH477 prayedH6419(H8691) unto the LORDH3068, and saidH559(H8799), SmiteH5221(H8685) this peopleH1471, I pray thee, with blindnessH5575. And he smoteH5221(H8686) them with blindnessH5575 according to the wordH1697 of ElishaH477.
19 Elisha said to them, “This is not the way, neither is this the city. Follow me, and I will bring you to the man whom you seek.” He led them to Samaria.
KJVAnd ElishaH477 saidH559(H8799) unto them, This is not the wayH1870, neither is thisH2090 the cityH5892: followH3212(H8798)H310 me, and I will bringH3212(H8686) you to the manH376 whom ye seekH1245(H8762). But he ledH3212(H8686) them to SamariaH8111.
20 When they had come into Samaria, Elisha said, “Yahweh, open these men’s eyes, that they may see.” Yahweh opened their eyes, and they saw; and behold, they were in the middle of Samaria.
KJVAnd it came to pass, when they were comeH935(H8800) into SamariaH8111, that ElishaH477 saidH559(H8799), LORDH3068, openH6491(H8798) the eyesH5869 of these men, that they may seeH7200(H8799). And the LORDH3068 openedH6491(H8799) their eyesH5869, and they sawH7200(H8799); and, behold, they were in the midstH8432 of SamariaH8111.
21 The king of Israel said to Elisha, when he saw them, “My father, shall I strike them? Shall I strike them?”
KJVAnd the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 saidH559(H8799) unto ElishaH477, when he sawH7200(H8800) them, My fatherH1, shall I smiteH5221(H8686) them? shall I smiteH5221(H8686) them?
22 He answered, “You shall not strike them. Would you strike those whom you have taken captive with your sword and with your bow? Set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink, then go to their master.”
KJVAnd he answeredH559(H8799), Thou shalt not smiteH5221(H8686) them: wouldest thou smiteH5221(H8688) those whom thou hast taken captiveH7617(H8804) with thy swordH2719 and with thy bowH7198? setH7760(H8798) breadH3899 and waterH4325 beforeH6440 them, that they may eatH398(H8799) and drinkH8354(H8799), and goH3212(H8799) to their masterH113.
23 He prepared a great feast for them. After they ate and drank, he sent them away and they went to their master. So the bands of Syria stopped raiding the land of Israel.
KJVAnd he preparedH3739(H8799) greatH1419 provisionH3740 for them: and when they had eatenH398(H8799) and drunkH8354(H8799), he sent them awayH7971(H8762), and they wentH3212(H8799) to their masterH113. So the bandsH1416 of SyriaH758 cameH935(H8800) no moreH3254(H8804) into the landH776 of IsraelH3478.
24 After this, Benhadad king of Syria gathered all his army, and went up and besieged Samaria.
KJVAnd it came to pass after thisH310, that BenhadadH1130 kingH4428 of SyriaH758 gatheredH6908(H8799) all his hostH4264, and went upH5927(H8799), and besiegedH6696(H8799) SamariaH8111.
25 There was a great famine in Samaria. Behold, they besieged it until a donkey’s head was sold for eighty pieces of silver, and the fourth part of a kab of dove’s dung for five pieces of silver.
KJVAnd there was a greatH1419 famineH7458 in SamariaH8111: and, behold, they besiegedH6696(H8802) it, until an ass'sH2543 headH7218 was sold for fourscoreH8084 pieces of silverH3701, and the fourth partH7255 of a cabH6894 of dove's dungH1686(H8675)H3123H2755 for fiveH2568 pieces of silverH3701.
26 As the king of Israel was passing by on the wall, a woman cried to him, saying, “Help, my lord, O king!”
KJVAnd as the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 was passing byH5674(H8802) upon the wallH2346, there criedH6817(H8804) a womanH802 unto him, sayingH559(H8800), HelpH3467(H8685), my lordH113, O kingH4428.
27 He said, “If Yahweh doesn’t help you, where could I get help for you? From the threshing floor, or from the wine press?”
KJVAnd he saidH559(H8799), If the LORDH3068 do not helpH3467(H8686) thee, whenceH370 shall I helpH3467(H8686) thee? out of the barnfloorH1637, or out of the winepressH3342?
28 Then the king asked her, “What is your problem?” She answered, “This woman said to me, ‘Give your son, that we may eat him today, and we will eat my son tomorrow.’
KJVAnd the kingH4428 saidH559(H8799) unto her, What aileth thee? And she answeredH559(H8799), This womanH802 saidH559(H8804) unto me, GiveH5414(H8798) thy sonH1121, that we may eatH398(H8799) him to dayH3117, and we will eatH398(H8799) my sonH1121 to morrowH4279.
29 So we boiled my son and ate him; and I said to her on the next day, ‘Give up your son, that we may eat him;’ and she has hidden her son.”
KJVSo we boiledH1310(H8762) my sonH1121, and did eatH398(H8799) him: and I saidH559(H8799) unto her on the nextH312 dayH3117, GiveH5414(H8798) thy sonH1121, that we may eatH398(H8799) him: and she hath hidH2244(H8686) her sonH1121.
30 When the king heard the words of the woman, he tore his clothes. Now he was passing by on the wall, and the people looked, and behold, he had sackcloth underneath on his body.
KJVAnd it came to pass, when the kingH4428 heardH8085(H8800) the wordsH1697 of the womanH802, that he rentH7167(H8799) his clothesH899; and he passed byH5674(H8802) upon the wallH2346, and the peopleH5971 lookedH7200(H8799), and, behold, he had sackclothH8242 withinH1004 upon his fleshH1320.
31 Then he said, “God do so to me, and more also, if the head of Elisha the son of Shaphat stays on him today.”
KJVThen he saidH559(H8799), GodH430 doH6213(H8799) so and moreH3254(H8686) also to me, if the headH7218 of ElishaH477 the sonH1121 of ShaphatH8202 shall standH5975(H8799) on him this dayH3117.
32 But Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. Then the king sent a man from before him; but before the messenger came to him, he said to the elders, “Do you see how this son of a murderer has sent to take away my head? Behold, when the messenger comes, shut the door, and hold the door shut against him. Isn’t the sound of his master’s feet behind him?”
KJVBut ElishaH477 satH3427(H8802) in his houseH1004, and the eldersH2205 satH3427(H8802) with him; and the king sentH7971(H8799) a manH376 from beforeH6440 him: but ere the messengerH4397 cameH935(H8799) to him, he saidH559(H8804) to the eldersH2205, SeeH7200(H8804) ye how this sonH1121 of a murdererH7523(H8764) hath sentH7971(H8804) to take awayH5493(H8687) mine headH7218? lookH7200(H8798), when the messengerH4397 comethH935(H8800), shutH5462(H8798) the doorH1817, and hold him fastH3905(H8804) at the doorH1817: is not the soundH6963 of his master'sH113 feetH7272 behindH310 him?
33 While he was still talking with them, behold, the messenger came down to him. Then he said, “Behold, this evil is from Yahweh. Why should I wait for Yahweh any longer?”
KJVAnd while he yet talkedH1696(H8764) with them, behold, the messengerH4397 came downH3381(H8802) unto him: and he saidH559(H8799), Behold, this evilH7451 is of the LORDH3068; what should I waitH3176(H8686) for the LORDH3068 any longer?
