2 Chronicles 18
WEB·2 Chronicles 18
1Now Jehoshaphat had riches and honor in abundance; and he allied himself with Ahab.
KJVNow JehoshaphatH3092 had richesH6239 and honourH3519 in abundanceH7230, and joined affinityH2859(H8691) with AhabH256.
2 After some years, he went down to Ahab to Samaria. Ahab killed sheep and cattle for him in abundance, and for the people who were with him, and moved him to go up with him to Ramoth Gilead.
KJVAnd afterH7093 certain yearsH8141 he went downH3381(H8799) to AhabH256 to SamariaH8111. And AhabH256 killedH2076(H8799) sheepH6629 and oxenH1241 for him in abundanceH7230, and for the peopleH5971 that he had with him, and persuadedH5496(H8686) him to go upH5927(H8800) with him to RamothgileadH7433H1568.
3 Ahab king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat king of Judah, “Will you go with me to Ramoth Gilead?” He answered him, “I am as you are, and my people as your people. We will be with you in the war.”
KJVAnd AhabH256 kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 saidH559(H8799) unto JehoshaphatH3092 kingH4428 of JudahH3063, Wilt thou goH3212(H8799) with me to RamothgileadH7433H1568? And he answeredH559(H8799) him, I am as thou art, and my peopleH5971 as thy peopleH5971; and we will be with thee in the warH4421.
4 Jehoshaphat said to the king of Israel, “Please inquire first for Yahweh’s word.”
KJVAnd JehoshaphatH3092 saidH559(H8799) unto the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478, EnquireH1875(H8798), I pray thee, at the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068 to dayH3117.
5 Then the king of Israel gathered the prophets together, four hundred men, and said to them, “Shall we go to Ramoth Gilead to battle, or shall I forbear?” They said, “Go up, for God will deliver it into the hand of the king.”
KJVTherefore the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 gathered togetherH6908(H8799) of prophetsH5030 fourH702 hundredH3967 menH376, and saidH559(H8799) unto them, Shall we goH3212(H8799) to RamothgileadH7433H1568 to battleH4421, or shall I forbearH2308(H8799)? And they saidH559(H8799), Go upH5927(H8798); for GodH430 will deliverH5414(H8799) it into the king'sH4428 handH3027.
6 But Jehoshaphat said, “Isn’t there here a prophet of Yahweh besides, that we may inquire of him?”
KJVBut JehoshaphatH3092 saidH559(H8799), Is there not here a prophetH5030 of the LORDH3068 besides, that we might enquireH1875(H8799) of him?
7 The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “There is yet one man by whom we may inquire of Yahweh; but I hate him, for he never prophesies good concerning me, but always evil. He is Micaiah the son of Imla.” Jehoshaphat said, “Don’t let the king say so.”
KJVAnd the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 saidH559(H8799) unto JehoshaphatH3092, There is yet oneH259 manH376, by whom we may enquireH1875(H8800) of the LORDH3068: but I hateH8130(H8804) him; for he never prophesiedH5012(H8693) goodH2896 unto me, but alwaysH3117 evilH7451: the same is MicaiahH4321 the sonH1121 of ImlaH3229. And JehoshaphatH3092 saidH559(H8799), Let not the kingH4428 sayH559(H8799) so.
8 Then the king of Israel called an officer, and said, “Get Micaiah the son of Imla quickly.”
KJVAnd the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 calledH7121(H8799) for oneH259 of his officersH5631, and saidH559(H8799), Fetch quicklyH4116(H8761) MicaiahH4319 the sonH1121 of ImlaH3229.
9 Now the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah each sat on his throne, arrayed in their robes, and they were sitting in an open place at the entrance of the gate of Samaria; and all the prophets were prophesying before them.
KJVAnd the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 and JehoshaphatH3092 kingH4428 of JudahH3063 satH3427(H8802) eitherH376 of them on his throneH3678, clothedH3847(H8794) in their robesH899, and they satH3427(H8802) in a void placeH1637 at the entering inH6607 of the gateH8179 of SamariaH8111; and all the prophetsH5030 prophesiedH5012(H8693) beforeH6440 them.
10 Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah made himself horns of iron and said, “Yahweh says, ‘With these you shall push the Syrians, until they are consumed.’”
KJVAnd ZedekiahH6667 the sonH1121 of ChenaanahH3668 had madeH6213(H8799) him hornsH7161 of ironH1270, and saidH559(H8799), Thus saithH559(H8804) the LORDH3068, With these thou shalt pushH5055(H8762) SyriaH758 until they be consumedH3615(H8763).
11 All the prophets prophesied so, saying, “Go up to Ramoth Gilead, and prosper; for Yahweh will deliver it into the hand of the king.”
KJVAnd all the prophetsH5030 prophesiedH5012(H8737) so, sayingH559(H8800), Go upH5927(H8798) to RamothgileadH7433H1568, and prosperH6743(H8685): for the LORDH3068 shall deliverH5414(H8804) it into the handH3027 of the kingH4428.
12 The messenger who went to call Micaiah spoke to him, saying, “Behold, the words of the prophets declare good to the king with one mouth. Let your word therefore, please be like one of theirs, and speak good.”
KJVAnd the messengerH4397 that wentH1980(H8804) to callH7121(H8800) MicaiahH4321 spakeH1696(H8765) to him, sayingH559(H8800), Behold, the wordsH1697 of the prophetsH5030 declare goodH2896 to the kingH4428 with oneH259 assentH6310; let thy wordH1697 therefore, I pray thee, be like oneH259 of theirs, and speakH1696(H8765) thou goodH2896.
13 Micaiah said, “As Yahweh lives, I will say what my God says.”
KJVAnd MicaiahH4321 saidH559(H8799), As the LORDH3068 livethH2416, even what my GodH430 saithH559(H8799), that will I speakH1696(H8762).
14 When he had come to the king, the king said to him, “Micaiah, shall we go to Ramoth Gilead to battle, or shall I forbear?” He said, “Go up, and prosper. They shall be delivered into your hand.”
KJVAnd when he was comeH935(H8799) to the kingH4428, the kingH4428 saidH559(H8799) unto him, MicaiahH4318, shall we goH3212(H8799) to RamothgileadH7433H1568 to battleH4421, or shall I forbearH2308(H8799)? And he saidH559(H8799), Go ye upH5927(H8798), and prosperH6743(H8685), and they shall be deliveredH5414(H8735) into your handH3027.
15 The king said to him, “How many times shall I adjure you that you speak to me nothing but the truth in Yahweh’s name?”
KJVAnd the kingH4428 saidH559(H8799) to him, How many timesH6471 shall I adjureH7650(H8688) thee that thou sayH1696(H8762) nothing but the truthH571 to me in the nameH8034 of the LORDH3068?
16 He said, “I saw all Israel scattered on the mountains, as sheep that have no shepherd. Yahweh said, ‘These have no master. Let them each return to his house in peace.’”
KJVThen he saidH559(H8799), I did seeH7200(H8804) all IsraelH3478 scatteredH6327(H8737) upon the mountainsH2022, as sheepH6629 that have no shepherdH7462(H8802): and the LORDH3068 saidH559(H8799), These have no masterH113; let them returnH7725(H8799) therefore every manH376 to his houseH1004 in peaceH7965.
17 The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “Didn’t I tell you that he would not prophesy good concerning me, but evil?”
KJVAnd the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 saidH559(H8799) to JehoshaphatH3092, Did I not tellH559(H8804) thee that he would not prophesyH5012(H8691) goodH2896 unto me, but evilH7451?
18 Micaiah said, “Therefore hear Yahweh’s word: I saw Yahweh sitting on his throne, and all the army of heaven standing on his right hand and on his left.
KJVAgain he saidH559(H8799), Therefore hearH8085(H8798) the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068; I sawH7200(H8804) the LORDH3068 sittingH3427(H8802) upon his throneH3678, and all the hostH6635 of heavenH8064 standingH5975(H8802) on his right handH3225 and on his leftH8040.
19 Yahweh said, ‘Who will entice Ahab king of Israel, that he may go up and fall at Ramoth Gilead?’ One spoke saying in this way, and another saying in that way.
KJVAnd the LORDH3068 saidH559(H8799), Who shall enticeH6601(H8762) AhabH256 kingH4428 of IsraelH3478, that he may go upH5927(H8799) and fallH5307(H8799) at RamothgileadH7433H1568? And one spakeH559(H8799) sayingH559(H8802) after this mannerH3602, and another sayingH559(H8802) after that mannerH3602.
20 A spirit came out, stood before Yahweh, and said, ‘I will entice him.’ “Yahweh said to him, ‘How?’
KJVThen there came outH3318(H8799) a spiritH7307, and stoodH5975(H8799) beforeH6440 the LORDH3068, and saidH559(H8799), I will enticeH6601(H8762) him. And the LORDH3068 saidH559(H8799) unto him, Wherewith?
21 “He said, ‘I will go, and will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets.’ “He said, ‘You will entice him, and will prevail also. Go and do so.’
KJVAnd he saidH559(H8799), I will go outH3318(H8799), and be a lyingH8267 spiritH7307 in the mouthH6310 of all his prophetsH5030. And the LORD saidH559(H8799), Thou shalt enticeH6601(H8762) him, and thou shalt also prevailH3201(H8799): go outH3318(H8798), and doH6213(H8798) even so.
22 “Now therefore, behold, Yahweh has put a lying spirit in the mouth of these your prophets; and Yahweh has spoken evil concerning you.”
KJVNow therefore, behold, the LORDH3068 hath putH5414(H8804) a lyingH8267 spiritH7307 in the mouthH6310 of these thy prophetsH5030, and the LORDH3068 hath spokenH1696(H8765) evilH7451 against thee.
23 Then Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah came near, and struck Micaiah on the cheek, and said, “Which way did Yahweh’s Spirit go from me to speak to you?”
KJVThen ZedekiahH6667 the sonH1121 of ChenaanahH3668 came nearH5066(H8799), and smoteH5221(H8686) MicaiahH4321 upon the cheekH3895, and saidH559(H8799), WhichH335 wayH1870 wentH5674(H8804) the SpiritH7307 of the LORDH3068 from me to speakH1696(H8763) unto thee?
24 Micaiah said, “Behold, you shall see on that day, when you go into an inner room to hide yourself.”
KJVAnd MicaiahH4321 saidH559(H8799), Behold, thou shalt seeH7200(H8802) on that dayH3117 when thou shalt goH935(H8799) into an innerH2315 chamberH2315 to hideH2244(H8736) thyself.
25 The king of Israel said, “Take Micaiah, and carry him back to Amon the governor of the city, and to Joash the king’s son;
KJVThen the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 saidH559(H8799), TakeH3947(H8798) ye MicaiahH4321, and carry him backH7725(H8685) to AmonH526 the governorH8269 of the cityH5892, and to JoashH3101 the king'sH4428 sonH1121;
26 and say, ‘The king says, “Put this fellow in the prison, and feed him with bread of affliction and with water of affliction, until I return in peace.”’”
KJVAnd sayH559(H8804), Thus saithH559(H8804) the kingH4428, PutH7760(H8798) this fellow in the prisonH1004H3608, and feedH398(H8685) him with breadH3899 of afflictionH3906 and with waterH4325 of afflictionH3906, until I returnH7725(H8800) in peaceH7965.
27 Micaiah said, “If you return at all in peace, Yahweh has not spoken by me.” He said, “Listen, you people, all of you!”
KJVAnd MicaiahH4321 saidH559(H8799), If thou certainlyH7725(H8800) returnH7725(H8799) in peaceH7965, then hath not the LORDH3068 spokenH1696(H8765) by me. And he saidH559(H8799), HearkenH8085(H8798), all ye peopleH5971.
28 So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah went up to Ramoth Gilead.
KJVSo the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 and JehoshaphatH3092 the kingH4428 of JudahH3063 went upH5927(H8799) to RamothgileadH7433H1568.
29 The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “I will disguise myself, and go into the battle; but you put on your robes.” So the king of Israel disguised himself; and they went into the battle.
KJVAnd the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 saidH559(H8799) unto JehoshaphatH3092, I will disguiseH2664(H8692) myself, and will goH935(H8800) to the battleH4421; but putH3847(H8798) thou on thy robesH899. So the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 disguisedH2664(H8691) himself; and they wentH935(H8799) to the battleH4421.
30 Now the king of Syria had commanded the captains of his chariots, saying, “Don’t fight with small nor great, except only with the king of Israel.”
KJVNow the kingH4428 of SyriaH758 had commandedH6680(H8765) the captainsH8269 of the chariotsH7393 that were with him, sayingH559(H8800), FightH3898(H8735) ye not with smallH6996 or greatH1419, save only with the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478.
31 When the captains of the chariots saw Jehoshaphat, they said, “It is the king of Israel!” Therefore they turned around to fight against him. But Jehoshaphat cried out, and Yahweh helped him; and God moved them to depart from him.
KJVAnd it came to pass, when the captainsH8269 of the chariotsH7393 sawH7200(H8800) JehoshaphatH3092, that they saidH559(H8804), It is the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478. Therefore they compassed aboutH5437(H8799) him to fightH3898(H8736): but JehoshaphatH3092 cried outH2199(H8799), and the LORDH3068 helpedH5826(H8804) him; and GodH430 movedH5496(H8686) them to depart from him.
32 When the captains of the chariots saw that it was not the king of Israel, they turned back from pursuing him.
KJVFor it came to pass, that, when the captainsH8269 of the chariotsH7393 perceivedH7200(H8800) that it was not the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478, they turned back againH7725(H8799) from pursuingH310 him.
33 A certain man drew his bow at random, and struck the king of Israel between the joints of the armor. Therefore he said to the driver of the chariot, “Turn around and carry me out of the battle, for I am severely wounded.”
KJVAnd a certain man drewH4900(H8804) a bowH7198 at a ventureH8537, and smoteH5221(H8686) the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 between the jointsH1694 of the harnessH8302: therefore he saidH559(H8799) to his chariotH7395 manH376, TurnH2015(H8798) thine handH3027, that thou mayest carry me outH3318(H8689) of the hostH4264; for I am woundedH2470(H8717).
34 The battle increased that day. However, the king of Israel propped himself up in his chariot against the Syrians until the evening; and at about sunset, he died.
KJVAnd the battleH4421 increasedH5927(H8799) that dayH3117: howbeit the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 stayed himself upH5975(H8689) in his chariotH4818 againstH5227 the SyriansH758 until the evenH6153: and about the timeH6256 of the sunH8121 going downH935(H8800) he diedH4191(H8799).
