¹Now Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses’ father-in-law, heard of all that God had done for Moses and for Israel his people, how Yahweh had brought Israel out of Egypt.

² Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, received Zipporah, Moses’ wife, after he had sent her away,

KJVThen Jethro^H3503, Moses^H4872' father in law^H2859^(H8802), took^H3947^(H8799) Zipporah^H6855, Moses^H4872' wife^H802, after^H310 he had sent her back^H7964,

³ and her two sons. The name of one son was Gershom, for Moses said, “I have lived as a foreigner in a foreign land”.

KJVAnd her two^H8147 sons^H1121; of which the name^H8034 of the one^H259 was Gershom^H1647; for he said^H559^(H8804), I have been an alien^H1616 in a strange^H5237 land^H776:

⁴ The name of the other was Eliezer, for he said, “My father’s God was my help and delivered me from Pharaoh’s sword.”

KJVAnd the name^H8034 of the other^H259 was Eliezer^H461; for the God^H430 of my father^H1, said he, was mine help^H5828, and delivered^H5337^(H8686) me from the sword^H2719 of Pharaoh^H6547:

⁵ Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, came with Moses’ sons and his wife to Moses into the wilderness where he was encamped, at the Mountain of God.

⁶ He said to Moses, “I, your father-in-law Jethro, have come to you with your wife, and her two sons with her.”

⁷ Moses went out to meet his father-in-law, and bowed and kissed him. They asked each other of their welfare, and they came into the tent.

KJVAnd Moses^H4872 went out^H3318^(H8799) to meet^H7125^(H8800) his father in law^H2859^(H8802), and did obeisance^H7812^(H8691), and kissed^H5401^(H8799) him; and they asked^H7592^(H8799) each^H376 other^H7453 of their welfare^H7965; and they came^H935^(H8799) into the tent^H168.

⁸ Moses told his father-in-law all that Yahweh had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel’s sake, all the hardships that had come on them on the way, and how Yahweh delivered them.

KJVAnd Moses^H4872 told^H5608^(H8762) his father in law^H2859^(H8802) all that the LORD^H3068 had done^H6213^(H8804) unto Pharaoh^H6547 and to the Egyptians^H4714 for Israel's^H3478 sake^H182, and all the travail^H8513 that had come^H4672^(H8804) upon them by the way^H1870, and how the LORD^H3068 delivered^H5337^(H8686) them.

⁹ Jethro rejoiced for all the goodness which Yahweh had done to Israel, in that he had delivered them out of the hand of the Egyptians.

KJVAnd Jethro^H3503 rejoiced^H2302^(H8799) for all the goodness^H2896 which the LORD^H3068 had done^H6213^(H8804) to Israel^H3478, whom he had delivered^H5337^(H8689) out of the hand^H3027 of the Egyptians^H4714.

¹⁰ Jethro said, “Blessed be Yahweh, who has delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh; who has delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians.

¹¹ Now I know that Yahweh is greater than all gods because of the way that they treated people arrogantly.”

KJVNow I know^H3045^(H8804) that the LORD^H3068 is greater^H1419 than all gods^H430: for in the thing^H1697 wherein they dealt proudly^H2102^(H8804) he was above them.

¹² Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, took a burnt offering and sacrifices for God. Aaron came with all the elders of Israel, to eat bread with Moses’ father-in-law before God.

KJVAnd Jethro^H3503, Moses^H4872' father in law^H2859^(H8802), took^H3947^(H8799) a burnt offering^H5930 and sacrifices^H2077 for God^H430: and Aaron^H175 came^H935^(H8799), and all the elders^H2205 of Israel^H3478, to eat^H398^(H8800) bread^H3899 with Moses^H4872' father in law^H2859^(H8802) before^H6440 God^H430.

¹³ On the next day, Moses sat to judge the people, and the people stood around Moses from the morning to the evening.

KJVAnd it came to pass on the morrow^H4283, that Moses^H4872 sat^H3427^(H8799) to judge^H8199^(H8800) the people^H5971: and the people^H5971 stood^H5975^(H8799) by Moses^H4872 from the morning^H1242 unto the evening^H6153.

¹⁴ When Moses’ father-in-law saw all that he did to the people, he said, “What is this thing that you do for the people? Why do you sit alone, and all the people stand around you from morning to evening?”

¹⁵ Moses said to his father-in-law, “Because the people come to me to inquire of God.

KJVAnd Moses^H4872 said^H559^(H8799) unto his father in law^H2859^(H8802), Because the people^H5971 come^H935^(H8799) unto me to enquire^H1875^(H8800) of God^H430:

¹⁶ When they have a matter, they come to me, and I judge between a man and his neighbor, and I make them know the statutes of God, and his laws.”

¹⁷ Moses’ father-in-law said to him, “The thing that you do is not good.

¹⁸ You will surely wear away, both you, and this people that is with you; for the thing is too heavy for you. You are not able to perform it yourself alone.

KJVThou wilt surely^H5034^(H8800) wear away^H5034^(H8799), both thou, and this people^H5971 that is with thee: for this thing^H1697 is too heavy^H3515 for thee; thou art not able^H3201^(H8799) to perform^H6213^(H8800) it thyself alone.

¹⁹ Listen now to my voice. I will give you counsel, and God be with you. You represent the people before God, and bring the causes to God.

KJVHearken^H8085^(H8798) now unto my voice^H6963, I will give thee counsel^H3289^(H8799), and God^H430 shall be^H1961^(H8798) with thee: Be thou for the people^H5971 to God-ward^H4136^H430, that thou mayest bring^H935^(H8689) the causes^H1697 unto God^H430:

²⁰ You shall teach them the statutes and the laws, and shall show them the way in which they must walk, and the work that they must do.

KJVAnd thou shalt teach^H2094^(H8689)^H853 them ordinances^H2706 and laws^H8451, and shalt shew^H3045^(H8689) them the way^H1870 wherein they must walk^H3212^(H8799), and the work^H4639 that they must do^H6213^(H8799).

²¹ Moreover you shall provide out of all the people able men which fear God: men of truth, hating unjust gain; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.

KJVMoreover thou shalt provide^H2372^(H8799) out of all the people^H5971 able^H2428 men^H582, such as fear^H3373 God^H430, men^H582 of truth^H571, hating^H8130^(H8802) covetousness^H1215; and place^H7760^(H8804) such over them, to be rulers^H8269 of thousands^H505, and rulers^H8269 of hundreds^H3967, rulers^H8269 of fifties^H2572, and rulers^H8269 of tens^H6235:

²² Let them judge the people at all times. It shall be that every great matter they shall bring to you, but every small matter they shall judge themselves. So shall it be easier for you, and they shall share the load with you.

KJVAnd let them judge^H8199^(H8804) the people^H5971 at all seasons^H6256: and it shall be, that every great^H1419 matter^H1697 they shall bring^H935^(H8686) unto thee, but every small^H6996 matter^H1697 they shall judge^H8199^(H8799): so shall it be easier^H7043^(H8685) for thyself, and they shall bear^H5375^(H8804) the burden with thee.

²³ If you will do this thing, and God commands you so, then you will be able to endure, and all these people also will go to their place in peace.”

KJVIf thou shalt do^H6213^(H8799) this thing^H1697, and God^H430 command^H6680^(H8765) thee so, then thou shalt be able^H3201^(H8804) to endure^H5975^(H8800), and all this people^H5971 shall also go^H935^(H8799) to their place^H4725 in peace^H7965.

²⁴ So Moses listened to the voice of his father-in-law, and did all that he had said.

²⁵ Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.

²⁶ They judged the people at all times. They brought the hard cases to Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves.

²⁷ Moses let his father-in-law depart, and he went his way into his own land.

¹All the congregation of the children of Israel traveled from the wilderness of Sin, starting according to Yahweh’s commandment, and encamped in Rephidim; but there was no water for the people to drink.

KJVAnd all the congregation^H5712 of the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478 journeyed^H5265^(H8799) from the wilderness^H4057 of Sin^H5512, after their journeys^H4550, according to the commandment^H6310 of the LORD^H3068, and pitched^H2583^(H8799) in Rephidim^H7508: and there was no water^H4325 for the people^H5971 to drink^H8354^(H8800).

² Therefore the people quarreled with Moses, and said, “Give us water to drink.” Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test Yahweh?”

³ The people were thirsty for water there; so the people murmured against Moses, and said, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us, our children, and our livestock with thirst?”

⁴ Moses cried to Yahweh, saying, “What shall I do with these people? They are almost ready to stone me.”

⁵ Yahweh said to Moses, “Walk on before the people, and take the elders of Israel with you, and take the rod in your hand with which you struck the Nile, and go.

⁶ Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock in Horeb. You shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink.” Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.

⁷ He called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because the children of Israel quarreled, and because they tested Yahweh, saying, “Is Yahweh among us, or not?”

KJVAnd he called^H7121^(H8799) the name^H8034 of the place^H4725 Massah^H4532, and Meribah^H4809, because of the chiding^H7379 of the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478, and because they tempted^H5254^(H8763) the LORD^H3068, saying^H559^(H8800), Is^H3426 the LORD^H3068 among^H7130 us, or not?

⁸ Then Amalek came and fought with Israel in Rephidim.

⁹ Moses said to Joshua, “Choose men for us, and go out to fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with God’s rod in my hand.”

KJVAnd Moses^H4872 said^H559^(H8799) unto Joshua^H3091, Choose us out^H977^(H8798) men^H582, and go out^H3318^(H8798), fight^H3898^(H8734) with Amalek^H6002: to morrow^H4279 I will stand^H5324^(H8737) on the top^H7218 of the hill^H1389 with the rod^H4294 of God^H430 in mine hand^H3027.

¹⁰ So Joshua did as Moses had told him, and fought with Amalek; and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.

¹¹ When Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed. When he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.

¹² But Moses’ hands were heavy; so they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side. His hands were steady until sunset.

¹³ Joshua defeated Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

¹⁴ Yahweh said to Moses, “Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: that I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under the sky.”

KJVAnd the LORD^H3068 said^H559^(H8799) unto Moses^H4872, Write^H3789^(H8798) this for a memorial^H2146 in a book^H5612, and rehearse^H7760^(H8798) it in the ears^H241 of Joshua^H3091: for I will utterly^H4229^(H8800) put out^H4229^(H8799) the remembrance^H2143 of Amalek^H6002 from under heaven^H8064.

¹⁵ Moses built an altar, and called its name “Yahweh our Banner”.

KJVAnd Moses^H4872 built^H1129^(H8799) an altar^H4196, and called^H7121^(H8799) the name^H8034 of it Jehovahnissi^H3071:

¹⁶ He said, “Yah has sworn: ‘Yahweh will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.’”

KJVFor he said^H559^(H8799), Because the LORD^H3050 hath sworn^H3027^H3676 that the LORD^H3068 will have war^H4421 with Amalek^H6002 from generation^H1755 to generation^H1755.
