¹Yahweh spoke to Moses, “Depart, go up from here, you and the people that you have brought up out of the land of Egypt, to the land of which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, ‘I will give it to your offspring.’

² I will send an angel before you; and I will drive out the Canaanite, the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite.

³ Go to a land flowing with milk and honey; but I will not go up among you, for you are a stiff-necked people, lest I consume you on the way.”

⁴ When the people heard this evil news, they mourned; and no one put on his jewelry.

⁵ Yahweh had said to Moses, “Tell the children of Israel, ‘You are a stiff-necked people. If I were to go up among you for one moment, I would consume you. Therefore now take off your jewelry from you, that I may know what to do to you.’”

⁶ The children of Israel stripped themselves of their jewelry from Mount Horeb onward.

⁷ Now Moses used to take the tent and pitch it outside the camp, far away from the camp, and he called it “The Tent of Meeting.” Everyone who sought Yahweh went out to the Tent of Meeting, which was outside the camp.

KJVAnd Moses^H4872 took^H3947^(H8799) the tabernacle^H168, and pitched^H5186^(H8804) it without^H2351 the camp^H4264, afar off^H7368^(H8687) from the camp^H4264, and called^H7121^(H8804) it the Tabernacle^H168 of the congregation^H4150. ⁸ When Moses went out to the Tent, all the people rose up, and stood, everyone at their tent door, and watched Moses, until he had gone into the Tent.

⁹ When Moses entered into the Tent, the pillar of cloud descended, stood at the door of the Tent, and Yahweh spoke with Moses.

KJVAnd it came to pass, as Moses^H4872 entered^H935^(H8800) into the tabernacle^H168, the cloudy^H6051 pillar^H5982 descended^H3381^(H8799), and stood^H5975^(H8804) at the door^H6607 of the tabernacle^H168, and the LORD talked^H1696^(H8765) with Moses^H4872.

¹⁰ All the people saw the pillar of cloud stand at the door of the Tent, and all the people rose up and worshiped, everyone at their tent door.

¹¹ Yahweh spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. He turned again into the camp, but his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, didn’t depart from the Tent.

KJVAnd the LORD^H3068 spake^H1696^(H8765) unto Moses^H4872 face^H6440 to face^H6440, as a man^H376 speaketh^H1696^(H8762) unto his friend^H7453. And he turned again^H7725^(H8804) into the camp^H4264: but his servant^H8334^(H8764) Joshua^H3091, the son^H1121 of Nun^H5126, a young man^H5288, departed^H4185^(H8686) not out^H8432 of the tabernacle^H168.

¹² Moses said to Yahweh, “Behold, you tell me, ‘Bring up this people;’ and you haven’t let me know whom you will send with me. Yet you have said, ‘I know you by name, and you have also found favor in my sight.’

¹³ Now therefore, if I have found favor in your sight, please show me your way, now, that I may know you, so that I may find favor in your sight; and consider that this nation is your people.”

¹⁴ He said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”

¹⁵ Moses said to him, “If your presence doesn’t go with me, don’t carry us up from here.

KJVAnd he said^H559^(H8799) unto him, If thy presence^H6440 go^H1980^(H8802) not with me, carry us not up^H5927^(H8686) hence.

¹⁶ For how would people know that I have found favor in your sight, I and your people? Isn’t it that you go with us, so that we are separated, I and your people, from all the people who are on the surface of the earth?”

KJVFor wherein shall it be known^H3045^(H8735) here^H645 that I and thy people^H5971 have found^H4672^(H8804) grace^H2580 in thy sight^H5869? is it not in that thou goest^H3212^(H8800) with us? so shall we be separated^H6395^(H8738), I and thy people^H5971, from all the people^H5971 that are upon the face^H6440 of the earth^H127.

¹⁷ Yahweh said to Moses, “I will do this thing also that you have spoken; for you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by name.”

¹⁸ Moses said, “Please show me your glory.”

¹⁹ He said, “I will make all my goodness pass before you, and will proclaim Yahweh’s name before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.”

²⁰ He said, “You cannot see my face, for man may not see me and live.”

²¹ Yahweh also said, “Behold, there is a place by me, and you shall stand on the rock.

KJVAnd the LORD^H3068 said^H559^(H8799), Behold, there is a place^H4725 by me, and thou shalt stand^H5324^(H8738) upon a rock^H6697:

²² It will happen, while my glory passes by, that I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and will cover you with my hand until I have passed by;

KJVAnd it shall come to pass, while my glory^H3519 passeth by^H5674^(H8800), that I will put^H7760^(H8804) thee in a clift^H5366 of the rock^H6697, and will cover^H5526^(H8804) thee with my hand^H3709 while^H5704 I pass by^H5674^(H8800):

²³ then I will take away my hand, and you will see my back; but my face shall not be seen.”

¹When the people saw that Moses delayed coming down from the mountain, the people gathered themselves together to Aaron, and said to him, “Come, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we don’t know what has become of him.”

² Aaron said to them, “Take off the golden rings, which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them to me.”

KJVAnd Aaron^H175 said^H559^(H8799) unto them, Break off^H6561^(H8761) the golden^H2091 earrings^H5141, which are in the ears^H241 of your wives^H802, of your sons^H1121, and of your daughters^H1323, and bring^H935^(H8685) them unto me.

³ All the people took off the golden rings which were in their ears, and brought them to Aaron.

⁴ He received what they handed him, fashioned it with an engraving tool, and made it a molded calf. Then they said, “These are your gods, Israel, which brought you up out of the land of Egypt.”

⁵ When Aaron saw this, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made a proclamation, and said, “Tomorrow shall be a feast to Yahweh.”

⁶ They rose up early on the next day, and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play.

⁷ Yahweh spoke to Moses, “Go, get down; for your people, whom you brought up out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves!

KJVAnd the LORD^H3068 said^H1696^(H8762) unto Moses^H4872, Go^H3212^(H8798), get thee down^H3381^(H8798); for thy people^H5971, which thou broughtest^H5927^(H8689) out of the land^H776 of Egypt^H4714, have corrupted^H7843^(H8765) themselves:

⁸ They have turned away quickly out of the way which I commanded them. They have made themselves a molded calf, and have worshiped it, and have sacrificed to it, and said, ‘These are your gods, Israel, which brought you up out of the land of Egypt.’”

¹⁰ Now therefore leave me alone, that my wrath may burn hot against them, and that I may consume them; and I will make of you a great nation.”

KJVNow therefore let me alone^H3240^(H8685), that my wrath^H639 may wax hot^H2734^(H8799) against them, and that I may consume^H3615^(H8762) them: and I will make^H6213^(H8799) of thee a great^H1419 nation^H1471.

¹¹ Moses begged Yahweh his God, and said, “Yahweh, why does your wrath burn hot against your people, that you have brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand?

KJVAnd Moses^H4872 besought^H2470^(H8762)^H6440 the LORD^H3068 his God^H430, and said^H559^(H8799), LORD^H3068, why doth thy wrath^H639 wax hot^H2734^(H8799) against thy people^H5971, which thou hast brought forth^H3318^(H8689) out of the land^H776 of Egypt^H4714 with great^H1419 power^H3581, and with a mighty^H2389 hand^H3027?

¹² Why should the Egyptians talk, saying, ‘He brought them out for evil, to kill them in the mountains, and to consume them from the surface of the earth’? Turn from your fierce wrath, and turn away from this evil against your people.

KJVWherefore should the Egyptians^H4714 speak^H559^(H8799), and say^H559^(H8800), For mischief^H7451 did he bring^H3318^(H8689) them out, to slay^H2026^(H8800) them in the mountains^H2022, and to consume^H3615^(H8763) them from the face^H6440 of the earth^H127? ¹³ Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, your servants, to whom you swore by your own self, and said to them, ‘I will multiply your offspring as the stars of the sky, and all this land that I have spoken of I will give to your offspring, and they shall inherit it forever.’”

¹⁴ So Yahweh turned away from the evil which he said he would do to his people.

KJVAnd the LORD^H3068 repented^H5162^(H8735) of the evil^H7451 which he thought^H1696^(H8765) to do^H6213^(H8800) unto his people^H5971.

¹⁵ Moses turned, and went down from the mountain, with the two tablets of the covenant in his hand; tablets that were written on both their sides. They were written on one side and on the other.

KJVAnd Moses^H4872 turned^H6437^(H8799), and went down^H3381^(H8799) from the mount^H2022, and the two^H8147 tables^H3871 of the testimony^H5715 were in his hand^H3027: the tables^H3871 were written^H3789^(H8803) on both^H8147 their sides^H5676; on the one side and on the other were they written^H3789^(H8803).

¹⁶ The tablets were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, engraved on the tablets.

KJVAnd the tables^H3871 were the work^H4639 of God^H430, and the writing^H4385 was the writing^H4385 of God^H430, graven^H2801^(H8803) upon the tables^H3871.

¹⁷ When Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said to Moses, “There is the noise of war in the camp.”

KJVAnd when Joshua^H3091 heard^H8085^(H8799) the noise^H6963 of the people^H5971 as they shouted^H7452, he said^H559^(H8799) unto Moses^H4872, There is a noise^H6963 of war^H4421 in the camp^H4264.

¹⁸ He said, “It isn’t the voice of those who shout for victory. It is not the voice of those who cry for being overcome; but the noise of those who sing that I hear.”

¹⁹ As soon as he came near to the camp, he saw the calf and the dancing. Then Moses’ anger grew hot, and he threw the tablets out of his hands, and broke them beneath the mountain.

²⁰ He took the calf which they had made, and burned it with fire, ground it to powder, and scattered it on the water, and made the children of Israel drink it.

²¹ Moses said to Aaron, “What did these people do to you, that you have brought a great sin on them?”

²² Aaron said, “Don’t let the anger of my lord grow hot. You know the people, that they are set on evil.

KJVAnd Aaron^H175 said^H559^(H8799), Let not the anger^H639 of my lord^H113 wax hot^H2734^(H8799): thou knowest^H3045^(H8804) the people^H5971, that they are set on mischief^H7451.

²³ For they said to me, ‘Make us gods, which shall go before us. As for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we don’t know what has become of him.’

²⁴ I said to them, ‘Whoever has any gold, let them take it off.’ So they gave it to me; and I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf.”

²⁵ When Moses saw that the people were out of control, (for Aaron had let them lose control, causing derision among their enemies),

KJVAnd when Moses^H4872 saw^H7200^(H8799) that the people^H5971 were naked^H6544^(H8803);(for Aaron^H175 had made them naked^H6544^(H8804) unto their shame^H8103 among their enemies^H6965^(H8801):)

²⁶ then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, “Whoever is on Yahweh’s side, come to me!” All the sons of Levi gathered themselves together to him.

KJVThen Moses^H4872 stood^H5975^(H8799) in the gate^H8179 of the camp^H4264, and said^H559^(H8799), Who is on the LORD'S^H3068 side? let him come unto me. And all the sons^H1121 of Levi^H3878 gathered^H622^(H8735) themselves together unto him.

²⁷ He said to them, “Yahweh, the God of Israel, says, ‘Every man put his sword on his thigh, and go back and forth from gate to gate throughout the camp, and every man kill his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbor.’”

KJVAnd he said^H559^(H8799) unto them, Thus saith^H559^(H8804) the LORD^H3068 God^H430 of Israel^H3478, Put^H7760^(H8798) every man^H376 his sword^H2719 by his side^H3409, and go^H5674^(H8798) in and out^H7725^(H8798) from gate^H8179 to gate^H8179 throughout the camp^H4264, and slay^H2026^(H8798) every man^H376 his brother^H251, and every man^H376 his companion^H7453, and every man^H376 his neighbour^H7138.

²⁸ The sons of Levi did according to the word of Moses. About three thousand men fell of the people that day.

KJVAnd the children^H1121 of Levi^H3878 did^H6213^(H8799) according to the word^H1697 of Moses^H4872: and there fell^H5307^(H8799) of the people^H5971 that day^H3117 about three^H7969 thousand^H505 men^H376.

²⁹ Moses said, “Consecrate yourselves today to Yahweh, for every man was against his son and against his brother, that he may give you a blessing today.”

KJVFor Moses^H4872 had said^H559^(H8799), Consecrate yourselves^H4390^(H8798)^H3027 to day^H3117 to the LORD^H3068, even^H3588 every man^H376 upon his son^H1121, and upon his brother^H251; that he may bestow^H5414^(H8800) upon you a blessing^H1293 this day^H3117.

³⁰ On the next day, Moses said to the people, “You have sinned a great sin. Now I will go up to Yahweh. Perhaps I shall make atonement for your sin.”

KJVAnd it came to pass on the morrow^H4283, that Moses^H4872 said^H559^(H8799) unto the people^H5971, Ye have sinned^H2398^(H8804) a great^H1419 sin^H2401: and now I will go up^H5927^(H8799) unto the LORD^H3068; peradventure^H194 I shall make an atonement^H3722^(H8762) for^H1157 your sin^H2403.

³¹ Moses returned to Yahweh, and said, “Oh, this people have sinned a great sin, and have made themselves gods of gold.

KJVAnd Moses^H4872 returned^H7725^(H8799) unto the LORD^H3068, and said^H559^(H8799), Oh^H577, this people^H5971 have sinned^H2398^(H8804) a great^H1419 sin^H2401, and have made^H6213^(H8799) them gods^H430 of gold^H2091.

³² Yet now, if you will, forgive their sin—and if not, please blot me out of your book which you have written.”

KJVYet now, if thou wilt forgive^H5375^(H8799) their sin^H2403--; and if not, blot^H4229^(H8798) me, I pray thee, out of thy book^H5612 which thou hast written^H3789^(H8804).
