WEB·Jeremiah 10
1Hear the word which Yahweh speaks to you, house of Israel!
KJVHearH8085(H8798) ye the wordH1697 which the LORDH3068 speakethH1696(H8765) unto you, O houseH1004 of IsraelH3478:
2 Yahweh says, “Don’t learn the way of the nations, and don’t be dismayed at the signs of the sky; for the nations are dismayed at them.
KJVThus saithH559(H8804) the LORDH3068, LearnH3925(H8799) not the wayH1870 of the heathenH1471, and be not dismayedH2865(H8735) at the signsH226 of heavenH8064; for the heathenH1471 are dismayedH2865(H8735) at themH1992.
3 For the customs of the peoples are vanity; for one cuts a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman with the ax.
KJVFor the customsH2708 of the peopleH5971 are vainH1892: for one cuttethH3772(H8804) a treeH6086 out of the forestH3293, the workH4639 of the handsH3027 of the workmanH2796, with the axeH4621.
4 They deck it with silver and with gold. They fasten it with nails and with hammers, so that it can’t move.
KJVThey deckH3302(H8762) it with silverH3701 and with goldH2091; they fastenH2388(H8762) it with nailsH4548 and with hammersH4717, that it moveH6328(H8686) not.
5 They are like a palm tree, of turned work, and don’t speak. They must be carried, because they can’t move. Don’t be afraid of them; for they can’t do evil, neither is it in them to do good.”
KJVThey are uprightH4749 as the palm treeH8560, but speakH1696(H8762) not: they must needsH5375(H8800) be borneH5375(H8735), because they cannot goH6805(H8799). Be not afraidH3372(H8799) of them; for they cannot do evilH7489(H8686), neither also is it in them to do goodH3190(H8687).
6 There is no one like you, Yahweh. You are great, and your name is great in might.
KJVForasmuch as there is none like unto thee, O LORDH3068; thou art greatH1419, and thy nameH8034 is greatH1419 in mightH1369.
7 Who shouldn’t fear you, King of the nations? For it belongs to you. Because among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their royal estate, there is no one like you.
KJVWho would not fearH3372(H8799) thee, O KingH4428 of nationsH1471? for to thee doth it appertainH2969(H8804): forasmuch as among all the wiseH2450 men of the nationsH1471, and in all their kingdomsH4438, there is none like unto thee.
8 But they are together brutish and foolish, instructed by idols! It is just wood.
KJVBut they are altogetherH259 brutishH1197(H8799) and foolishH3688(H8799): the stockH6086 is a doctrineH4148 of vanitiesH1892.
9 There is silver beaten into plates, which is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz, the work of the engraver and of the hands of the goldsmith. Their clothing is blue and purple. They are all the work of skillful men.
KJVSilverH3701 spread into platesH7554(H8794) is broughtH935(H8714) from TarshishH8659, and goldH2091 from UphazH210, the workH4639 of the workmanH2796, and of the handsH3027 of the founderH6884(H8802): blueH8504 and purpleH713 is their clothingH3830: they are all the workH4639 of cunningH2450 men.
10 But Yahweh is the true God. He is the living God, and an everlasting King. At his wrath, the earth trembles. The nations aren’t able to withstand his indignation.
KJVBut the LORDH3068 is the trueH571 GodH430, he is the livingH2416 GodH430, and an everlastingH5769 kingH4428: at his wrathH7110 the earthH776 shall trembleH7493(H8799), and the nationsH1471 shall not be able to abideH3557(H8686) his indignationH2195.
11 “You shall say this to them: ‘The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth will perish from the earth, and from under the heavens.’”
KJVThusH1836 shall ye sayH560(H8748) unto them, The godsH426 that have notH3809 madeH5648(H8754) the heavensH8065 and the earthH778, even they shall perishH7(H8748) from the earthH772, and from underH8460 theseH429 heavensH8065.
12 God has made the earth by his power. He has established the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding has he stretched out the heavens.
KJVHe hath madeH6213(H8802) the earthH776 by his powerH3581, he hath establishedH3559(H8688) the worldH8398 by his wisdomH2451, and hath stretched outH5186(H8804) the heavensH8064 by his discretionH8394.
13 When he utters his voice, the waters in the heavens roar, and he causes the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth. He makes lightnings for the rain, and brings the wind out of his treasuries.
KJVWhen he utterethH5414(H8800) his voiceH6963, there is a multitudeH1995 of watersH4325 in the heavensH8064, and he causeth the vapoursH5387 to ascendH5927(H8686) from the endsH7097 of the earthH776; he makethH6213(H8804) lightningsH1300 with rainH4306, and bringeth forthH3318(H8686) the windH7307 out of his treasuresH214.
14 Every man has become brutish and without knowledge. Every goldsmith is disappointed by his engraved image; for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them.
KJVEvery manH120 is brutishH1197(H8738) in his knowledgeH1847: every founderH6884(H8802) is confoundedH3001(H8689) by the graven imageH6459: for his molten imageH5262 is falsehoodH8267, and there is no breathH7307 in them.
15 They are vanity, a work of delusion. In the time of their visitation they will perish.
KJVThey are vanityH1892, and the workH4639 of errorsH8595: in the timeH6256 of their visitationH6486 they shall perishH6(H8799).
16 The portion of Jacob is not like these; for he is the maker of all things; and Israel is the tribe of his inheritance. Yahweh of Armies is his name.
KJVThe portionH2506 of JacobH3290 is not like them: for he is the formerH3335(H8802) of all things; and IsraelH3478 is the rodH7626 of his inheritanceH5159: The LORDH3068 of hostsH6635 is his nameH8034.
17 Gather up your wares out of the land, you who live under siege.
KJVGather upH622(H8798) thy waresH3666 out of the landH776, O inhabitantH3427(H8802) of the fortressH4692.
18 For Yahweh says, “Behold, I will sling out the inhabitants of the land at this time, and will distress them, that they may feel it.”
KJVFor thus saithH559(H8804) the LORDH3068, Behold, I will slingH7049(H8802) out the inhabitantsH3427(H8802) of the landH776 at this onceH6471, and will distressH6887(H8689) them, that they may findH4672(H8799) it so.
19 Woe is me because of my injury! My wound is serious; but I said, “Truly this is my grief, and I must bear it.”
KJVWoeH188 is me for my hurtH7667! my woundH4347 is grievousH2470(H8737): but I saidH559(H8804), TrulyH389 this is a griefH2483, and I must bearH5375(H8799) it.
20 My tent has been destroyed, and all my cords are broken. My children have gone away from me, and they are no more. There is no one to spread my tent any more, to set up my curtains.
KJVMy tabernacleH168 is spoiledH7703(H8795), and all my cordsH4340 are brokenH5423(H8738): my childrenH1121 are gone forthH3318(H8804) of me, and they are not: there is none to stretch forthH5186(H8802) my tentH168 any more, and to set upH6965(H8688) my curtainsH3407.
21 For the shepherds have become brutish, and have not inquired of Yahweh. Therefore they have not prospered, and all their flocks have scattered.
KJVFor the pastorsH7462(H8802) are become brutishH1197(H8738), and have not soughtH1875(H8804) the LORDH3068: therefore they shall not prosperH7919(H8689), and all their flocksH4830 shall be scatteredH6327(H8738).
22 The voice of news, behold, it comes, and a great commotion out of the north country, to make the cities of Judah a desolation, a dwelling place of jackals.
KJVBehold, the noiseH6963 of the bruitH8052 is comeH935(H8802), and a greatH1419 commotionH7494 out of the northH6828 countryH776, to makeH7760(H8800) the citiesH5892 of JudahH3063 desolateH8077, and a denH4583 of dragonsH8577.
23 Yahweh, I know that the way of man is not in himself. It is not in man who walks to direct his steps.
KJVO LORDH3068, I knowH3045(H8804) that the wayH1870 of manH120 is not in himself: it is not in manH376 that walkethH1980(H8802) to directH3559(H8687) his stepsH6806.
24 Yahweh, correct me, but gently; not in your anger, lest you reduce me to nothing.
KJVO LORDH3068, correctH3256(H8761) me, but with judgmentH4941; not in thine angerH639, lest thou bring me to nothingH4591(H8686).
25 Pour out your wrath on the nations that don’t know you, and on the families that don’t call on your name; for they have devoured Jacob. Yes, they have devoured him, consumed him, and have laid waste his habitation.
KJVPour outH8210(H8798) thy furyH2534 upon the heathenH1471 that knowH3045(H8804) thee not, and upon the familiesH4940 that callH7121(H8804) not on thy nameH8034: for they have eaten upH398(H8804) JacobH3290, and devouredH398(H8804) him, and consumedH3615(H8762) him, and have made his habitationH5116 desolateH8074(H8689).
