¹Thus said Yahweh, “Go, and buy a potter’s earthen container, and take some of the elders of the people and of the elders of the priests;

² and go out to the valley of the son of Hinnom, which is by the entry of the gate Harsith, and proclaim there the words that I will tell you.

³ Say, ‘Hear Yahweh’s word, kings of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem: Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel says, “Behold, I will bring evil on this place, which whoever hears, his ears will tingle.

KJVAnd say^H559^(H8804), Hear^H8085^(H8798) ye the word^H1697 of the LORD^H3068, O kings^H4428 of Judah^H3063, and inhabitants^H3427^(H8802) of Jerusalem^H3389; Thus saith^H559^(H8804) the LORD^H3068 of hosts^H6635, the God^H430 of Israel^H3478; Behold, I will bring^H935^(H8688) evil^H7451 upon this place^H4725, the which whosoever heareth^H8085^(H8802), his ears^H241 shall tingle^H6750^(H8799).

⁴ Because they have forsaken me, and have defiled this place, and have burned incense in it to other gods that they didn’t know—they, their fathers, and the kings of Judah—and have filled this place with the blood of innocents,

⁵ and have built the high places of Baal to burn their children in the fire for burnt offerings to Baal, which I didn’t command, nor speak, which didn’t even enter into my mind.

⁶ Therefore, behold, the days come,” says Yahweh, “that this place will no more be called ‘Topheth’, nor ‘The Valley of the son of Hinnom’, but ‘The valley of Slaughter’.

⁷ “‘“I will make the counsel of Judah and Jerusalem void in this place. I will cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies, and by the hand of those who seek their life. I will give their dead bodies to be food for the birds of the sky and for the animals of the earth.

KJVAnd I will make void^H1238^(H8804) the counsel^H6098 of Judah^H3063 and Jerusalem^H3389 in this place^H4725; and I will cause them to fall^H5307^(H8689) by the sword^H2719 before^H6440 their enemies^H341^(H8802), and by the hands^H3027 of them that seek^H1245^(H8764) their lives^H5315: and their carcases^H5038 will I give^H5414^(H8804) to be meat^H3978 for the fowls^H5775 of the heaven^H8064, and for the beasts^H929 of the earth^H776.

⁸ I will make this city an astonishment and a hissing. Everyone who passes by it will be astonished and hiss because of all its plagues.

KJVAnd I will make^H7760^(H8804) this city^H5892 desolate^H8047, and an hissing^H8322; every one that passeth^H5674^(H8802) thereby shall be astonished^H8074^(H8799) and hiss^H8319^(H8799) because of all the plagues^H4347 thereof.

⁹ I will cause them to eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters. They will each eat the flesh of his friend in the siege and in the distress with which their enemies, and those who seek their life, will distress them.”’

¹⁰ “Then you shall break the container in the sight of the men who go with you,

¹¹ and shall tell them, ‘Yahweh of Armies says: “Even so I will break this people and this city as one breaks a potter’s vessel, that can’t be made whole again. They will bury in Topheth until there is no place to bury.

KJVAnd shalt say^H559^(H8804) unto them, Thus saith^H559^(H8804) the LORD^H3068 of hosts^H6635; Even so^H3602 will I break^H7665^(H8799) this people^H5971 and this city^H5892, as one breaketh^H7665^(H8799) a potter's^H3335^(H8802) vessel^H3627, that cannot^H3201^(H8799) be made whole again^H7495^(H8736): and they shall bury^H6912^(H8799) them in Tophet^H8612, till there be no place^H4725 to bury^H6912^(H8800).

¹² This is what I will do to this place,” says Yahweh, “and to its inhabitants, even making this city as Topheth.

KJVThus will I do^H6213^(H8799) unto this place^H4725, saith^H5002^(H8803) the LORD^H3068, and to the inhabitants^H3427^(H8802) thereof, and even make^H5414^(H8800) this city^H5892 as Tophet^H8612:

¹³ The houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah, which are defiled, will be as the place of Topheth, even all the houses on whose roofs they have burned incense to all the army of the sky and have poured out drink offerings to other gods.”’”

¹⁴ Then Jeremiah came from Topheth, where Yahweh had sent him to prophesy, and he stood in the court of Yahweh’s house, and said to all the people:

KJVThen came^H935^(H8799) Jeremiah^H3414 from Tophet^H8612, whither the LORD^H3068 had sent^H7971^(H8804) him to prophesy^H5012^(H8736); and he stood^H5975^(H8799) in the court^H2691 of the LORD'S^H3068 house^H1004; and said^H559^(H8799) to all the people^H5971,

¹⁵ “Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel says, ‘Behold, I will bring on this city and on all its towns all the evil that I have pronounced against it, because they have made their neck stiff, that they may not hear my words.’”

KJVThus saith^H559^(H8804) the LORD^H3068 of hosts^H6635, the God^H430 of Israel^H3478; Behold, I will bring^H935^(H8688) upon this city^H5892 and upon all her towns^H5892 all the evil^H7451 that I have pronounced^H1696^(H8765) against it, because they have hardened^H7185^(H8689) their necks^H6203, that they might not hear^H8085^(H8800) my words^H1697.

¹The word which came to Jeremiah from Yahweh, saying,

² “Arise, and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will cause you to hear my words.”

³ Then I went down to the potter’s house, and behold, he was making something on the wheels.

⁴ When the vessel that he made of the clay was marred in the hand of the potter, he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.

⁵ Then Yahweh’s word came to me, saying,

⁶ “House of Israel, can’t I do with you as this potter?” says Yahweh. “Behold, as the clay in the potter’s hand, so are you in my hand, house of Israel.

KJVO house^H1004 of Israel^H3478, cannot^H3201^(H8799) I do^H6213^(H8800) with you as this potter^H3335^(H8802)? saith^H5002^(H8803) the LORD^H3068. Behold, as the clay^H2563 is in the potter's^H3335^(H8802) hand^H3027, so are ye in mine hand^H3027, O house^H1004 of Israel^H3478.

⁷ At the instant I speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up and to break down and to destroy it,

KJVAt what instant^H7281 I shall speak^H1696^(H8762) concerning a nation^H1471, and concerning a kingdom^H4467, to pluck up^H5428^(H8800), and to pull down^H5422^(H8800), and to destroy^H6^(H8687) it;

⁸ if that nation, concerning which I have spoken, turns from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do to them.

KJVIf that nation^H1471, against whom I have pronounced^H1696^(H8765), turn^H7725^(H8804) from their evil^H7451, I will repent^H5162^(H8738) of the evil^H7451 that I thought^H2803^(H8804) to do^H6213^(H8800) unto them.

⁹ At the instant I speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it,

KJVAnd at what instant^H7281 I shall speak^H1696^(H8762) concerning a nation^H1471, and concerning a kingdom^H4467, to build^H1129^(H8800) and to plant^H5193^(H8800) it;

¹⁰ if they do that which is evil in my sight, that they don’t obey my voice, then I will repent of the good with which I said I would benefit them.

KJVIf it do^H6213^(H8804) evil^H7451 in my sight^H5869, that it obey^H8085^(H8800) not my voice^H6963, then I will repent^H5162^(H8738) of the good^H2896, wherewith I said^H559^(H8804) I would benefit^H3190^(H8687) them.

¹¹ “Now therefore, speak to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, ‘Yahweh says: “Behold, I frame evil against you, and devise a plan against you. Everyone return from his evil way now, and amend your ways and your doings.”’

¹² But they say, ‘It is in vain; for we will walk after our own plans, and we will each follow the stubbornness of his evil heart.’”

¹³ Therefore Yahweh says: “Ask now among the nations, ‘Who has heard such things?’ The virgin of Israel has done a very horrible thing.

KJVTherefore thus saith^H559^(H8804) the LORD^H3068; Ask^H7592^(H8798) ye now among the heathen^H1471, who hath heard^H8085^(H8804) such things: the virgin^H1330 of Israel^H3478 hath done^H6213^(H8804) a very^H3966 horrible thing^H8186.

¹⁴ Will the snow of Lebanon fail from the rock of the field? Will the cold waters that flow down from afar be dried up?

KJVWill a man leave^H5800^(H8799) the snow^H7950 of Lebanon^H3844 which cometh from the rock^H6697 of the field^H7704? or shall the cold^H7119 flowing^H5140^(H8802) waters^H4325 that come from another place^H2114^(H8801) be forsaken^H5428^(H8735)?

¹⁵ For my people have forgotten me. They have burned incense to false gods. They have been made to stumble in their ways in the ancient paths, to walk in byways, in a way not built up,

¹⁶ to make their land an astonishment, and a perpetual hissing. Everyone who passes by it will be astonished, and shake his head.

¹⁷ I will scatter them as with an east wind before the enemy. I will show them the back, and not the face, in the day of their calamity.

¹⁸ Then they said, “Come! Let’s devise plans against Jeremiah; for the law won’t perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let’s strike him with the tongue, and let’s not give heed to any of his words.”

¹⁹ Give heed to me, Yahweh, and listen to the voice of those who contend with me.

²⁰ Should evil be recompensed for good? For they have dug a pit for my soul. Remember how I stood before you to speak good for them, to turn away your wrath from them.

²¹ Therefore deliver up their children to the famine, and give them over to the power of the sword. Let their wives become childless and widows. Let their men be killed and their young men struck by the sword in battle.
