¹But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was angry.

² He prayed to Yahweh, and said, “Please, Yahweh, wasn’t this what I said when I was still in my own country? Therefore I hurried to flee to Tarshish, for I knew that you are a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, and you relent of doing harm.

KJVAnd he prayed^H6419^(H8691) unto the LORD^H3068, and said^H559^(H8799), I pray^H577 thee, O LORD^H3068, was not this my saying^H1697, when I was yet in my country^H127? Therefore I fled^H1272^(H8800) before^H6923^(H8765) unto Tarshish^H8659: for I knew^H3045^(H8804) that thou art a gracious^H2587 God^H410, and merciful^H7349, slow^H750 to anger^H639, and of great^H7227 kindness^H2617, and repentest^H5162^(H8737) thee of the evil^H7451.

³ Therefore now, Yahweh, take, I beg you, my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to live.”

⁴ Yahweh said, “Is it right for you to be angry?”

⁵ Then Jonah went out of the city and sat on the east side of the city, and there made himself a booth and sat under it in the shade, until he might see what would become of the city.

⁶ Yahweh God prepared a vine and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shade over his head to deliver him from his discomfort. So Jonah was exceedingly glad because of the vine.

KJVAnd the LORD^H3068 God^H430 prepared^H4487^(H8762) a gourd^H7021, and made it to come up^H5927^(H8799) over Jonah^H3124, that it might be a shadow^H6738 over his head^H7218, to deliver^H5337^(H8687) him from his grief^H7451. So Jonah^H3124 was exceeding^H1419^H8057 glad^H8055^(H8799) of the gourd^H7021.

⁷ But God prepared a worm at dawn the next day, and it chewed on the vine so that it withered.

⁸ When the sun arose, God prepared a sultry east wind; and the sun beat on Jonah’s head, so that he was faint and requested for himself that he might die. He said, “It is better for me to die than to live.”

⁹ God said to Jonah, “Is it right for you to be angry about the vine?” He said, “I am right to be angry, even to death.”

¹⁰ Yahweh said, “You have been concerned for the vine, for which you have not labored, neither made it grow; which came up in a night and perished in a night.

KJVThen said^H559^(H8799) the LORD^H3068, Thou hast had pity^H2347^(H8804) on the gourd^H7021, for the which thou hast not laboured^H5998^(H8804), neither madest it grow^H1431^(H8765); which came up in a night^H1121^H3915, and perished^H6^(H8804) in a night^H1121^H3915:

¹¹ Shouldn’t I be concerned for Nineveh, that great city, in which are more than one hundred twenty thousand persons who can’t discern between their right hand and their left hand, and also many animals?”

KJVAnd should not I spare^H2347^(H8799) Nineveh^H5210, that great^H1419 city^H5892, wherein are^H3426 more^H7235^(H8687) than sixscore^H8147^H6240 thousand^H7239 persons^H120 that cannot discern^H3045^(H8804) between their right hand^H3225 and their left hand^H8040; and also much^H7227 cattle^H929?

¹Yahweh’s word came to Jonah the second time, saying,

KJVAnd the word^H1697 of the LORD^H3068 came unto Jonah^H3124 the second^H8145 time, saying^H559^(H8800),

² “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach to it the message that I give you.”

KJVArise^H6965^(H8798), go^H3212^(H8798) unto Nineveh^H5210, that great^H1419 city^H5892, and preach^H7121^(H8798) unto it the preaching^H7150 that I bid^H1696^(H8802) thee.

³ So Jonah arose, and went to Nineveh, according to Yahweh’s word. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, three days’ journey across.

⁴ Jonah began to enter into the city a day’s journey, and he cried out, and said, “In forty days, Nineveh will be overthrown!”

⁵ The people of Nineveh believed God; and they proclaimed a fast and put on sackcloth, from their greatest even to their least.

⁶ The news reached the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, took off his royal robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.

⁷ He made a proclamation and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, “Let neither man nor animal, herd nor flock, taste anything; let them not feed, nor drink water;

KJVAnd he caused it to be proclaimed^H2199^(H8686) and published^H559^(H8799) through Nineveh^H5210 by the decree^H2940 of the king^H4428 and his nobles^H1419, saying^H559^(H8800), Let neither man^H120 nor beast^H929, herd^H1241 nor flock^H6629, taste^H2938^(H8799) any thing^H3972: let them not feed^H7462^(H8799), nor drink^H8354^(H8799) water^H4325:

⁸ but let them be covered with sackcloth, both man and animal, and let them cry mightily to God. Yes, let them turn everyone from his evil way and from the violence that is in his hands.

⁹ Who knows whether God will not turn and relent, and turn away from his fierce anger, so that we might not perish?”

¹⁰ God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way. God relented of the disaster which he said he would do to them, and he didn’t do it.

KJVAnd God^H430 saw^H7200^(H8799) their works^H4639, that they turned^H7725^(H8804) from their evil^H7451 way^H1870; and God^H430 repented^H5162^(H8735) of the evil^H7451, that he had said^H1696^(H8765) that he would do^H6213^(H8800) unto them; and he did^H6213^(H8804) it not.
