¹In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, in the first day of the month, Yahweh’s word came by Haggai the prophet, to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, saying,

KJVIn the second^H8147 year^H8141 of Darius^H1867 the king^H4428, in the sixth^H8345 month^H2320, in the first^H259 day^H3117 of the month^H2320, came the word^H1697 of the LORD^H3068 by^H3027 Haggai^H2292 the prophet^H5030 unto Zerubbabel^H2216 the son^H1121 of Shealtiel^H7597, governor^H6346 of Judah^H3063, and to Joshua^H3091 the son^H1121 of Josedech^H3087, the high^H1419 priest^H3548, saying^H559^(H8800),

² “This is what Yahweh of Armies says: These people say, ‘The time hasn’t yet come, the time for Yahweh’s house to be built.’”

KJVThus speaketh^H559^(H8804) the LORD^H3068 of hosts^H6635, saying^H559^(H8800), This people^H5971 say^H559^(H8804), The time^H6256 is not come^H935^(H8800), the time^H6256 that the LORD'S^H3068 house^H1004 should be built^H1129^(H8736).

³ Then Yahweh’s word came by Haggai the prophet, saying,

KJVThen came the word^H1697 of the LORD^H3068 by^H3027 Haggai^H2292 the prophet^H5030, saying^H559^(H8800),

⁴ “Is it a time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, while this house lies waste?

KJVIs it time^H6256 for you, O ye, to dwell^H3427^(H8800) in your cieled^H5603^(H8803) houses^H1004, and this house^H1004 lie waste^H2720?

⁵ Now therefore this is what Yahweh of Armies says: ‘Consider your ways.

KJVNow therefore thus saith^H559^(H8804) the LORD^H3068 of hosts^H6635; Consider^H7760^(H8798)^H3824 your ways^H1870.

⁶ You have sown much, and bring in little. You eat, but you don’t have enough. You drink, but you aren’t filled with drink. You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm; and he who earns wages earns wages to put them into a bag with holes in it.’

⁷ “This is what Yahweh of Armies says: ‘Consider your ways.

⁸ Go up to the mountain, bring wood, and build the house. I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified,” says Yahweh.

⁹ “You looked for much, and, behold, it came to little; and when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why?” says Yahweh of Armies, “Because of my house that lies waste, while each of you is busy with his own house.

KJVYe looked^H6437^(H8800) for much^H7235^(H8687), and, lo, it came to little^H4592; and when ye brought^H935^(H8689) it home^H1004, I did blow^H5301^(H8804) upon it. Why? saith^H5002^(H8803) the LORD^H3068 of hosts^H6635. Because^H3282 of mine house^H1004 that is waste^H2720, and ye run^H7323^(H8801) every man^H376 unto his own house^H1004.

¹⁰ Therefore for your sake the heavens withhold the dew, and the earth withholds its fruit.

KJVTherefore the heaven^H8064 over you is stayed^H3607^(H8804) from dew^H2919, and the earth^H776 is stayed^H3607^(H8804) from her fruit^H2981.

¹¹ I called for a drought on the land, on the mountains, on the grain, on the new wine, on the oil, on that which the ground produces, on men, on livestock, and on all the labor of the hands.”

¹² Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel and Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed Yahweh their God’s voice, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as Yahweh their God had sent him; and the people feared Yahweh.

¹³ Then Haggai, Yahweh’s messenger, spoke Yahweh’s message to the people, saying, “I am with you,” says Yahweh.

¹⁴ Yahweh stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and worked on the house of Yahweh of Armies, their God,

KJVAnd the LORD^H3068 stirred up^H5782^(H8686) the spirit^H7307 of Zerubbabel^H2216 the son^H1121 of Shealtiel^H7597, governor^H6346 of Judah^H3063, and the spirit^H7307 of Joshua^H3091 the son^H1121 of Josedech^H3087, the high^H1419 priest^H3548, and the spirit^H7307 of all the remnant^H7611 of the people^H5971; and they came^H935^(H8799) and did^H6213^(H8799) work^H4399 in the house^H1004 of the LORD^H3068 of hosts^H6635, their God^H430,

¹⁵ in the twenty-fourth day of the month, in the sixth month, in the second year of Darius the king.

¹Woe to her who is rebellious and polluted, the oppressing city!

KJVWoe^H1945 to her that is filthy^H4754^(H8802) and polluted^H1351^(H8737), to the oppressing^H3238^(H8802) city^H5892!

² She didn’t obey the voice. She didn’t receive correction. She didn’t trust in Yahweh. She didn’t draw near to her God.

KJVShe obeyed^H8085^(H8804) not the voice^H6963; she received^H3947^(H8804) not correction^H4148; she trusted^H982^(H8804) not in the LORD^H3068; she drew not near^H7126^(H8804) to her God^H430.

³ Her princes within her are roaring lions. Her judges are evening wolves. They leave nothing until the next day.

KJVHer princes^H8269 within^H7130 her are roaring^H7580^(H8802) lions^H738; her judges^H8199^(H8802) are evening^H6153 wolves^H2061; they gnaw not the bones^H1633^(H8804) till the morrow^H1242.

⁴ Her prophets are arrogant and treacherous people. Her priests have profaned the sanctuary. They have done violence to the law.

⁵ Yahweh, within her, is righteous. He will do no wrong. Every morning he brings his justice to light. He doesn’t fail, but the unjust know no shame.

KJVThe just^H6662 LORD^H3068 is in the midst^H7130 thereof; he will not do^H6213^(H8799) iniquity^H5766: every^H1242 morning^H1242 doth he bring^H5414^(H8799) his judgment^H4941 to light^H216, he faileth^H5737^(H8738) not; but the unjust^H5767 knoweth^H3045^(H8802) no shame^H1322.

⁶ I have cut off nations. Their battlements are desolate. I have made their streets waste, so that no one passes by. Their cities are destroyed, so that there is no man, so that there is no inhabitant.

⁷ I said, “Just fear me. Receive correction,” so that her dwelling won’t be cut off, according to all that I have appointed concerning her. But they rose early and corrupted all their doings.

⁸ “Therefore wait for me”, says Yahweh, “until the day that I rise up to the prey, for my determination is to gather the nations, that I may assemble the kingdoms to pour on them my indignation, even all my fierce anger, for all the earth will be devoured with the fire of my jealousy.

⁹ For then I will purify the lips of the peoples, that they may all call on Yahweh’s name, to serve him shoulder to shoulder.

¹⁰ From beyond the rivers of Cush, my worshipers, even the daughter of my dispersed people, will bring my offering.

¹¹ In that day you will not be disappointed for all your doings in which you have transgressed against me; for then I will take away out from among you your proudly exulting ones, and you will no more be arrogant in my holy mountain.

¹² But I will leave among you an afflicted and poor people, and they will take refuge in Yahweh’s name.

¹³ The remnant of Israel will not do iniquity nor speak lies, neither will a deceitful tongue be found in their mouth, for they will feed and lie down, and no one will make them afraid.”

¹⁴ Sing, daughter of Zion! Shout, Israel! Be glad and rejoice with all your heart, daughter of Jerusalem.

¹⁵ Yahweh has taken away your judgments. He has thrown out your enemy. The King of Israel, Yahweh, is among you. You will not be afraid of evil any more.

¹⁶ In that day, it will be said to Jerusalem, “Don’t be afraid, Zion. Don’t let your hands be weak.”

¹⁷ Yahweh, your God, is among you, a mighty one who will save. He will rejoice over you with joy. He will calm you in his love. He will rejoice over you with singing.

¹⁸ I will remove those who grieve about the appointed feasts from you. They are a burden and a reproach to you.

¹⁹ Behold, at that time I will deal with all those who afflict you; and I will save those who are lame and gather those who were driven away. I will give them praise and honor, whose shame has been in all the earth.
