Numbers 14
WEB·Numbers 14
1All the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night.
KJVAnd all the congregationH5712 lifted upH5375(H8799) their voiceH6963, and criedH5414(H8799); and the peopleH5971 weptH1058(H8799) that nightH3915.
2 All the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron. The whole congregation said to them, “We wish that we had died in the land of Egypt, or that we had died in this wilderness!
KJVAnd all the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 murmuredH3885(H8735) against MosesH4872 and against AaronH175: and the whole congregationH5712 saidH559(H8799) unto them, Would GodH3863 that we had diedH4191(H8804) in the landH776 of EgyptH4714! or would GodH3863 we had diedH4191(H8804) in this wildernessH4057!
3 Why does Yahweh bring us to this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will be captured or killed! Wouldn’t it be better for us to return into Egypt?”
KJVAnd wherefore hath the LORDH3068 broughtH935(H8688) us unto this landH776, to fallH5307(H8800) by the swordH2719, that our wivesH802 and our childrenH2945 should be a preyH957? were it not betterH2896 for us to returnH7725(H8800) into EgyptH4714?
4 They said to one another, “Let’s choose a leader, and let’s return into Egypt.”
KJVAnd they saidH559(H8799) oneH376 to anotherH251, Let us makeH5414(H8799) a captainH7218, and let us returnH7725(H8799) into EgyptH4714.
5 Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.
KJVThen MosesH4872 and AaronH175 fellH5307(H8799) on their facesH6440 beforeH6440 all the assemblyH6951 of the congregationH5712 of the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478.
6 Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were of those who spied out the land, tore their clothes.
KJVAnd JoshuaH3091 the sonH1121 of NunH5126, and CalebH3612 the sonH1121 of JephunnehH3312, which were of them that searchedH8446(H8802) the landH776, rentH7167(H8804) their clothesH899:
7 They spoke to all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying, “The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceedingly good land.
KJVAnd they spakeH559(H8799) unto all the companyH5712 of the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478, sayingH559(H8800), The landH776, which we passedH5674(H8804) through to searchH8446(H8800) it, is an exceedingH3966H3966 goodH2896 landH776.
8 If Yahweh delights in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it to us: a land which flows with milk and honey.
KJVIf the LORDH3068 delightH2654(H8804) in us, then he will bringH935(H8689) us into this landH776, and giveH5414(H8804) it us; a landH776 which flowethH2100(H8802) with milkH2461 and honeyH1706.
9 Only don’t rebel against Yahweh, neither fear the people of the land; for they are bread for us. Their defense is removed from over them, and Yahweh is with us. Don’t fear them.”
KJVOnly rebelH4775(H8799) not ye against the LORDH3068, neither fearH3372(H8799) ye the peopleH5971 of the landH776; for they are breadH3899 for us: their defenceH6738 is departedH5493(H8804) from them, and the LORDH3068 is with us: fearH3372(H8799) them not.
10 But all the congregation threatened to stone them with stones. Yahweh’s glory appeared in the Tent of Meeting to all the children of Israel.
KJVBut all the congregationH5712 badeH559(H8799) stoneH7275(H8800) them with stonesH68. And the gloryH3519 of the LORDH3068 appearedH7200(H8738) in the tabernacleH168 of the congregationH4150 before all the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478.
11 Yahweh said to Moses, “How long will this people despise me? How long will they not believe in me, for all the signs which I have worked among them?
KJVAnd the LORDH3068 saidH559(H8799) unto MosesH4872, How long will this peopleH5971 provokeH5006(H8762) me? and how long will it be ereH3808 they believeH539(H8686) me, for all the signsH226 which I have shewedH6213(H8804) amongH7130 them?
12 I will strike them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they.”
KJVI will smiteH5221(H8686) them with the pestilenceH1698, and disinheritH3423(H8686) them, and will makeH6213(H8799) of thee a greaterH1419 nationH1471 and mightierH6099 than they.
13 Moses said to Yahweh, “Then the Egyptians will hear it; for you brought up this people in your might from among them.
KJVAnd MosesH4872 saidH559(H8799) unto the LORDH3068, Then the EgyptiansH4714 shall hearH8085(H8804) it,(for thou broughtest upH5927(H8689) this peopleH5971 in thy mightH3581 from amongH7130 them;)
14 They will tell it to the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that you Yahweh are among this people; for you Yahweh are seen face to face, and your cloud stands over them, and you go before them, in a pillar of cloud by day, and in a pillar of fire by night.
KJVAnd they will tellH559(H8804) it to the inhabitantsH3427(H8802) of this landH776: for they have heardH8085(H8804) that thou LORDH3068 art amongH7130 this peopleH5971, that thou LORDH3068 art seenH7200(H8738) faceH5869 to faceH5869, and that thy cloudH6051 standethH5975(H8802) over them, and that thou goestH1980(H8802) beforeH6440 them, by day timeH3119 in a pillarH5982 of a cloudH6051, and in a pillarH5982 of fireH784 by nightH3915.
15 Now if you killed this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of you will speak, saying,
KJVNow if thou shalt killH4191(H8689) all this peopleH5971 as oneH259 manH376, then the nationsH1471 which have heardH8085(H8804) the fameH8088 of thee will speakH559(H8804), sayingH559(H8800),
16 ‘Because Yahweh was not able to bring this people into the land which he swore to them, therefore he has slain them in the wilderness.’
KJVBecause the LORDH3068 was notH1115 ableH3201(H8800) to bringH935(H8687) this peopleH5971 into the landH776 which he swareH7650(H8738) unto them, therefore he hath slainH7819(H8799) them in the wildernessH4057.
17 Now please let the power of the Lord be great, according as you have spoken, saying,
KJVAnd now, I beseech thee, let the powerH3581 of my LordH136 be greatH1431(H8799), accordingH834 as thou hast spokenH1696(H8765), sayingH559(H8800),
18 ‘Yahweh is slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, forgiving iniquity and disobedience; and he will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and on the fourth generation.’
KJVThe LORDH3068 is longsufferingH750H639, and of greatH7227 mercyH2617, forgivingH5375(H8802) iniquityH5771 and transgressionH6588, and by no meansH5352(H8763) clearingH5352(H8762) the guilty, visitingH6485(H8802) the iniquityH5771 of the fathersH1 upon the childrenH1121 unto the thirdH8029 and fourthH7256 generation.
19 Please pardon the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of your loving kindness, and just as you have forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.”
KJVPardonH5545(H8798), I beseech thee, the iniquityH5771 of this peopleH5971 according unto the greatnessH1433 of thy mercyH2617, and as thou hast forgivenH5375(H8804) this peopleH5971, from EgyptH4714 even until nowH2008.
20 Yahweh said, “I have pardoned according to your word;
KJVAnd the LORDH3068 saidH559(H8799), I have pardonedH5545(H8804) according to thy wordH1697:
21 but in very deed—as I live, and as all the earth shall be filled with Yahweh’s glory—
KJVBut as trulyH199 as I liveH2416, all the earthH776 shall be filledH4390(H8735) with the gloryH3519 of the LORDH3068.
22 because all those men who have seen my glory and my signs, which I worked in Egypt and in the wilderness, yet have tempted me these ten times, and have not listened to my voice;
KJVBecause all those menH582 which have seenH7200(H8802) my gloryH3519, and my miraclesH226, which I didH6213(H8804) in EgyptH4714 and in the wildernessH4057, and have temptedH5254(H8762)H853 me now these tenH6235 timesH6471, and have not hearkenedH8085(H8804) to my voiceH6963;
23 surely they shall not see the land which I swore to their fathers, neither shall any of those who despised me see it.
KJVSurely they shall notH518 seeH7200(H8799) the landH776 which I swareH7650(H8738) unto their fathersH1, neither shall any of them that provokedH5006(H8764) me seeH7200(H8799) it:
24 But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and has followed me fully, him I will bring into the land into which he went. His offspring shall possess it.
KJVBut my servantH5650 CalebH3612, becauseH6118 he had anotherH312 spiritH7307 with him, and hath followedH310 me fullyH4390(H8762), him will I bringH935(H8689) into the landH776 whereinto he wentH935(H8804); and his seedH2233 shall possessH3423(H8686) it.
25 Since the Amalekite and the Canaanite dwell in the valley, tomorrow turn and go into the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea.”
KJV(Now the AmalekitesH6003 and the CanaanitesH3669 dweltH3427(H8802) in the valleyH6010.) To morrowH4279 turnH6437(H8798) you, and getH5265(H8798) you into the wildernessH4057 by the wayH1870 of the RedH5488 seaH3220.
26 Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,
KJVAnd the LORDH3068 spakeH1696(H8762) unto MosesH4872 and unto AaronH175, sayingH559(H8800),
27 “How long shall I bear with this evil congregation that complain against me? I have heard the complaints of the children of Israel, which they complain against me.
KJVHow long shall I bear with this evilH7451 congregationH5712, which murmurH3885(H8688) against me? I have heardH8085(H8804) the murmuringsH8519 of the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478, which they murmurH3885(H8688) against me.
28 Tell them, ‘As I live, says Yahweh, surely as you have spoken in my ears, so I will do to you.
KJVSayH559(H8798) unto them, As truly asH3808 I liveH2416, saithH5002(H8803) the LORDH3068, as ye have spokenH1696(H8765) in mine earsH241, so will I doH6213(H8799) to you:
29 Your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness; and all who were counted of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, who have complained against me,
KJVYour carcasesH6297 shall fallH5307(H8799) in this wildernessH4057; and all that were numberedH6485(H8803) of you, according to your whole numberH4557, from twentyH6242 yearsH8141 oldH1121 and upwardH4605, which have murmuredH3885(H8689) against me,
30 surely you shall not come into the land concerning which I swore that I would make you dwell therein, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.
KJVDoubtless ye shall notH518 comeH935(H8799) into the landH776, concerning which I swareH3027H5375(H8804) to make you dwellH7931(H8763) therein, save CalebH3612 the sonH1121 of JephunnehH3312, and JoshuaH3091 the sonH1121 of NunH5126.
31 But I will bring in your little ones that you said should be captured or killed, and they shall know the land which you have rejected.
KJVBut your little onesH2945, which ye saidH559(H8804) should be a preyH957, them will I bring inH935(H8689), and they shall knowH3045(H8804) the landH776 which ye have despisedH3988(H8804).
32 But as for you, your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness.
KJVBut as for you, your carcasesH6297, they shall fallH5307(H8799) in this wildernessH4057.
33 Your children shall be wanderers in the wilderness forty years, and shall bear your prostitution, until your dead bodies are consumed in the wilderness.
KJVAnd your childrenH1121 shall wanderH7462(H8802) in the wildernessH4057 fortyH705 yearsH8141, and bearH5375(H8804) your whoredomsH2184, until your carcasesH6297 be wastedH8552(H8800) in the wildernessH4057.
34 After the number of the days in which you spied out the land, even forty days, for every day a year, you will bear your iniquities, even forty years, and you will know my alienation.’
KJVAfter the numberH4557 of the daysH3117 in which ye searchedH8446(H8804) the landH776, even fortyH705 daysH3117, each dayH3117 for a yearH8141H3117H8141, shall ye bearH5375(H8799) your iniquitiesH5771, even fortyH705 yearsH8141, and ye shall knowH3045(H8804) my breach of promiseH8569.
35 I, Yahweh, have spoken. I will surely do this to all this evil congregation who are gathered together against me. In this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.”
KJVI the LORDH3068 have saidH1696(H8765), I will surelyH518H3808 doH6213(H8799) itH2063 unto all this evilH7451 congregationH5712, that are gathered togetherH3259(H8737) against me: in this wildernessH4057 they shall be consumedH8552(H8735), and there they shall dieH4191(H8799).
36 The men whom Moses sent to spy out the land, who returned and made all the congregation to murmur against him by bringing up an evil report against the land,
KJVAnd the menH582, which MosesH4872 sentH7971(H8804) to searchH8446(H8800) the landH776, who returnedH7725(H8799), and made all the congregationH5712 to murmurH3885(H8686)(H8675)H3885(H8735) against him, by bringing upH3318(H8687) a slanderH1681 upon the landH776,
37 even those men who brought up an evil report of the land, died by the plague before Yahweh.
KJVEven thoseH582 menH582 that did bring upH3318(H8688) the evilH7451 reportH1681 upon the landH776, diedH4191(H8799) by the plagueH4046 beforeH6440 the LORDH3068.
38 But Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh remained alive of those men who went to spy out the land.
KJVBut JoshuaH3091 the sonH1121 of NunH5126, and CalebH3612 the sonH1121 of JephunnehH3312, which were of the menH1992H582 that wentH1980(H8802) to searchH8446(H8800) the landH776, livedH2421(H8804) still.
39 Moses told these words to all the children of Israel, and the people mourned greatly.
KJVAnd MosesH4872 toldH1696(H8762) these sayingsH1697 unto all the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478: and the peopleH5971 mournedH56(H8691) greatlyH3966.
40 They rose up early in the morning and went up to the top of the mountain, saying, “Behold, we are here, and will go up to the place which Yahweh has promised; for we have sinned.”
KJVAnd they rose up earlyH7925(H8686) in the morningH1242, and gat them upH5927(H8799) into the topH7218 of the mountainH2022, sayingH559(H8800), LoH2009, we be here, and will go upH5927(H8804) unto the placeH4725 which the LORDH3068 hath promisedH559(H8804): for we have sinnedH2398(H8804).
41 Moses said, “Why now do you disobey the commandment of Yahweh, since it shall not prosper?
KJVAnd MosesH4872 saidH559(H8799), Wherefore now do ye transgressH5674(H8802) the commandmentH6310 of the LORDH3068? but it shall not prosperH6743(H8799).
42 Don’t go up, for Yahweh isn’t among you; that way you won’t be struck down before your enemies.
KJVGo not upH5927(H8799), for the LORDH3068 is not amongH7130 you; that ye be not smittenH5062(H8735) beforeH6440 your enemiesH341(H8802).
43 For there the Amalekite and the Canaanite are before you, and you will fall by the sword because you turned back from following Yahweh; therefore Yahweh will not be with you.”
KJVFor the AmalekitesH6003 and the CanaanitesH3669 are there beforeH6440 you, and ye shall fallH5307(H8804) by the swordH2719: because ye are turnedH7725(H8804) awayH310 from the LORDH3068, therefore the LORDH3068 will not be with you.
44 But they presumed to go up to the top of the mountain. Nevertheless, the ark of Yahweh’s covenant and Moses didn’t depart out of the camp.
KJVBut they presumedH6075(H8686) to go upH5927(H8800) unto the hillH2022 topH7218: nevertheless the arkH727 of the covenantH1285 of the LORDH3068, and MosesH4872, departedH4185(H8804) not outH7130 of the campH4264.
45 Then the Amalekites came down, and the Canaanites who lived in that mountain, and struck them and beat them down even to Hormah.
KJVThen the AmalekitesH6003 came downH3381(H8799), and the CanaanitesH3669 which dweltH3427(H8802) in that hillH2022, and smoteH5221(H8686) them, and discomfitedH3807(H8686) them, even unto HormahH2767.
