¹Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,

² “Take a census of the sons of Kohath from among the sons of Levi, by their families, by their fathers’ houses,

KJVTake^H5375^(H8800) the sum^H7218 of the sons^H1121 of Kohath^H6955 from among^H8432 the sons^H1121 of Levi^H3878, after their families^H4940, by the house^H1004 of their fathers^H1,

³ from thirty years old and upward even until fifty years old, all who enter into the service to do the work in the Tent of Meeting.

⁴ “This is the service of the sons of Kohath in the Tent of Meeting, regarding the most holy things.

KJVThis shall be the service^H5656 of the sons^H1121 of Kohath^H6955 in the tabernacle^H168 of the congregation^H4150, about the most^H6944 holy things^H6944:

⁵ When the camp moves forward, Aaron shall go in with his sons; and they shall take down the veil of the screen, cover the ark of the Testimony with it,

KJVAnd when the camp^H4264 setteth forward^H5265^(H8800), Aaron^H175 shall come^H935^(H8804), and his sons^H1121, and they shall take down^H3381^(H8689) the covering^H4539 vail^H6532, and cover^H3680^(H8765) the ark^H727 of testimony^H5715 with it:

⁶ put a covering of sealskin on it, spread a blue cloth over it, and put in its poles.

⁷ “On the table of show bread they shall spread a blue cloth, and put on it the dishes, the spoons, the bowls, and the cups with which to pour out; and the continual bread shall be on it.

⁸ They shall spread on them a scarlet cloth, and cover it with a covering of sealskin, and shall put in its poles.

⁹ “They shall take a blue cloth and cover the lamp stand of the light, its lamps, its snuffers, its snuff dishes, and all its oil vessels, with which they minister to it.

¹⁰ They shall put it and all its vessels within a covering of sealskin, and shall put it on the frame.

¹¹ “On the golden altar they shall spread a blue cloth, and cover it with a covering of sealskin, and shall put in its poles.

¹³ “They shall take away the ashes from the altar, and spread a purple cloth on it.

¹⁴ They shall put on it all its vessels with which they minister about it, the fire pans, the meat hooks, the shovels, and the basins—all the vessels of the altar; and they shall spread on it a covering of sealskin, and put in its poles.

¹⁵ “When Aaron and his sons have finished covering the sanctuary and all the furniture of the sanctuary, as the camp moves forward; after that, the sons of Kohath shall come to carry it; but they shall not touch the sanctuary, lest they die. The sons of Kohath shall carry these things belonging to the Tent of Meeting.

¹⁶ “The duty of Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest shall be the oil for the light, the sweet incense, the continual meal offering, and the anointing oil, the requirements of all the tabernacle, and of all that is in it, the sanctuary, and its furnishings.”

¹⁷ Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,

¹⁸ “Don’t cut off the tribe of the families of the Kohathites from among the Levites;

KJVCut ye not off^H3772^(H8686) the tribe^H7626 of the families^H4940 of the Kohathites^H6956 from among^H8432 the Levites^H3881:

¹⁹ but do this to them, that they may live, and not die, when they approach the most holy things: Aaron and his sons shall go in and appoint everyone to his service and to his burden;

KJVBut thus do^H6213^(H8798) unto them, that they may live^H2421^(H8804), and not die^H4191^(H8799), when they approach^H5066^(H8800) unto the most^H6944 holy things^H6944: Aaron^H175 and his sons^H1121 shall go in^H935^(H8799), and appoint^H7760^(H8804) them every^H376 one^H376 to his service^H5656 and to his burden^H4853:

²⁰ but they shall not go in to see the sanctuary even for a moment, lest they die.”

²¹ Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

²² “Take a census of the sons of Gershon also, by their fathers’ houses, by their families;

²³ you shall count them from thirty years old and upward until fifty years old: all who enter in to wait on the service, to do the work in the Tent of Meeting.

²⁴ “This is the service of the families of the Gershonites, in serving and in bearing burdens:

²⁵ they shall carry the curtains of the tabernacle and the Tent of Meeting, its covering, the covering of sealskin that is on it, the screen for the door of the Tent of Meeting,

KJVAnd they shall bear^H5375^(H8804) the curtains^H3407 of the tabernacle^H4908, and the tabernacle^H168 of the congregation^H4150, his covering^H4372, and the covering^H4372 of the badgers^H8476' skins that is above^H4605 upon it, and the hanging^H4539 for the door^H6607 of the tabernacle^H168 of the congregation^H4150,

²⁶ the hangings of the court, the screen for the door of the gate of the court which is by the tabernacle and around the altar, their cords, and all the instruments of their service, and whatever shall be done with them. They shall serve in there.

KJVAnd the hangings^H7050 of the court^H2691, and the hanging^H4539 for the door^H6607 of the gate^H8179 of the court^H2691, which is by the tabernacle^H4908 and by the altar^H4196 round about^H5439, and their cords^H4340, and all the instruments^H3627 of their service^H5656, and all that is made^H6213^(H8735) for them: so shall they serve^H5647^(H8804).

²⁷ At the commandment of Aaron and his sons shall be all the service of the sons of the Gershonites, in all their burden and in all their service; and you shall appoint their duty to them in all their responsibilities.

KJVAt the appointment^H6310 of Aaron^H175 and his sons^H1121 shall be all the service^H5656 of the sons^H1121 of the Gershonites^H1649, in all their burdens^H4853, and in all their service^H5656: and ye shall appoint^H6485^(H8804) unto them in charge^H4931 all their burdens^H4853.

²⁸ This is the service of the families of the sons of the Gershonites in the Tent of Meeting. Their duty shall be under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.

²⁹ “As for the sons of Merari, you shall count them by their families, by their fathers’ houses;

³⁰ you shall count them from thirty years old and upward even to fifty years old—everyone who enters on the service, to do the work of the Tent of Meeting.

³¹ This is the duty of their burden, according to all their service in the Tent of Meeting: the tabernacle’s boards, its bars, its pillars, its sockets,

KJVAnd this is the charge^H4931 of their burden^H4853, according to all their service^H5656 in the tabernacle^H168 of the congregation^H4150; the boards^H7175 of the tabernacle^H4908, and the bars^H1280 thereof, and the pillars^H5982 thereof, and sockets^H134 thereof,

³² the pillars of the court around it, their sockets, their pins, their cords, with all their instruments, and with all their service. You shall appoint the instruments of the duty of their burden to them by name.

³³ This is the service of the families of the sons of Merari, according to all their service in the Tent of Meeting, under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.”

³⁵ from thirty years old and upward even to fifty years old, everyone who entered into the service for work in the Tent of Meeting.

⁴⁵ These are those who were counted of the families of the sons of Merari, whom Moses and Aaron counted according to the commandment of Yahweh by Moses.

⁴⁹ According to the commandment of Yahweh they were counted by Moses, everyone according to his service and according to his burden. Thus they were counted by him, as Yahweh commanded Moses.

³ These are the names of the sons of Aaron, the priests who were anointed, whom he consecrated to minister in the priest’s office.

⁴ Nadab and Abihu died before Yahweh when they offered strange fire before Yahweh in the wilderness of Sinai, and they had no children. Eleazar and Ithamar ministered in the priest’s office in the presence of Aaron their father.

KJVAnd Nadab^H5070 and Abihu^H30 died^H4191^(H8799) before^H6440 the LORD^H3068, when they offered^H7126^(H8687) strange^H2114^(H8801) fire^H784 before^H6440 the LORD^H3068, in the wilderness^H4057 of Sinai^H5514, and they had no children^H1121: and Eleazar^H499 and Ithamar^H385 ministered in the priest's office^H3547^(H8762) in the sight^H6440 of Aaron^H175 their father^H1.

⁵ Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

KJVAnd the LORD^H3068 spake^H1696^(H8762) unto Moses^H4872, saying^H559^(H8800),

⁶ “Bring the tribe of Levi near, and set them before Aaron the priest, that they may minister to him.

KJVBring^H7126 the tribe^H4294 of Levi^H3878 near^H7126^(H8685), and present^H5975^(H8689) them before^H6440 Aaron^H175 the priest^H3548, that they may minister^H8334^(H8765) unto him.

⁷ They shall keep his requirements, and the requirements of the whole congregation before the Tent of Meeting, to do the service of the tabernacle.

KJVAnd they shall keep^H8104^(H8804) his charge^H4931, and the charge^H4931 of the whole congregation^H5712 before^H6440 the tabernacle^H168 of the congregation^H4150, to do^H5647^(H8800) the service^H5656 of the tabernacle^H4908.

⁸ They shall keep all the furnishings of the Tent of Meeting, and the obligations of the children of Israel, to do the service of the tabernacle.

⁹ You shall give the Levites to Aaron and to his sons. They are wholly given to him on the behalf of the children of Israel.

KJVAnd thou shalt give^H5414^(H8804) the Levites^H3881 unto Aaron^H175 and to his sons^H1121: they are wholly given^H5414^(H8803) unto him out of the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478.

¹⁰ You shall appoint Aaron and his sons, and they shall keep their priesthood, but the stranger who comes near shall be put to death.”

¹¹ Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

¹² “Behold, I have taken the Levites from among the children of Israel instead of all the firstborn who open the womb among the children of Israel; and the Levites shall be mine,

KJVAnd I, behold, I have taken^H3947^(H8804) the Levites^H3881 from among^H8432 the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478 instead of all the firstborn^H1060 that openeth^H6363 the matrix^H7358 among the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478: therefore the Levites^H3881 shall be mine;

¹³ for all the firstborn are mine. On the day that I struck down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt I made holy to me all the firstborn in Israel, both man and animal. They shall be mine. I am Yahweh.”

¹⁴ Yahweh spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, saying,

KJVAnd the LORD^H3068 spake^H1696^(H8762) unto Moses^H4872 in the wilderness^H4057 of Sinai^H5514, saying^H559^(H8800),

¹⁵ “Count the children of Levi by their fathers’ houses, by their families. You shall count every male from a month old and upward.”

KJVNumber^H6485^(H8798) the children^H1121 of Levi^H3878 after the house^H1004 of their fathers^H1, by their families^H4940: every male^H2145 from a month^H2320 old^H1121 and upward^H4605 shalt thou number^H6485^(H8799) them.

¹⁶ Moses counted them according to Yahweh’s word, as he was commanded.

¹⁷ These were the sons of Levi by their names: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

KJVAnd these were the sons^H1121 of Levi^H3878 by their names^H8034; Gershon^H1648, and Kohath^H6955, and Merari^H4847.

¹⁸ These are the names of the sons of Gershon by their families: Libni and Shimei.
