¹The heads of the fathers’ households of the family of the children of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of the sons of Joseph, came near and spoke before Moses and before the princes, the heads of the fathers’ households of the children of Israel.

² They said, “Yahweh commanded my lord to give the land for inheritance by lot to the children of Israel. My lord was commanded by Yahweh to give the inheritance of Zelophehad our brother to his daughters.

KJVAnd they said^H559^(H8799), The LORD^H3068 commanded^H6680^(H8765) my lord^H113 to give^H5414^(H8800) the land^H776 for an inheritance^H5159 by lot^H1486 to the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478: and my lord^H113 was commanded^H6680^(H8795) by the LORD^H3068 to give^H5414^(H8800) the inheritance^H5159 of Zelophehad^H6765 our brother^H251 unto his daughters^H1323.

³ If they are married to any of the sons of the other tribes of the children of Israel, then their inheritance will be taken away from the inheritance of our fathers, and will be added to the inheritance of the tribe to which they shall belong. So it will be taken away from the lot of our inheritance.

KJVAnd if they be married^H802 to any^H259 of the sons^H1121 of the other tribes^H7626 of the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478, then shall their inheritance^H5159 be taken^H1639^(H8738) from the inheritance^H5159 of our fathers^H1, and shall be put^H3254^(H8738) to the inheritance^H5159 of the tribe^H4294 whereunto they are received: so shall it be taken^H1639^(H8735) from the lot^H1486 of our inheritance^H5159.

⁴ When the jubilee of the children of Israel comes, then their inheritance will be added to the inheritance of the tribe to which they shall belong. So their inheritance will be taken away from the inheritance of the tribe of our fathers.”

KJVAnd when the jubile^H3104 of the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478 shall be, then shall their inheritance^H5159 be put^H3254^(H8738) unto the inheritance^H5159 of the tribe^H4294 whereunto they are received: so shall their inheritance^H5159 be taken away^H1639^(H8735) from the inheritance^H5159 of the tribe^H4294 of our fathers^H1.

⁵ Moses commanded the children of Israel according to Yahweh’s word, saying, “The tribe of the sons of Joseph speak what is right.

KJVAnd Moses^H4872 commanded^H6680^(H8762) the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478 according to the word^H6310 of the LORD^H3068, saying^H559^(H8800), The tribe^H4294 of the sons^H1121 of Joseph^H3130 hath said^H1696^(H8802) well.

⁶ This is the thing which Yahweh commands concerning the daughters of Zelophehad, saying, ‘Let them be married to whom they think best, only they shall marry into the family of the tribe of their father.

KJVThis is the thing^H1697 which the LORD^H3068 doth command^H6680^(H8765) concerning the daughters^H1323 of Zelophehad^H6765, saying^H559^(H8800), Let them marry^H802 to whom they think^H5869 best^H2896; only to the family^H4940 of the tribe^H4294 of their father^H1 shall they marry^H802.

⁷ So shall no inheritance of the children of Israel move from tribe to tribe; for the children of Israel shall all keep the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers.

KJVSo shall not the inheritance^H5159 of the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478 remove^H5437^(H8735) from tribe^H4294 to tribe^H4294: for every one^H376 of the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478 shall keep^H1692^(H8799) himself to the inheritance^H5159 of the tribe^H4294 of his fathers^H1.

⁸ Every daughter who possesses an inheritance in any tribe of the children of Israel shall be wife to one of the family of the tribe of her father, that the children of Israel may each possess the inheritance of his fathers.

KJVAnd every daughter^H1323, that possesseth^H3423^(H8802) an inheritance^H5159 in any tribe^H4294 of the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478, shall be wife^H802 unto one^H259 of the family^H4940 of the tribe^H4294 of her father^H1, that the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478 may enjoy^H3423^(H8799) every man^H376 the inheritance^H5159 of his fathers^H1.

⁹ So shall no inheritance move from one tribe to another tribe; for the tribes of the children of Israel shall each keep his own inheritance.’”

KJVNeither shall the inheritance^H5159 remove^H5437^(H8735) from one tribe^H4294 to another^H312 tribe^H4294; but every one^H376 of the tribes^H4294 of the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478 shall keep^H1692^(H8799) himself to his own inheritance^H5159.

¹⁰ The daughters of Zelophehad did as Yahweh commanded Moses:

KJVEven as the LORD^H3068 commanded^H6680^(H8765) Moses^H4872, so did^H6213^(H8804) the daughters^H1323 of Zelophehad^H6765:

¹¹ for Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Noah, the daughters of Zelophehad, were married to their father’s brothers’ sons.

KJVFor Mahlah^H4244, Tirzah^H8656, and Hoglah^H2295, and Milcah^H4435, and Noah^H5270, the daughters^H1323 of Zelophehad^H6765, were married^H802 unto their father's^H1730 brothers' sons^H1121:

¹² They were married into the families of the sons of Manasseh the son of Joseph. Their inheritance remained in the tribe of the family of their father.

KJVAnd they were married^H802 into the families^H4940 of the sons^H1121 of Manasseh^H4519 the son^H1121 of Joseph^H3130, and their inheritance^H5159 remained in the tribe^H4294 of the family^H4940 of their father^H1.

¹³ These are the commandments and the ordinances which Yahweh commanded by Moses to the children of Israel in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho.

¹Yahweh spoke to Moses in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho, saying,

KJVAnd the LORD^H3068 spake^H1696^(H8762) unto Moses^H4872 in the plains^H6160 of Moab^H4124 by Jordan^H3383 near Jericho^H3405, saying^H559^(H8800),

² “Command the children of Israel to give to the Levites cities to dwell in out of their inheritance. You shall give pasture lands for the cities around them to the Levites.

KJVCommand^H6680^(H8761) the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478, that they give^H5414^(H8804) unto the Levites^H3881 of the inheritance^H5159 of their possession^H272 cities^H5892 to dwell in^H3427^(H8800); and ye shall give^H5414^(H8799) also unto the Levites^H3881 suburbs^H4054 for the cities^H5892 round about^H5439 them.

³ They shall have the cities to dwell in. Their pasture lands shall be for their livestock, and for their possessions, and for all their animals.

⁴ “The pasture lands of the cities, which you shall give to the Levites, shall be from the wall of the city and outward one thousand cubits around it.

⁵ You shall measure outside of the city for the east side two thousand cubits, and for the south side two thousand cubits, and for the west side two thousand cubits, and for the north side two thousand cubits, the city being in the middle. This shall be the pasture lands of their cities.

⁶ “The cities which you shall give to the Levites, they shall be the six cities of refuge, which you shall give for the man slayer to flee to. Besides them you shall give forty-two cities.

⁷ All the cities which you shall give to the Levites shall be forty-eight cities together with their pasture lands.

KJVSo all the cities^H5892 which ye shall give^H5414^(H8799) to the Levites^H3881 shall be forty^H705 and eight^H8083 cities^H5892: them shall ye give with their suburbs^H4054.

⁸ Concerning the cities which you shall give of the possession of the children of Israel, from the many you shall take many, and from the few you shall take few. Everyone according to his inheritance which he inherits shall give some of his cities to the Levites.”

⁹ Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

¹⁰ “Speak to the children of Israel, and tell them, ‘When you pass over the Jordan into the land of Canaan,

KJVSpeak^H1696^(H8761) unto the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478, and say^H559^(H8804) unto them, When ye be come over^H5674^(H8802) Jordan^H3383 into the land^H776 of Canaan^H3667;

¹¹ then you shall appoint for yourselves cities to be cities of refuge for you, that the man slayer who kills any person unwittingly may flee there.

¹² The cities shall be for your refuge from the avenger, that the man slayer not die until he stands before the congregation for judgment.

KJVAnd they shall be unto you cities^H5892 for refuge^H4733 from the avenger^H1350^(H8802); that the manslayer^H7523^(H8802) die^H4191^(H8799) not, until he stand^H5975^(H8800) before^H6440 the congregation^H5712 in judgment^H4941.

¹³ The cities which you shall give shall be for you six cities of refuge.

¹⁴ You shall give three cities beyond the Jordan, and you shall give three cities in the land of Canaan. They shall be cities of refuge.

¹⁵ These six cities shall be refuge for the children of Israel, for the stranger, and for the foreigner living among them, that everyone who kills any person unwittingly may flee there.

KJVThese six^H8337 cities^H5892 shall be a refuge^H4733, both for the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478, and for the stranger^H1616, and for the sojourner^H8453 among^H8432 them: that every one that killeth^H5221^(H8688) any person^H5315 unawares^H7684 may flee^H5127^(H8800) thither.

¹⁶ “‘But if he struck him with an instrument of iron, so that he died, he is a murderer. The murderer shall surely be put to death.

KJVAnd if he smite^H5221^(H8689) him with an instrument^H3627 of iron^H1270, so that he die^H4191^(H8799), he is a murderer^H7523^(H8802): the murderer^H7523^(H8802) shall surely^H4191^(H8800) be put to death^H4191^(H8714).

¹⁷ If he struck him with a stone in the hand, by which a man may die, and he died, he is a murderer. The murderer shall surely be put to death.

KJVAnd if he smite^H5221^(H8689) him with throwing^H3027 a stone^H68, wherewith he may die^H4191^(H8799), and he die^H4191^(H8799), he is a murderer^H7523^(H8802): the murderer^H7523^(H8802) shall surely^H4191^(H8800) be put to death^H4191^(H8714).

¹⁸ Or if he struck him with a weapon of wood in the hand, by which a man may die, and he died, he is a murderer. The murderer shall surely be put to death.

¹⁹ The avenger of blood shall himself put the murderer to death. When he meets him, he shall put him to death.

²⁰ If he shoved him out of hatred, or hurled something at him while lying in wait, so that he died,

²¹ or in hostility struck him with his hand, so that he died, he who struck him shall surely be put to death. He is a murderer. The avenger of blood shall put the murderer to death when he meets him.

²⁶ “‘But if the man slayer shall at any time go beyond the border of his city of refuge where he flees,

KJVBut if the slayer^H7523^(H8802) shall at any time^H3318^(H8800) come^H3318^(H8799) without the border^H1366 of the city^H5892 of his refuge^H4733, whither he was fled^H5127^(H8799);

²⁷ and the avenger of blood finds him outside of the border of his city of refuge, and the avenger of blood kills the man slayer, he shall not be guilty of blood,

KJVAnd the revenger^H1350^(H8802) of blood^H1818 find^H4672^(H8804) him without^H2351 the borders^H1366 of the city^H5892 of his refuge^H4733, and the revenger^H1350^(H8802) of blood^H1818 kill^H7523^(H8804) the slayer^H7523^(H8802); he shall not be guilty of blood^H1818:

²⁸ because he should have remained in his city of refuge until the death of the high priest. But after the death of the high priest, the man slayer shall return into the land of his possession.

²⁹ “‘These things shall be for a statute and ordinance to you throughout your generations in all your dwellings.

KJVSo these things shall be for a statute^H2708 of judgment^H4941 unto you throughout your generations^H1755 in all your dwellings^H4186.

³⁰ “‘Whoever kills any person, the murderer shall be slain based on the testimony of witnesses; but one witness shall not testify alone against any person so that he dies.

KJVWhoso killeth^H5221^(H8688) any person^H5315, the murderer^H7523^(H8802) shall be put to death^H7523^(H8799) by the mouth^H6310 of witnesses^H5707: but one^H259 witness^H5707 shall not testify^H6030^(H8799) against any person^H5315 to cause him to die^H4191^(H8800).

³¹ “‘Moreover you shall take no ransom for the life of a murderer who is guilty of death. He shall surely be put to death.

KJVMoreover ye shall take^H3947^(H8799) no satisfaction^H3724 for the life^H5315 of a murderer^H7523^(H8802), which is guilty^H7563 of death^H4191^(H8800): but he shall be surely^H4191^(H8800) put to death^H4191^(H8714).

³² “‘You shall take no ransom for him who has fled to his city of refuge, that he may come again to dwell in the land before the death of the priest.

KJVAnd ye shall take^H3947^(H8799) no satisfaction^H3724 for him that is fled^H5127^(H8800) to the city^H5892 of his refuge^H4733, that he should come again^H7725^(H8800) to dwell^H3427^(H8800) in the land^H776, until the death^H4194 of the priest^H3548.

³³ “‘So you shall not pollute the land where you live; for blood pollutes the land. No atonement can be made for the land for the blood that is shed in it, but by the blood of him who shed it.

³⁴ You shall not defile the land which you inhabit, where I dwell; for I, Yahweh, dwell among the children of Israel.’”
