¹These are the words which Moses spoke to all Israel beyond the Jordan in the wilderness, in the Arabah opposite Suf, between Paran, Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth, and Dizahab.

² It is eleven days’ journey from Horeb by the way of Mount Seir to Kadesh Barnea.

³ In the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, Moses spoke to the children of Israel according to all that Yahweh had given him in commandment to them,

⁴ after he had struck Sihon the king of the Amorites who lived in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan who lived in Ashtaroth, at Edrei.

⁵ Beyond the Jordan, in the land of Moab, Moses began to declare this law, saying,

⁶ “Yahweh our God spoke to us in Horeb, saying, ‘You have lived long enough at this mountain.

⁷ Turn, and take your journey, and go to the hill country of the Amorites and to all the places near there: in the Arabah, in the hill country, in the lowland, in the South, by the seashore, in the land of the Canaanites, and in Lebanon as far as the great river, the river Euphrates.

⁹ I spoke to you at that time, saying, “I am not able to bear you myself alone.

¹⁰ Yahweh your God has multiplied you, and behold, you are today as the stars of the sky for multitude.

KJVThe LORD^H3068 your God^H430 hath multiplied^H7235^(H8689) you, and, behold, ye are this day^H3117 as the stars^H3556 of heaven^H8064 for multitude^H7230.

¹¹ May Yahweh, the God of your fathers, make you a thousand times as many as you are and bless you, as he has promised you!

¹² How can I myself alone bear your problems, your burdens, and your strife?

¹³ Take wise men of understanding who are respected among your tribes, and I will make them heads over you.”

¹⁴ You answered me, and said, “The thing which you have spoken is good to do.”

¹⁵ So I took the heads of your tribes, wise and respected men, and made them heads over you, captains of thousands, captains of hundreds, captains of fifties, captains of tens, and officers, according to your tribes.

¹⁶ I commanded your judges at that time, saying, “Hear cases between your brothers and judge righteously between a man and his brother, and the foreigner who is living with him.

KJVAnd I charged^H6680^(H8762) your judges^H8199^(H8802) at that time^H6256, saying^H559^(H8800), Hear^H8085^(H8800) the causes between your brethren^H251, and judge^H8199^(H8804) righteously^H6664 between every man^H376 and his brother^H251, and the stranger^H1616 that is with him.

¹⁷ You shall not show partiality in judgment; you shall hear the small and the great alike. You shall not be afraid of the face of man, for the judgment is God’s. The case that is too hard for you, you shall bring to me, and I will hear it.”

¹⁸ I commanded you at that time all the things which you should do.

¹⁹ We traveled from Horeb and went through all that great and terrible wilderness which you saw, by the way to the hill country of the Amorites, as Yahweh our God commanded us; and we came to Kadesh Barnea.

²⁰ I said to you, “You have come to the hill country of the Amorites, which Yahweh our God gives to us.

KJVAnd I said^H559^(H8799) unto you, Ye are come^H935^(H8804) unto the mountain^H2022 of the Amorites^H567, which the LORD^H3068 our God^H430 doth give^H5414^(H8802) unto us.

²¹ Behold, Yahweh your God has set the land before you. Go up, take possession, as Yahweh the God of your fathers has spoken to you. Don’t be afraid, neither be dismayed.”

²² You came near to me, everyone of you, and said, “Let’s send men before us, that they may search the land for us, and bring back to us word of the way by which we must go up, and the cities to which we shall come.”

²³ The thing pleased me well. I took twelve of your men, one man for every tribe.

²⁴ They turned and went up into the hill country, and came to the valley of Eshcol, and spied it out.

²⁵ They took some of the fruit of the land in their hands and brought it down to us, and brought us word again, and said, “It is a good land which Yahweh our God gives to us.”

²⁶ Yet you wouldn’t go up, but rebelled against the commandment of Yahweh your God.

KJVNotwithstanding ye would^H14^(H8804) not go up^H5927^(H8800), but rebelled^H4784^(H8686) against the commandment^H6310 of the LORD^H3068 your God^H430:

²⁷ You murmured in your tents, and said, “Because Yahweh hated us, he has brought us out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites to destroy us.

KJVAnd ye murmured^H7279^(H8735) in your tents^H168, and said^H559^(H8799), Because the LORD^H3068 hated^H8135 us, he hath brought us forth^H3318^(H8689) out of the land^H776 of Egypt^H4714, to deliver^H5414^(H8800) us into the hand^H3027 of the Amorites^H567, to destroy^H8045^(H8687) us.

²⁸ Where are we going up? Our brothers have made our heart melt, saying, ‘The people are greater and taller than we. The cities are great and fortified up to the sky. Moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakim there!’”

²⁹ Then I said to you, “Don’t be terrified. Don’t be afraid of them.

KJVThen I said^H559^(H8799) unto you, Dread^H6206^(H8799) not, neither be afraid^H3372^(H8799) of them.

³⁰ Yahweh your God, who goes before you, he will fight for you, according to all that he did for you in Egypt before your eyes,

KJVThe LORD^H3068 your God^H430 which goeth^H1980^(H8802) before^H6440 you, he shall fight^H3898^(H8735) for you, according to all that he did^H6213^(H8804) for you in Egypt^H4714 before your eyes^H5869;

³¹ and in the wilderness where you have seen how that Yahweh your God carried you, as a man carries his son, in all the way that you went, until you came to this place.”

KJVAnd in the wilderness^H4057, where thou hast seen^H7200^(H8804) how that the LORD^H3068 thy God^H430 bare^H5375^(H8804) thee, as a man^H376 doth bear^H5375^(H8799) his son^H1121, in all the way^H1870 that ye went^H1980^(H8804), until ye came^H935^(H8800) into this place^H4725.

³² Yet in this thing you didn’t believe Yahweh your God,

³³ who went before you on the way, to seek out a place for you to pitch your tents in: in fire by night, to show you by what way you should go, and in the cloud by day.

KJVWho went^H1980^(H8802) in the way^H1870 before^H6440 you, to search you out^H8446^(H8800) a place^H4725 to pitch your tents^H2583^(H8800) in, in fire^H784 by night^H3915, to shew^H7200^(H8687) you by what way^H1870 ye should go^H3212^(H8799), and in a cloud^H6051 by day^H3119.

³⁴ Yahweh heard the voice of your words and was angry, and swore, saying,

KJVAnd the LORD^H3068 heard^H8085^(H8799) the voice^H6963 of your words^H1697, and was wroth^H7107^(H8799), and sware^H7650^(H8735), saying^H559^(H8800),

³⁵ “Surely not one of these men of this evil generation shall see the good land which I swore to give to your fathers,

KJVSurely there shall not one^H376 of these men^H582 of this evil^H7451 generation^H1755 see^H7200^(H8799) that good^H2896 land^H776, which I sware^H7650^(H8738) to give^H5414^(H8800) unto your fathers^H1,

³⁶ except Caleb the son of Jephunneh. He shall see it. I will give the land that he has trodden on to him and to his children, because he has wholly followed Yahweh.”

³⁷ Also Yahweh was angry with me for your sakes, saying, “You also shall not go in there.

³⁸ Joshua the son of Nun, who stands before you, shall go in there. Encourage him, for he shall cause Israel to inherit it.

KJVBut Joshua^H3091 the son^H1121 of Nun^H5126, which standeth^H5975^(H8802) before^H6440 thee, he shall go in^H935^(H8799) thither: encourage^H2388^(H8761) him: for he shall cause Israel^H3478 to inherit^H5157^(H8686) it.

³⁹ Moreover your little ones, whom you said would be captured or killed, your children, who today have no knowledge of good or evil, shall go in there. I will give it to them, and they shall possess it.

⁴⁰ But as for you, turn, and take your journey into the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea.”

⁴¹ Then you answered and said to me, “We have sinned against Yahweh. We will go up and fight, according to all that Yahweh our God commanded us.” Every man of you put on his weapons of war, and presumed to go up into the hill country.

⁴² Yahweh said to me, “Tell them, ‘Don’t go up and don’t fight; for I am not among you, lest you be struck before your enemies.’”

KJVAnd the LORD^H3068 said^H559^(H8799) unto me, Say^H559^(H8798) unto them, Go not up^H5927^(H8799), neither fight^H3898^(H8735); for I am not among^H7130 you; lest ye be smitten^H5062^(H8735) before^H6440 your enemies^H341^(H8802).

⁴³ So I spoke to you, and you didn’t listen; but you rebelled against the commandment of Yahweh, and were presumptuous, and went up into the hill country.

KJVSo I spake^H1696^(H8762) unto you; and ye would not hear^H8085^(H8804), but rebelled^H4784^(H8686) against the commandment^H6310 of the LORD^H3068, and went^H5927 presumptuously^H2102^(H8686) up^H5927^(H8799) into the hill^H2022.

⁴⁴ The Amorites, who lived in that hill country, came out against you and chased you as bees do, and beat you down in Seir, even to Hormah.

KJVAnd the Amorites^H567, which dwelt^H3427^(H8802) in that mountain^H2022, came out^H3318^(H8799) against^H7125^(H8800) you, and chased^H7291^(H8799) you, as bees^H1682 do^H6213^(H8799), and destroyed^H3807^(H8686) you in Seir^H8165, even unto Hormah^H2767.

⁴⁵ You returned and wept before Yahweh, but Yahweh didn’t listen to your voice, nor turn his ear to you.

KJVAnd ye returned^H7725^(H8799) and wept^H1058^(H8799) before^H6440 the LORD^H3068; but the LORD^H3068 would not hearken^H8085^(H8804) to your voice^H6963, nor give ear^H238^(H8689) unto you.

⁴⁶ So you stayed in Kadesh many days, according to the days that you remained.

KJVSo ye abode^H3427^(H8799) in Kadesh^H6946 many^H7227 days^H3117, according unto the days^H3117 that ye abode^H3427^(H8804) there.

¹The heads of the fathers’ households of the family of the children of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of the sons of Joseph, came near and spoke before Moses and before the princes, the heads of the fathers’ households of the children of Israel.

² They said, “Yahweh commanded my lord to give the land for inheritance by lot to the children of Israel. My lord was commanded by Yahweh to give the inheritance of Zelophehad our brother to his daughters.

KJVAnd they said^H559^(H8799), The LORD^H3068 commanded^H6680^(H8765) my lord^H113 to give^H5414^(H8800) the land^H776 for an inheritance^H5159 by lot^H1486 to the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478: and my lord^H113 was commanded^H6680^(H8795) by the LORD^H3068 to give^H5414^(H8800) the inheritance^H5159 of Zelophehad^H6765 our brother^H251 unto his daughters^H1323.

³ If they are married to any of the sons of the other tribes of the children of Israel, then their inheritance will be taken away from the inheritance of our fathers, and will be added to the inheritance of the tribe to which they shall belong. So it will be taken away from the lot of our inheritance.

KJVAnd if they be married^H802 to any^H259 of the sons^H1121 of the other tribes^H7626 of the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478, then shall their inheritance^H5159 be taken^H1639^(H8738) from the inheritance^H5159 of our fathers^H1, and shall be put^H3254^(H8738) to the inheritance^H5159 of the tribe^H4294 whereunto they are received: so shall it be taken^H1639^(H8735) from the lot^H1486 of our inheritance^H5159.

⁴ When the jubilee of the children of Israel comes, then their inheritance will be added to the inheritance of the tribe to which they shall belong. So their inheritance will be taken away from the inheritance of the tribe of our fathers.”

KJVAnd when the jubile^H3104 of the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478 shall be, then shall their inheritance^H5159 be put^H3254^(H8738) unto the inheritance^H5159 of the tribe^H4294 whereunto they are received: so shall their inheritance^H5159 be taken away^H1639^(H8735) from the inheritance^H5159 of the tribe^H4294 of our fathers^H1.

⁵ Moses commanded the children of Israel according to Yahweh’s word, saying, “The tribe of the sons of Joseph speak what is right.

KJVAnd Moses^H4872 commanded^H6680^(H8762) the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478 according to the word^H6310 of the LORD^H3068, saying^H559^(H8800), The tribe^H4294 of the sons^H1121 of Joseph^H3130 hath said^H1696^(H8802) well.

⁶ This is the thing which Yahweh commands concerning the daughters of Zelophehad, saying, ‘Let them be married to whom they think best, only they shall marry into the family of the tribe of their father.

KJVThis is the thing^H1697 which the LORD^H3068 doth command^H6680^(H8765) concerning the daughters^H1323 of Zelophehad^H6765, saying^H559^(H8800), Let them marry^H802 to whom they think^H5869 best^H2896; only to the family^H4940 of the tribe^H4294 of their father^H1 shall they marry^H802.

⁷ So shall no inheritance of the children of Israel move from tribe to tribe; for the children of Israel shall all keep the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers.

KJVSo shall not the inheritance^H5159 of the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478 remove^H5437^(H8735) from tribe^H4294 to tribe^H4294: for every one^H376 of the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478 shall keep^H1692^(H8799) himself to the inheritance^H5159 of the tribe^H4294 of his fathers^H1.

⁸ Every daughter who possesses an inheritance in any tribe of the children of Israel shall be wife to one of the family of the tribe of her father, that the children of Israel may each possess the inheritance of his fathers.

KJVAnd every daughter^H1323, that possesseth^H3423^(H8802) an inheritance^H5159 in any tribe^H4294 of the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478, shall be wife^H802 unto one^H259 of the family^H4940 of the tribe^H4294 of her father^H1, that the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478 may enjoy^H3423^(H8799) every man^H376 the inheritance^H5159 of his fathers^H1.

⁹ So shall no inheritance move from one tribe to another tribe; for the tribes of the children of Israel shall each keep his own inheritance.’”

KJVNeither shall the inheritance^H5159 remove^H5437^(H8735) from one tribe^H4294 to another^H312 tribe^H4294; but every one^H376 of the tribes^H4294 of the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478 shall keep^H1692^(H8799) himself to his own inheritance^H5159.

¹⁰ The daughters of Zelophehad did as Yahweh commanded Moses:

KJVEven as the LORD^H3068 commanded^H6680^(H8765) Moses^H4872, so did^H6213^(H8804) the daughters^H1323 of Zelophehad^H6765:

¹¹ for Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Noah, the daughters of Zelophehad, were married to their father’s brothers’ sons.

KJVFor Mahlah^H4244, Tirzah^H8656, and Hoglah^H2295, and Milcah^H4435, and Noah^H5270, the daughters^H1323 of Zelophehad^H6765, were married^H802 unto their father's^H1730 brothers' sons^H1121:

¹² They were married into the families of the sons of Manasseh the son of Joseph. Their inheritance remained in the tribe of the family of their father.

KJVAnd they were married^H802 into the families^H4940 of the sons^H1121 of Manasseh^H4519 the son^H1121 of Joseph^H3130, and their inheritance^H5159 remained in the tribe^H4294 of the family^H4940 of their father^H1.

¹³ These are the commandments and the ordinances which Yahweh commanded by Moses to the children of Israel in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho.
