Luke 9
WEB·Luke 9
1He called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases.
KJVThenG1161 he calledG4779 hisG846 twelveG1427 disciplesG3101 togetherG4779(G5671), andG2532 gaveG1325(G5656) themG846 powerG1411 and authorityG1849 overG1909 allG3956 devilsG1140, andG2532 to cureG2323(G5721) diseasesG3554.
2 He sent them out to preach God’s Kingdom and to heal the sick.
KJVAndG2532 he sentG649(G5656) themG846 to preachG2784(G5721) the kingdomG932 of GodG2316, andG2532 to healG2390(G5738) the sickG770(G5723).
3 He said to them, “Take nothing for your journey—no staffs, nor wallet, nor bread, nor money. Don’t have two tunics each.
KJVAndG2532 he saidG2036(G5627) untoG4314 themG846, TakeG142(G5720) nothingG3367 forG1519 your journeyG3598, neitherG3383 stavesG4464, norG3383 scripG4082, neitherG3383 breadG740, neitherG3383 moneyG694; neitherG3383 haveG2192(G5721) twoG1417 coatsG5509 apieceG303.
4 Into whatever house you enter, stay there, and depart from there.
KJVAndG2532 whatsoeverG3739G302 houseG3614 ye enterG1525(G5632) intoG1519, thereG1563 abideG3306(G5720), andG2532 thenceG1564 departG1831(G5737).
5 As many as don’t receive you, when you depart from that city, shake off even the dust from your feet for a testimony against them.”
KJVAndG2532 whosoeverG3745G302 willG1209 notG3361 receiveG1209(G5667) youG5209, when ye goG1831(G5740) out ofG575 thatG1565 cityG4172, shake offG660(G5657) the veryG2532 dustG2868 fromG575 yourG5216 feetG4228 forG1519 a testimonyG3142 againstG1909 themG846.
6 They departed and went throughout the villages, preaching the Good News and healing everywhere.
KJVAndG1161 they departedG1831(G5740), and wentG1330(G5711) throughG2596 the townsG2968, preaching the gospelG2097(G5734), andG2532 healingG2323(G5723) every whereG3837.
7 Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by him; and he was very perplexed, because it was said by some that John had risen from the dead,
KJVNowG1161 HerodG2264 the tetrarchG5076 heardG191(G5656) of allG3956 that was doneG1096(G5740) byG5259 himG846: andG2532 he was perplexedG1280(G5707), becauseG1223 that it was saidG3004(G5745) ofG5259 someG5100, thatG3754 JohnG2491 was risenG1453(G5769) fromG1537 the deadG3498;
8 and by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the old prophets had risen again.
KJVAndG1161 ofG5259 someG5100, thatG3754 EliasG2243 had appearedG5316(G5648); andG1161 of othersG243, thatG3754 oneG1520 of the oldG744 prophetsG4396 was risen againG450(G5627).
9 Herod said, “I beheaded John, but who is this about whom I hear such things?” He sought to see him.
KJVAndG2532 HerodG2264 saidG2036(G5627), JohnG2491 haveG607 IG1473 beheadedG607(G5656): butG1161 whoG5101 isG2076(G5748) thisG3778, ofG4012 whomG3739 IG1473 hearG191(G5719) such thingsG5108? AndG2532 he desiredG2212(G5707) to seeG1492(G5629) himG846.
10 The apostles, when they had returned, told him what things they had done. He took them and withdrew apart to a desert region of a city called Bethsaida.
KJVAndG2532 the apostlesG652, when they were returnedG5290(G5660), toldG1334(G5662) himG846 all thatG3745 they had doneG4160(G5656). AndG2532 he tookG3880(G5631) themG846, and went asideG5298(G5656) privatelyG2596G2398 intoG1519 a desertG2048 placeG5117 belonging to the cityG4172 calledG2564(G5746) BethsaidaG966.
11 But the multitudes, perceiving it, followed him. He welcomed them, spoke to them of God’s Kingdom, and he cured those who needed healing.
KJVAndG1161 the peopleG3793, when they knewG1097(G5631) it, followedG190(G5656) himG846: andG2532 he receivedG1209(G5666) themG846, and spakeG2980(G5707) unto themG846 ofG4012 the kingdomG932 of GodG2316, andG2532 healedG2390(G5711) them that hadG2192(G5723) needG5532 of healingG2322.
12 The day began to wear away; and the twelve came and said to him, “Send the multitude away, that they may go into the surrounding villages and farms and lodge and get food, for we are here in a deserted place.”
KJVAndG1161 when the dayG2250 beganG756(G5662) to wear awayG2827(G5721), thenG1161 cameG4334(G5631) the twelveG1427, and saidG2036(G5632) unto himG846, SendG630 the multitudeG3793 awayG630(G5657), thatG2443 they may goG565(G5631) intoG1519 the townsG2968 andG2532 countryG68 round aboutG2945, and lodgeG2647(G5661), andG2532 getG2147(G5627) victualsG1979: forG3754 we areG2070(G5748) hereG5602 inG1722 a desertG2048 placeG5117.
13 But he said to them, “You give them something to eat.” They said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish, unless we should go and buy food for all these people.”
KJVButG1161 he saidG2036(G5627) untoG4314 themG846, GiveG1325(G5628) yeG5210 themG846 to eatG5315(G5629). AndG1161 they saidG2036(G5627), WeG2254 have noG3756G1526(G5748) moreG4119 butG2228 fiveG4002 loavesG740 andG2532 twoG1417 fishesG2486; exceptG1509 weG2249 should goG4198(G5679) and buyG59(G5661) meatG1033 forG1519 allG3956 thisG5126 peopleG2992.
14 For they were about five thousand men. He said to his disciples, “Make them sit down in groups of about fifty each.”
KJVForG1063 they wereG2258(G5713) aboutG5616 five thousandG4000 menG435. AndG1161 he saidG2036(G5627) toG4314 hisG846 disciplesG3101, MakeG2625 themG846 sit downG2625(G5657) byG303 fiftiesG4004 in a companyG2828.
15 They did so, and made them all sit down.
KJVAndG2532 they didG4160(G5656) soG3779, andG2532 madeG347 them allG537 sit downG347(G5656).
16 He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to the sky, he blessed them, broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the multitude.
KJVThenG1161 he tookG2983(G5631) the fiveG4002 loavesG740 andG2532 the twoG1417 fishesG2486, and looking upG308(G5660) toG1519 heavenG3772, he blessedG2127(G5656) themG846, andG2532 brakeG2622(G5656), andG2532 gaveG1325(G5707) to the disciplesG3101 to set beforeG3908(G5683) the multitudeG3793.
17 They ate and were all filled. They gathered up twelve baskets of broken pieces that were left over.
KJVAndG2532 they did eatG5315(G5627), andG2532 wereG5526 allG3956 filledG5526(G5681): andG2532 there was taken upG142(G5681) of fragmentsG2801 that remainedG4052(G5660) to themG846 twelveG1427 basketsG2894.
18 As he was praying alone, the disciples were near him, and he asked them, “Who do the multitudes say that I am?”
KJVAndG2532 it came to passG1096(G5633), asG1722 he wasG1511(G5750) aloneG2651 prayingG4336(G5740), hisG846 disciplesG3101 were withG4895(G5713) himG846: andG2532 he askedG1905(G5656) themG846, sayingG3004(G5723), WhomG5101 sayG3004(G5719) the peopleG3793 that IG3165 amG1511(G5750)?
19 They answered, “‘John the Baptizer,’ but others say, ‘Elijah,’ and others, that one of the old prophets has risen again.”
KJVTheyG1161 answeringG611(G5679) saidG2036(G5627), JohnG2491 the BaptistG910; butG1161 someG243 say, EliasG2243; andG1161 othersG243 say, thatG3754 oneG5100 of the oldG744 prophetsG4396 is risen againG450(G5627).
20 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered, “The Christ of God.”
KJVG1161 He saidG2036(G5627) unto themG846, ButG1161 whomG5101 sayG3004(G5719) yeG5210 that IG3165 amG1511(G5750)?G1161 PeterG4074 answeringG611(G5679) saidG2036(G5627), The ChristG5547 of GodG2316.
21 But he warned them and commanded them to tell this to no one,
KJVAndG1161 he straitly chargedG2008(G5660) themG846, and commandedG3853(G5656) them to tellG2036(G5629) no manG3367 that thingG5124;
22 saying, “The Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and the third day be raised up.”
KJVSayingG2036(G5631),G3754 The SonG5207 of manG444 mustG1163(G5748) sufferG3958(G5629) many thingsG4183, andG2532 be rejectedG593(G5683) ofG575 the eldersG4245 andG2532 chief priestsG749 andG2532 scribesG1122, andG2532 be slainG615(G5683), andG2532 be raisedG1453(G5683) the thirdG5154 dayG2250.
23 He said to all, “If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.
KJVAndG1161 he saidG3004(G5707) toG4314 them allG3956, If any manG1536 willG2309(G5719) comeG2064(G5629) afterG3694 meG3450, let him denyG533(G5663) himselfG1438, andG2532 take upG142(G5657) hisG846 crossG4716 dailyG2250G2596, andG2532 followG190(G5720) meG3427.
24 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever will lose his life for my sake will save it.
KJVForG1063 whosoeverG3739G302 willG2309(G5725) saveG4982(G5658) hisG846 lifeG5590 shall loseG622(G5692) itG846: butG1161 whosoeverG3739G302 will loseG622(G5661) hisG846 lifeG5590 for myG1700 sakeG1752, the sameG3778 shall saveG4982(G5692) itG846.
25 For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses or forfeits his own self?
KJVForG1063 whatG5101 isG5623 a manG444 advantagedG5623(G5743), if he gainG2770(G5660) the wholeG3650 worldG2889, andG1161 loseG622(G5660) himselfG1438, orG2228 be cast awayG2210(G5685)?
26 For whoever will be ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed when he comes in his glory, and the glory of the Father, and of the holy angels.
KJVForG1063 whosoeverG3739G302 shall be ashamedG1870(G5680) of meG3165 andG2532 of myG1699 wordsG3056, of himG5126 shallG1870 the SonG5207 of manG444 be ashamedG1870(G5700), whenG3752 he shall comeG2064(G5632) inG1722 his ownG846 gloryG1391, andG2532 in his Father'sG3962, andG2532 of the holyG40 angelsG32.
27 But I tell you the truth: There are some of those who stand here who will in no way taste of death until they see God’s Kingdom.”
KJVButG1161 I tellG3004(G5719) youG5213 of a truthG230, there beG1526(G5748) someG5100 standingG2476(G5761) hereG5602, whichG3739 shallG1089 notG3364 tasteG1089(G5695) of deathG2288, tillG2193G302 they seeG1492(G5632) the kingdomG932 of GodG2316.
28 About eight days after these sayings, he took with him Peter, John, and James, and went up onto the mountain to pray.
KJVAndG1161 it came to passG1096(G5633) aboutG5616 an eightG3638 daysG2250 afterG3326 theseG5128 sayingsG3056,G2532 he tookG3880(G5631) PeterG4074 andG2532 JohnG2491 andG2532 JamesG2385, and went upG305(G5627) intoG1519 a mountainG3735 to prayG4336(G5664).
29 As he was praying, the appearance of his face was altered, and his clothing became white and dazzling.
KJVAndG2532 asG1722 heG846 prayedG4336(G5738), the fashionG1491 of hisG846 countenanceG4383 wasG1096(G5633) alteredG2087, andG2532 hisG846 raimentG2441 was whiteG3022 and glisteringG1823(G5723).
30 Behold, two men were talking with him, who were Moses and Elijah,
KJVAndG2532, beholdG2400(G5628), there talkedG4814(G5707) with himG846 twoG1417 menG435, whichG3748 wereG2258(G5713) MosesG3475 andG2532 EliasG2243:
31 who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.
KJVWhoG3739 appearedG3700(G5685) inG1722 gloryG1391, and spakeG3004(G5707) of hisG846 deceaseG1841 whichG3739 he shouldG3195(G5707) accomplishG4137(G5721) atG1722 JerusalemG2419.
32 Now Peter and those who were with him were heavy with sleep, but when they were fully awake, they saw his glory, and the two men who stood with him.
KJVButG1161 PeterG4074 andG2532 they that were withG4862 himG846 wereG2258(G5713) heavyG916(G5772) with sleepG5258: andG1161 when they were awakeG1235(G5660), they sawG1492(G5627) hisG846 gloryG1391, andG2532 the twoG1417 menG435 that stood withG4921(G5761) himG846.
33 As they were parting from him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let’s make three tents: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah,” not knowing what he said.
KJVAndG2532 it came to passG1096(G5633), asG1722 theyG846 departedG1316(G5738) fromG575 himG846, PeterG4074 saidG2036(G5627) untoG4314 JesusG2424, MasterG1988, it isG2076(G5748) goodG2570 for usG2248 to beG1511(G5750) hereG5602: andG2532 let us makeG4160(G5661) threeG5140 tabernaclesG4633; one forG3391 theeG4671, andG2532 one forG3391 MosesG3475, andG2532 one forG3391 EliasG2243: notG3361 knowingG1492(G5761) whatG3739 he saidG3004(G5719).
34 While he said these things, a cloud came and overshadowed them, and they were afraid as they entered into the cloud.
KJVWhileG1161 heG846 thusG5023 spakeG3004(G5723), there cameG1096(G5633) a cloudG3507, andG2532 overshadowedG1982(G5656) themG846: andG1161 they fearedG5399(G5675) asG1722 theyG1565 enteredG1525(G5629) intoG1519 the cloudG3507.
35 A voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him!”
KJVAndG2532 there cameG1096(G5633) a voiceG5456 out ofG1537 the cloudG3507, sayingG3004(G5723), ThisG3778 isG2076(G5748) myG3450 belovedG27 SonG5207: hearG191(G5720) himG846.
36 When the voice came, Jesus was found alone. They were silent, and told no one in those days any of the things which they had seen.
KJVAndG2532 when the voiceG5456 was pastG1722G1096(G5635), JesusG2424 was foundG2147(G5681) aloneG3441. AndG2532 theyG846 kept it closeG4601(G5656), andG2532 toldG518(G5656) no manG3762 inG1722 thoseG1565 daysG2250 anyG3762 of those things whichG3739 they had seenG3708(G5758).
37 On the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a great multitude met him.
KJVAndG1161 it came to passG1096(G5633), that onG1722 the nextG1836 dayG2250, when theyG846 were come downG2718(G5631) fromG575 the hillG3735, muchG4183 peopleG3793 metG4876(G5656) himG846.
38 Behold, a man from the crowd called out, saying, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only born child.
KJVAnd,G2532 beholdG2400(G5628), a manG435 ofG575 the companyG3793 cried outG310(G5656), sayingG3004(G5723), MasterG1320, I beseechG1189(G5736) theeG4675, lookG1914(G5657) uponG1909 myG3450 sonG5207: forG3754 he isG2076(G5748) mineG3427 only childG3439.
39 Behold, a spirit takes him, he suddenly cries out, and it convulses him so that he foams; and it hardly departs from him, bruising him severely.
KJVAndG2532, loG2400(G5628), a spiritG4151 takethG2983(G5719) himG846, andG2532 he suddenlyG1810 crieth outG2896(G5719); andG2532 it tearethG4682(G5719) himG846 that he foamethG876 againG3326, andG2532 bruisingG4937(G5723) himG846 hardlyG3425 departethG672(G5719) fromG575 himG846.
40 I begged your disciples to cast it out, and they couldn’t.”
KJVAndG2532 I besoughtG1189(G5681) thyG4675 disciplesG3101 toG2443 castG1544 himG846 outG1544(G5725); andG2532 they couldG1410(G5675) notG3756.
41 Jesus answered, “Faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here.”
KJVAndG1161 JesusG2424 answeringG611(G5679) saidG2036(G5627), OG5599 faithlessG571 andG2532 perverseG1294(G5772) generationG1074, howG2193 longG4219 shall I beG2071(G5704) withG4314 youG5209, andG2532 sufferG430(G5695) youG5216? BringG4317(G5628) thyG4675 sonG5207 hitherG5602.
42 While he was still coming, the demon threw him down and convulsed him violently. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the boy, and gave him back to his father.
KJVAndG1161 as heG846 wasG4334 yetG2089 a comingG4334(G5740), the devilG1140 threwG4486 himG846 downG4486(G5656), andG2532 tareG4952(G5656) him. AndG1161 JesusG2424 rebukedG2008(G5656) the uncleanG169 spiritG4151, andG2532 healedG2390(G5662) the childG3816, andG2532 deliveredG591 himG846 againG591(G5656) to hisG846 fatherG3962.
43 They were all astonished at the majesty of God. But while all were marveling at all the things which Jesus did, he said to his disciples,
KJVAndG1161 they wereG1605 allG3956 amazedG1605(G5712) atG1909 the mighty powerG3168 of GodG2316. ButG1161 while they wonderedG2296(G5723) every oneG3956 atG1909 all thingsG3956 whichG3739 JesusG2424 didG4160(G5656), he saidG2036(G5627) untoG4314 hisG846 disciplesG3101,
44 “Let these words sink into your ears, for the Son of Man will be delivered up into the hands of men.”
KJVLet theseG5128 sayingsG3056 sink downG5087(G5640) intoG1519 yourG5210G5216 earsG3775: forG1063 the SonG5207 of manG444 shall beG3195(G5719) deliveredG3860(G5745) intoG1519 the handsG5495 of menG444.
45 But they didn’t understand this saying. It was concealed from them, that they should not perceive it, and they were afraid to ask him about this saying.
KJVButG1161 they understood notG50(G5707) thisG5124 sayingG4487, andG2532 it wasG2258(G5713) hidG3871(G5772) fromG575 themG846, thatG3363 they perceivedG143(G5638) itG846 notG3363: andG2532 they fearedG5399(G5711) to askG2065(G5658) himG846 ofG4012 thatG5127 sayingG4487.
46 An argument arose among them about which of them was the greatest.

49 John answered, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we forbade him, because he doesn’t follow with us.”
KJVAndG1161 JohnG2491 answeredG611(G5679) and saidG2036(G5627), MasterG1988, we sawG1492(G5627) oneG5100 casting outG1544(G5723) devilsG1140 inG1909 thyG4675 nameG3686; andG2532 we forbadG2967(G5656) himG846, becauseG3754 he followethG190(G5719) notG3756 withG3326 usG2257.
50 Jesus said to him, “Don’t forbid him, for he who is not against us is for us.”

54 When his disciples, James and John, saw this, they said, “Lord, do you want us to command fire to come down from the sky and destroy them, just as Elijah did?”
KJVAndG1161 when hisG846 disciplesG3101 JamesG2385 andG2532 JohnG2491 sawG1492(G5631) this, they saidG2036(G5627), LordG2962, wilt thouG2309(G5719) that we commandG2036(G5632) fireG4442 to come downG2597(G5629) fromG575 heavenG3772, andG2532 consumeG355(G5658) themG846, evenG2532 asG5613 EliasG2243 didG4160(G5656)?
