Galatians 4

WEB·Galatians 4
1But I say that so long as the heir is a child, he is no different from a bondservant, though he is lord of all,
KJVNowG1161 I sayG3004(G5719), That the heirG2818, as long asG1909G3745G5550 he isG2076(G5748) a childG3516, differethG1308(G5719) nothingG3762 from a servantG1401, though he beG5607(G5752) lordG2962 of allG3956;
2 but is under guardians and stewards until the day appointed by the father.
KJVButG235 isG2076(G5748) underG5259 tutorsG2012 andG2532 governorsG3623 untilG891 the time appointedG4287 of the fatherG3962.
3 So we also, when we were children, were held in bondage under the elemental principles of the world.
KJVEvenG2532 soG3779 weG2249, whenG3753 we wereG2258(G5713) childrenG3516, wereG2258(G5713) in bondageG1402(G5772) underG5259 the elementsG4747 of the worldG2889:
4 But when the fullness of the time came, God sent out his Son, born to a woman, born under the law,
KJVButG1161 whenG3753 the fulnessG4138 of the timeG5550 was comeG2064(G5627), GodG2316 sent forthG1821(G5656) hisG846 SonG5207, madeG1096(G5637) ofG1537 a womanG1135, madeG1096(G5637) underG5259 the lawG3551,
5 that he might redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as children.
KJVToG2443 redeemG1805(G5661) them that were underG5259 the lawG3551, thatG2443 we might receiveG618(G5632) the adoption of sonsG5206.
6 And because you are children, God sent out the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, “Abba, Father!”
KJVAndG1161 becauseG3754 ye areG2075(G5748) sonsG5207, GodG2316 hath sent forthG1821(G5656) the SpiritG4151 of hisG846 SonG5207 intoG1519 yourG5216 heartsG2588, cryingG2896(G5723), AbbaG5, FatherG3962.
7 So you are no longer a bondservant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.
KJVWhereforeG5620 thou artG1488(G5748) no moreG3765 a servantG1401, butG235 a sonG5207; andG1161 ifG1487 a sonG5207, thenG2532 an heirG2818 of GodG2316 throughG1223 ChristG5547.
8 However at that time, not knowing God, you were in bondage to those who by nature are not gods.
KJVHowbeitG235 thenG5119G3303, when ye knewG1492(G5761) notG3756 GodG2316, ye did serviceG1398(G5656) unto them which by natureG5449 areG5607(G5752) noG3361 godsG2316.
9 But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, why do you turn back again to the weak and miserable elemental principles, to which you desire to be in bondage all over again?
KJVButG1161 nowG3568, after that ye have knownG1097(G5631) GodG2316, orG1161 ratherG3123 are knownG1097(G5685) ofG5259 GodG2316, howG4459 turn yeG1994(G5719) againG3825 toG1909 the weakG772 andG2532 beggarlyG4434 elementsG4747, whereuntoG3739 ye desireG2309(G5719) againG3825G509 to be in bondageG1398(G5721)?
10 You observe days, months, seasons, and years.
KJVYe observeG3906(G5731) daysG2250, andG2532 monthsG3376, andG2532 timesG2540, andG2532 yearsG1763.
11 I am afraid for you, that I might have wasted my labor for you.
KJVI am afraidG5399(G5736) of youG5209, lestG3381G4458 I have bestowedG2872 uponG1519 youG5209 labourG2872(G5758) in vainG1500.
12 I beg you, brothers, become as I am, for I also have become as you are. You did me no wrong,
KJVBrethrenG80, I beseechG1189(G5736) youG5216, beG1096(G5737) asG5613 IG1473 am; forG3754 IG2504 am asG5613 yeG5210 are: ye have not injuredG91(G5656) meG3165 at allG3762.
13 but you know that because of weakness in the flesh I preached the Good News to you the first time.
KJVG1161 Ye knowG1492(G5758) howG3754 throughG1223 infirmityG769 of the fleshG4561 I preached the gospelG2097(G5668) unto youG5213 at the firstG4386.
14 That which was a temptation to you in my flesh, you didn’t despise nor reject; but you received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus.
KJVAndG2532 myG3450 temptationG3986 which was inG1722 myG3450 fleshG4561 ye despisedG1848(G5656) notG3756, norG3761 rejectedG1609(G5656); butG235 receivedG1209(G5662) meG3165 asG5613 an angelG32 of GodG2316, even asG5613 ChristG5547 JesusG2424.
15 What was the blessing you enjoyed? For I testify to you that, if possible, you would have plucked out your eyes and given them to me.
KJVWhereG5101 isG2258(G5713) thenG3767 the blessednessG3108 yeG5216 spake of? forG1063 I bearG3140 youG5213 recordG3140(G5719), thatG3754, ifG1487 it had been possibleG1415, ye would have plucked outG1846(G5660) yourG5216 own eyesG3788, and have given themG302G1325(G5656) to meG3427.
16 So then, have I become your enemy by telling you the truth?
KJVAm IG1096 thereforeG5620 becomeG1096(G5754) yourG5216 enemyG2190, because I tellG226 youG5213 the truthG226(G5723)?
17 They zealously seek you in no good way. No, they desire to alienate you, that you may seek them.
KJVThey zealously affectG2206(G5719) youG5209, but notG3756 wellG2573; yeaG235, they wouldG2309(G5719) excludeG1576(G5658) youG5209, thatG2443 ye might affectG2206(G5725) themG846.
18 But it is always good to be zealous in a good cause, and not only when I am present with you.
KJVButG1161 it is goodG2570 to be zealously affectedG2206(G5745) alwaysG3842 inG1722 a goodG2570 thing, andG2532 notG3361 onlyG3440 whenG1722 IG3165 am presentG3918(G5750) withG4314 youG5209.
19 My little children, of whom I am again in travail until Christ is formed in you—
KJVMyG3450 little childrenG5040, of whomG3739 I travail in birthG5605(G5719) againG3825 untilG891G3739 ChristG5547 be formedG3445(G5686) inG1722 youG5213,
20 but I could wish to be present with you now, and to change my tone, for I am perplexed about you.
KJVG1161 I desireG2309(G5707) to be presentG3918(G5750) withG4314 youG5209 nowG737, andG2532 to changeG236(G5658) myG3450 voiceG5456; forG3754 I stand in doubtG639(G5731) ofG1722 youG5213.
21 Tell me, you that desire to be under the law, don’t you listen to the law?
KJVTellG3004(G5720) meG3427, ye that desireG2309(G5723) to beG1511(G5750) underG5259 the lawG3551, do yeG191 notG3756 hearG191(G5719) the lawG3551?
22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the servant, and one by the free woman.
KJVForG1063 it is writtenG1125(G5769), thatG3754 AbrahamG11 hadG2192(G5627) twoG1417 sonsG5207, the oneG1520 byG1537 a bondmaidG3814,G2532 the otherG1520 byG1537 a freewomanG1658.
23 However, the son by the servant was born according to the flesh, but the son by the free woman was born through promise.
KJVButG235 heG3303 who was ofG1537 the bondwomanG3814 was bornG1080(G5769) afterG2596 the fleshG4561; butG1161 he ofG1537 the freewomanG1658 was byG1223 promiseG1860.
24 These things contain an allegory, for these are two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children to bondage, which is Hagar.
KJVWhich thingsG3748 areG2076(G5748) an allegoryG238(G5746): forG1063 theseG3778 areG1526(G5748) the twoG1417 covenantsG1242; the oneG3391G3303 fromG575 the mountG3735 SinaiG4614, which genderethG1080(G5723) toG1519 bondageG1397, whichG3748 isG2076(G5748) AgarG28.
25 For this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia, and answers to the Jerusalem that exists now, for she is in bondage with her children.
KJVForG1063 this AgarG28 isG2076(G5748) mountG3735 SinaiG4614 inG1722 ArabiaG688, andG1161 answerethG4960(G5719) to JerusalemG2419 whichG3588 now isG3568, andG1161 is in bondageG1398(G5719) withG3326 herG846 childrenG5043.
26 But the Jerusalem that is above is free, which is the mother of us all.
KJVButG1161 JerusalemG2419 which is aboveG507 isG2076(G5748) freeG1658, whichG3748 isG2076(G5748) the motherG3384 of usG2257 allG3956.
27 For it is written, “Rejoice, you barren who don’t bear. Break out and shout, you who don’t travail. For the desolate women have more children than her who has a husband.”
KJVForG1063 it is writtenG1125(G5769), RejoiceG2165(G5682), thou barrenG4723 that bearestG5088(G5723) notG3756; break forthG4486(G5657) andG2532 cryG994(G5657), thou that travailestG5605(G5723) notG3756: forG3754 the desolateG2048 hath many moreG4183 childrenG5043 thanG3123G2228 she which hathG2192(G5723) an husbandG435.
28 Now we, brothers, as Isaac was, are children of promise.
KJVNowG1161 weG2249, brethrenG80, asG2596 IsaacG2464 wasG2596, areG2070(G5748) the childrenG5043 of promiseG1860.
29 But as then, he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, so also it is now.
KJVButG235 asG5618 thenG5119 he that was bornG1080(G5685) afterG2596 the fleshG4561 persecutedG1377(G5707) him that was born afterG2596 the SpiritG4151, evenG2532 soG3779 it is nowG3568.
30 However, what does the Scripture say? “Throw out the servant and her son, for the son of the servant will not inherit with the son of the free woman.”
KJVNeverthelessG235 whatG5101 saithG3004(G5719) the scriptureG1124? Cast outG1544(G5628) the bondwomanG3814 andG2532 herG846 sonG5207: forG1063 the sonG5207 of the bondwomanG3814 shallG2816 notG3364 be heirG2816(G5661) withG3326 the sonG5207 of the freewomanG1658.
31 So then, brothers, we are not children of a servant, but of the free woman.
KJVSo thenG686, brethrenG80, we areG2070(G5748) notG3756 childrenG5043 of the bondwomanG3814, butG235 of the freeG1658.
