Deuteronomy 2
WEB·Deuteronomy 2
1Then we turned, and took our journey into the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea, as Yahweh spoke to me; and we encircled Mount Seir many days.
KJVThen we turnedH6437(H8799), and took our journeyH5265(H8799) into the wildernessH4057 by the wayH1870 of the RedH5488 seaH3220, as the LORDH3068 spakeH1696(H8765) unto me: and we compassedH5437(H8799) mountH2022 SeirH8165 manyH7227 daysH3117.
2 Yahweh spoke to me, saying,
KJVAnd the LORDH3068 spakeH559(H8799) unto me, sayingH559(H8800),
3 “You have encircled this mountain long enough. Turn northward.
KJVYe have compassedH5437(H8800) this mountainH2022 long enoughH7227: turnH6437(H8798) you northwardH6828.
4 Command the people, saying, ‘You are to pass through the border of your brothers, the children of Esau, who dwell in Seir; and they will be afraid of you. Therefore be careful.
KJVAnd commandH6680(H8761) thou the peopleH5971, sayingH559(H8800), Ye are to passH5674(H8802) through the coastH1366 of your brethrenH251 the childrenH1121 of EsauH6215, which dwellH3427(H8802) in SeirH8165; and they shall be afraidH3372(H8799) of you: take ye goodH3966 heedH8104(H8738) unto yourselves therefore:
5 Don’t contend with them; for I will not give you any of their land, no, not so much as for the sole of the foot to tread on, because I have given Mount Seir to Esau for a possession.
KJVMeddleH1624(H8691) not with them; for I will not giveH5414(H8799) you of their landH776, no, not so much as a footH7272 breadthH4096H3709; because I have givenH5414(H8804) mountH2022 SeirH8165 unto EsauH6215 for a possessionH3425.
6 You shall purchase food from them for money, that you may eat. You shall also buy water from them for money, that you may drink.’”
KJVYe shall buyH7666(H8799) meatH400 of them for moneyH3701, that ye may eatH398(H8804); and ye shall also buyH3739(H8799) waterH4325 of them for moneyH3701, that ye may drinkH8354(H8804).
7 For Yahweh your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands. He has known your walking through this great wilderness. These forty years, Yahweh your God has been with you. You have lacked nothing.
KJVFor the LORDH3068 thy GodH430 hath blessedH1288(H8765) thee in all the worksH4639 of thy handH3027: he knowethH3045(H8804) thy walkingH3212(H8800) through this greatH1419 wildernessH4057: these fortyH705 yearsH8141 the LORDH3068 thy GodH430 hath been with thee; thou hast lackedH2637(H8804) nothingH1697.
8 So we passed by from our brothers, the children of Esau, who dwell in Seir, from the way of the Arabah from Elath and from Ezion Geber. We turned and passed by the way of the wilderness of Moab.
KJVAnd when we passedH5674(H8799) by from our brethrenH251 the childrenH1121 of EsauH6215, which dweltH3427(H8802) in SeirH8165, through the wayH1870 of the plainH6160 from ElathH359, and from EziongaberH6100, we turnedH6437(H8799) and passedH5674(H8799) by the wayH1870 of the wildernessH4057 of MoabH4124.
9 Yahweh said to me, “Don’t bother Moab, neither contend with them in battle; for I will not give you any of his land for a possession, because I have given Ar to the children of Lot for a possession.”
KJVAnd the LORDH3068 saidH559(H8799) unto me, DistressH6696(H8799) not the MoabitesH4124, neither contendH1624(H8691) with them in battleH4421: for I will not giveH5414(H8799) thee of their landH776 for a possessionH3425; because I have givenH5414(H8804) ArH6144 unto the childrenH1121 of LotH3876 for a possessionH3425.
10 (The Emim lived there before, a great and numerous people, and tall as the Anakim.
KJVThe EmimsH368 dweltH3427(H8804) therein in times pastH6440, a peopleH5971 greatH1419, and manyH7227, and tallH7311(H8802), as the AnakimsH6062;
11 These also are considered to be Rephaim, as the Anakim; but the Moabites call them Emim.
KJVWhichH1992 also were accountedH2803(H8735) giantsH7497, as the AnakimsH6062; but the MoabitesH4125 callH7121(H8799) them EmimsH368.
12 The Horites also lived in Seir in the past, but the children of Esau succeeded them. They destroyed them from before them, and lived in their place, as Israel did to the land of his possession, which Yahweh gave to them.)
KJVThe HorimsH2752 also dweltH3427(H8804) in SeirH8165 beforetimeH6440; but the childrenH1121 of EsauH6215 succeededH3423(H8799) them, when they had destroyedH8045(H8686) them from beforeH6440 them, and dweltH3427(H8799) in their stead; as IsraelH3478 didH6213(H8804) unto the landH776 of his possessionH3425, which the LORDH3068 gaveH5414(H8804) unto them.
13 “Now rise up and cross over the brook Zered.” We went over the brook Zered.
KJVNow rise upH6965(H8798), said I, and get you overH5674(H8798) the brookH5158 ZeredH2218. And we went overH5674(H8799) the brookH5158 ZeredH2218.
14 The days in which we came from Kadesh Barnea until we had come over the brook Zered were thirty-eight years, until all the generation of the men of war were consumed from the middle of the camp, as Yahweh swore to them.
KJVAnd the spaceH3117 in which we cameH1980(H8804) from KadeshbarneaH6947, until we were come overH5674(H8804) the brookH5158 ZeredH2218, was thirtyH7970 and eightH8083 yearsH8141; until all the generationH1755 of the menH582 of warH4421 were wasted outH8552(H8800) from amongH7130 the hostH4264, as the LORDH3068 swareH7650(H8738) unto them.
15 Moreover Yahweh’s hand was against them, to destroy them from the middle of the camp, until they were consumed.
KJVFor indeed the handH3027 of the LORDH3068 was against them, to destroyH2000(H8800) them from amongH7130 the hostH4264, until they were consumedH8552(H8800).
16 So, when all the men of war were consumed and dead from among the people,
KJVSo it came to pass, when all the menH582 of warH4421 were consumedH8552(H8804) and deadH4191(H8800) from amongH7130 the peopleH5971,
17 Yahweh spoke to me, saying,
KJVThat the LORDH3068 spakeH1696(H8762) unto me, sayingH559(H8800),
18 “You are to pass over Ar, the border of Moab, today.
KJVThou art to pass overH5674(H8802) through ArH6144, the coastH1366 of MoabH4124, this dayH3117:
19 When you come near the border of the children of Ammon, don’t bother them, nor contend with them; for I will not give you any of the land of the children of Ammon for a possession, because I have given it to the children of Lot for a possession.”
KJVAnd when thou comest nighH7126(H8804) over againstH4136 the childrenH1121 of AmmonH5983, distressH6696(H8799) them not, nor meddleH1624(H8691) with them: for I will not giveH5414(H8799) thee of the landH776 of the childrenH1121 of AmmonH5983 any possessionH3425; because I have givenH5414(H8804) it unto the childrenH1121 of LotH3876 for a possessionH3425.
20 (That also is considered a land of Rephaim. Rephaim lived there in the past, but the Ammonites call them Zamzummim,
KJV(That also was accountedH2803(H8735) a landH776 of giantsH7497: giantsH7497 dweltH3427(H8804) therein in old timeH6440; and the AmmonitesH5984 callH7121(H8799) them ZamzummimsH2157;
21 a great people, many, and tall, as the Anakim; but Yahweh destroyed them from before Israel, and they succeeded them, and lived in their place,
KJVA peopleH5971 greatH1419, and manyH7227, and tallH7311(H8802), as the AnakimsH6062; but the LORDH3068 destroyedH8045(H8686) them beforeH6440 them; and they succeededH3423(H8799) them, and dweltH3427(H8799) in their stead:
22 as he did for the children of Esau who dwell in Seir, when he destroyed the Horites from before them; and they succeeded them, and lived in their place even to this day.
KJVAs he didH6213(H8804) to the childrenH1121 of EsauH6215, which dweltH3427(H8802) in SeirH8165, when he destroyedH8045(H8689) the HorimsH2752 from beforeH6440 them; and they succeededH3423(H8799) them, and dweltH3427(H8799) in their stead even unto this dayH3117:
23 Then the Avvim, who lived in villages as far as Gaza: the Caphtorim, who came out of Caphtor, destroyed them and lived in their place.)
KJVAnd the AvimsH5761 which dweltH3427(H8802) in HazerimH2699, even unto AzzahH5804, the CaphtorimsH3732, which came forthH3318(H8802) out of CaphtorH3731, destroyedH8045(H8689) them, and dweltH3427(H8799) in their stead.)
24 “Rise up, take your journey, and pass over the valley of the Arnon. Behold, I have given into your hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land; begin to possess it, and contend with him in battle.
KJVRise ye upH6965(H8798), take your journeyH5265(H8798), and pass overH5674(H8798) the riverH5158 ArnonH769: beholdH7200(H8798), I have givenH5414(H8804) into thine handH3027 SihonH5511 the AmoriteH567, kingH4428 of HeshbonH2809, and his landH776: beginH2490(H8685) to possessH3423(H8798) it, and contendH1624(H8690) with him in battleH4421.
25 Today I will begin to put the dread of you and the fear of you on the peoples who are under the whole sky, who shall hear the report of you, and shall tremble and be in anguish because of you.”
KJVThis dayH3117 will I beginH2490(H8686) to putH5414(H8800) the dreadH6343 of thee and the fearH3374 of thee upon the nationsH6440H5971 that are under the whole heavenH8064, who shall hearH8085(H8799) reportH8088 of thee, and shall trembleH7264(H8804), and be in anguishH2342(H8804) because of theeH6440.
26 I sent messengers out of the wilderness of Kedemoth to Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying,
KJVAnd I sentH7971(H8799) messengersH4397 out of the wildernessH4057 of KedemothH6932 unto SihonH5511 kingH4428 of HeshbonH2809 with wordsH1697 of peaceH7965, sayingH559(H8800),
27 “Let me pass through your land. I will go along by the highway. I will turn neither to the right hand nor to the left.
KJVLet me passH5674(H8799) through thy landH776: I will goH3212(H8799) along by the high wayH1870H1870, I will neither turnH5493(H8799) unto the right handH3225 nor to the leftH8040.
28 You shall sell me food for money, that I may eat; and give me water for money, that I may drink. Just let me pass through on my feet,
KJVThou shalt sellH7666(H8686) me meatH400 for moneyH3701, that I may eatH398(H8804); and giveH5414(H8799) me waterH4325 for moneyH3701, that I may drinkH8354(H8804): only I will pass throughH5674(H8799) on my feetH7272;
29 as the children of Esau who dwell in Seir, and the Moabites who dwell in Ar, did to me, until I pass over the Jordan into the land which Yahweh our God gives us.”
KJV(As the childrenH1121 of EsauH6215 which dwellH3427(H8802) in SeirH8165, and the MoabitesH4125 which dwellH3427(H8802) in ArH6144, didH6213(H8804) unto me;) until I shall pass overH5674(H8799) JordanH3383 into the landH776 which the LORDH3068 our GodH430 givethH5414(H8802) us.
30 But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him, for Yahweh your God hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, that he might deliver him into your hand, as it is today.
KJVBut SihonH5511 kingH4428 of HeshbonH2809 wouldH14(H8804) not let us passH5674(H8687) by him: for the LORDH3068 thy GodH430 hardenedH7185(H8689) his spiritH7307, and made his heartH3824 obstinateH553(H8765), that he might deliverH5414(H8800) him into thy handH3027, as appeareth this dayH3117.
31 Yahweh said to me, “Behold, I have begun to deliver up Sihon and his land before you. Begin to possess, that you may inherit his land.”
KJVAnd the LORDH3068 saidH559(H8799) unto me, BeholdH7200(H8798), I have begunH2490(H8689) to giveH5414(H8800) SihonH5511 and his landH776 beforeH6440 thee: beginH2490(H8685) to possessH3423(H8798), that thou mayest inheritH3423(H8800) his landH776.
32 Then Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at Jahaz.
KJVThen SihonH5511 came outH3318(H8799) againstH7125(H8800) us, he and all his peopleH5971, to fightH4421 at JahazH3096.
33 Yahweh our God delivered him up before us; and we struck him, his sons, and all his people.
KJVAnd the LORDH3068 our GodH430 deliveredH5414(H8799) him beforeH6440 us; and we smoteH5221(H8686) him, and his sonsH1121, and all his peopleH5971.
34 We took all his cities at that time, and utterly destroyed every inhabited city, with the women and the little ones. We left no one remaining.
KJVAnd we tookH3920(H8799) all his citiesH5892 at that timeH6256, and utterly destroyedH2763(H8686) the menH4962, and the womenH802, and the little onesH2945, of every cityH5892, we leftH7604(H8689) none to remainH8300:
35 Only the livestock we took for plunder for ourselves, with the plunder of the cities which we had taken.
KJVOnly the cattleH929 we took for a preyH962(H8804) unto ourselves, and the spoilH7998 of the citiesH5892 which we tookH3920(H8804).
36 From Aroer, which is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, and the city that is in the valley, even to Gilead, there was not a city too high for us. Yahweh our God delivered up all before us.
KJVFrom AroerH6177, which is by the brinkH8193 of the riverH5158 of ArnonH769, and from the cityH5892 that is by the riverH5158, even unto GileadH1568, there was not one cityH7151 too strongH7682(H8804) for us: the LORDH3068 our GodH430 deliveredH5414(H8804) all unto usH6440:
37 Only to the land of the children of Ammon you didn’t come near: all the banks of the river Jabbok, and the cities of the hill country, and wherever Yahweh our God forbade us.
KJVOnly unto the landH776 of the childrenH1121 of AmmonH5983 thou camestH7126(H8804) not, nor unto any placeH3027 of the riverH5158 JabbokH2999, nor unto the citiesH5892 in the mountainsH2022, nor unto whatsoever the LORDH3068 our GodH430 forbadH6680(H8765) us.
