¹These are the words of the covenant which Yahweh commanded Moses to make with the children of Israel in the land of Moab, in addition to the covenant which he made with them in Horeb.

² Moses called to all Israel, and said to them: Your eyes have seen all that Yahweh did in the land of Egypt to Pharaoh, and to all his servants, and to all his land;

³ the great trials which your eyes saw, the signs, and those great wonders.

⁴ But Yahweh has not given you a heart to know, eyes to see, and ears to hear, to this day.

⁵ I have led you forty years in the wilderness. Your clothes have not grown old on you, and your sandals have not grown old on your feet.

⁶ You have not eaten bread, neither have you drunk wine or strong drink, that you may know that I am Yahweh your God.

⁷ When you came to this place, Sihon the king of Heshbon and Og the king of Bashan came out against us to battle, and we struck them.

⁸ We took their land, and gave it for an inheritance to the Reubenites, and to the Gadites, and to the half-tribe of the Manassites.

⁹ Therefore keep the words of this covenant and do them, that you may prosper in all that you do.

¹⁰ All of you stand today in the presence of Yahweh your God: your heads, your tribes, your elders, and your officers, even all the men of Israel,

¹¹ your little ones, your wives, and the foreigners who are in the middle of your camps, from the one who cuts your wood to the one who draws your water,

¹² that you may enter into the covenant of Yahweh your God, and into his oath, which Yahweh your God makes with you today,

KJVThat thou shouldest enter^H5674^(H8800) into covenant^H1285 with the LORD^H3068 thy God^H430, and into his oath^H423, which the LORD^H3068 thy God^H430 maketh^H3772^(H8802) with thee this day^H3117:

¹³ that he may establish you today as his people, and that he may be your God, as he spoke to you and as he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

¹⁴ Neither do I make this covenant and this oath with you only,

¹⁵ but with those who stand here with us today before Yahweh our God, and also with those who are not here with us today

KJVBut with him that standeth^H5975^(H8802) here with us this^H3426 day^H3117 before^H6440 the LORD^H3068 our God^H430, and also with him that is not here with us this day^H3117:

¹⁶ (for you know how we lived in the land of Egypt, and how we came through the middle of the nations through which you passed;

KJV(For ye know^H3045^(H8804) how we have dwelt^H3427^(H8804) in the land^H776 of Egypt^H4714; and how we came^H5674^(H8804) through^H7130 the nations^H1471 which ye passed by^H5674^(H8804);

¹⁷ and you have seen their abominations and their idols of wood, stone, silver, and gold, which were among them);

KJVAnd ye have seen^H7200^(H8799) their abominations^H8251, and their idols^H1544, wood^H6086 and stone^H68, silver^H3701 and gold^H2091, which were among them:)

¹⁸ lest there should be among you man, woman, family, or tribe whose heart turns away today from Yahweh our God, to go to serve the gods of those nations; lest there should be among you a root that produces bitter poison;

KJVLest there should be^H3426 among you man^H376, or woman^H802, or family^H4940, or tribe^H7626, whose heart^H3824 turneth away^H6437^(H8802) this day^H3117 from the LORD^H3068 our God^H430, to go^H3212^(H8800) and serve^H5647^(H8800) the gods^H430 of these nations^H1471; lest there should be^H3426 among you a root^H8328 that beareth^H6509^(H8802) gall^H7219 and wormwood^H3939;

¹⁹ and it happen, when he hears the words of this curse, that he bless himself in his heart, saying, “I shall have peace, though I walk in the stubbornness of my heart,” to destroy the moist with the dry.

KJVAnd it come to pass, when he heareth^H8085^(H8800) the words^H1697 of this curse^H423, that he bless^H1288^(H8694) himself in his heart^H3824, saying^H559^(H8800), I shall have peace^H7965, though^H3588 I walk^H3212^(H8799) in the imagination^H8307 of mine heart^H3820, to add^H5595^(H8800) drunkenness^H7302 to thirst^H6771:

²⁰ Yahweh will not pardon him, but then Yahweh’s anger and his jealousy will smoke against that man, and all the curse that is written in this book will fall on him, and Yahweh will blot out his name from under the sky.

KJVThe LORD^H3068 will^H14^(H8799) not spare^H5545^(H8800) him, but then the anger^H639 of the LORD^H3068 and his jealousy^H7068 shall smoke^H6225^(H8799) against that man^H376, and all the curses^H423 that are written^H3789^(H8803) in this book^H5612 shall lie^H7257^(H8804) upon him, and the LORD^H3068 shall blot out^H4229^(H8804) his name^H8034 from under heaven^H8064.

²¹ Yahweh will set him apart for evil out of all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant written in this book of the law.

KJVAnd the LORD^H3068 shall separate^H914^(H8689) him unto evil^H7451 out of all the tribes^H7626 of Israel^H3478, according to all the curses^H423 of the covenant^H1285 that are written^H3789^(H8803) in this book^H5612 of the law^H8451:

²² The generation to come—your children who will rise up after you, and the foreigner who will come from a far land—will say, when they see the plagues of that land, and the sicknesses with which Yahweh has made it sick,

KJVSo that the generation^H1755 to come^H314 of your children^H1121 that shall rise up^H6965^(H8799) after^H310 you, and the stranger^H5237 that shall come^H935^(H8799) from a far^H7350 land^H776, shall say^H559^(H8804), when they see^H7200^(H8804) the plagues^H4347 of that land^H776, and the sicknesses^H8463 which the LORD^H3068 hath laid^H2470^(H8765) upon it;

²³ that all of its land is sulfur, salt, and burning, that it is not sown, doesn’t produce, nor does any grass grow in it, like the overthrow of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, which Yahweh overthrew in his anger, and in his wrath.

KJVAnd that the whole land^H776 thereof is brimstone^H1614, and salt^H4417, and burning^H8316, that it is not sown^H2232^(H8735), nor beareth^H6779^(H8686), nor any grass^H6212 groweth^H5927^(H8799) therein, like the overthrow^H4114 of Sodom^H5467, and Gomorrah^H6017, Admah^H126, and Zeboim^H6636, which the LORD^H3068 overthrew^H2015^(H8804) in his anger^H639, and in his wrath^H2534:

²⁴ Even all the nations will say, “Why has Yahweh done this to this land? What does the heat of this great anger mean?”

KJVEven all nations^H1471 shall say^H559^(H8804), Wherefore hath the LORD^H3068 done^H6213^(H8804) thus unto this land^H776? what meaneth the heat^H2750 of this great^H1419 anger^H639?

²⁵ Then men will say, “Because they abandoned the covenant of Yahweh, the God of their fathers, which he made with them when he brought them out of the land of Egypt,

KJVThen men shall say^H559^(H8804), Because they have forsaken^H5800^(H8804) the covenant^H1285 of the LORD^H3068 God^H430 of their fathers^H1, which he made^H3772^(H8804) with them when he brought them forth^H3318^(H8687) out of the land^H776 of Egypt^H4714:

²⁶ and went and served other gods and worshiped them, gods that they didn’t know and that he had not given to them.

KJVFor they went^H3212^(H8799) and served^H5647^(H8799) other^H312 gods^H430, and worshipped^H7812^(H8691) them, gods^H430 whom they knew^H3045^(H8804) not, and whom he had not given^H2505^(H8804) unto them:

²⁷ Therefore Yahweh’s anger burned against this land, to bring on it all the curses that are written in this book.

KJVAnd the anger^H639 of the LORD^H3068 was kindled^H2734^(H8799) against this land^H776, to bring^H935^(H8687) upon it all the curses^H7045 that are written^H3789^(H8803) in this book^H5612:

²⁸ Yahweh rooted them out of their land in anger, in wrath, and in great indignation, and thrust them into another land, as it is today.”

²⁹ The secret things belong to Yahweh our God; but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.

¹It shall happen, if you shall listen diligently to Yahweh your God’s voice, to observe to do all his commandments which I command you today, that Yahweh your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth.

KJVAnd it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken^H8085^(H8799) diligently^H8085^(H8800) unto the voice^H6963 of the LORD^H3068 thy God^H430, to observe^H8104^(H8800) and to do^H6213^(H8800) all his commandments^H4687 which I command^H6680^(H8764) thee this day^H3117, that the LORD^H3068 thy God^H430 will set^H5414^(H8804) thee on high^H5945 above all nations^H1471 of the earth^H776:

² All these blessings will come upon you, and overtake you, if you listen to Yahweh your God’s voice.

KJVAnd all these blessings^H1293 shall come^H935^(H8804) on thee, and overtake^H5381^(H8689) thee, if thou shalt hearken^H8085^(H8799) unto the voice^H6963 of the LORD^H3068 thy God^H430.

³ You shall be blessed in the city, and you shall be blessed in the field.

⁴ You shall be blessed in the fruit of your body, the fruit of your ground, the fruit of your animals, the increase of your livestock, and the young of your flock.

KJVBlessed^H1288^(H8803) shall be the fruit^H6529 of thy body^H990, and the fruit^H6529 of thy ground^H127, and the fruit^H6529 of thy cattle^H929, the increase^H7698 of thy kine^H504, and the flocks^H6251 of thy sheep^H6629.

⁵ Your basket and your kneading trough shall be blessed.

⁶ You shall be blessed when you come in, and you shall be blessed when you go out.

⁷ Yahweh will cause your enemies who rise up against you to be struck before you. They will come out against you one way, and will flee before you seven ways.

KJVThe LORD^H3068 shall cause^H5414^(H8799) thine enemies^H341^(H8802) that rise up^H6965^(H8801) against thee to be smitten^H5062^(H8737) before thy face^H6440: they shall come out^H3318^(H8799) against thee one^H259 way^H1870, and flee^H5127^(H8799) before^H6440 thee seven^H7651 ways^H1870.

⁸ Yahweh will command the blessing on you in your barns, and in all that you put your hand to. He will bless you in the land which Yahweh your God gives you.

KJVThe LORD^H3068 shall command^H6680^(H8762) the blessing^H1293 upon thee in thy storehouses^H618, and in all that thou settest^H4916 thine hand^H3027 unto; and he shall bless^H1288^(H8765) thee in the land^H776 which the LORD^H3068 thy God^H430 giveth^H5414^(H8802) thee.

⁹ Yahweh will establish you for a holy people to himself, as he has sworn to you, if you shall keep the commandments of Yahweh your God, and walk in his ways.

KJVThe LORD^H3068 shall establish^H6965^(H8686) thee an holy^H6918 people^H5971 unto himself, as he hath sworn^H7650^(H8738) unto thee, if thou shalt keep^H8104^(H8799) the commandments^H4687 of the LORD^H3068 thy God^H430, and walk^H1980^(H8804) in his ways^H1870.

¹⁰ All the peoples of the earth shall see that you are called by Yahweh’s name, and they will be afraid of you.

KJVAnd all people^H5971 of the earth^H776 shall see^H7200^(H8804) that thou art called^H7121^(H8738) by the name^H8034 of the LORD^H3068; and they shall be afraid^H3372^(H8804) of thee.

¹¹ Yahweh will grant you abundant prosperity in the fruit of your body, in the fruit of your livestock, and in the fruit of your ground, in the land which Yahweh swore to your fathers to give you.

KJVAnd the LORD^H3068 shall make thee plenteous^H3498^(H8689) in goods^H2896, in the fruit^H6529 of thy body^H990, and in the fruit^H6529 of thy cattle^H929, and in the fruit^H6529 of thy ground^H127, in the land^H127 which the LORD^H3068 sware^H7650^(H8738) unto thy fathers^H1 to give^H5414^(H8800) thee.

¹² Yahweh will open to you his good treasure in the sky, to give the rain of your land in its season, and to bless all the work of your hand. You will lend to many nations, and you will not borrow.

¹³ Yahweh will make you the head, and not the tail. You will be above only, and you will not be beneath, if you listen to the commandments of Yahweh your God which I command you today, to observe and to do,

KJVAnd the LORD^H3068 shall make^H5414^(H8804) thee the head^H7218, and not the tail^H2180; and thou shalt be above only^H4605, and thou shalt not be beneath^H4295; if that thou hearken^H8085^(H8799) unto the commandments^H4687 of the LORD^H3068 thy God^H430, which I command^H6680^(H8764) thee this day^H3117, to observe^H8104^(H8800) and to do^H6213^(H8800) them:

¹⁴ and shall not turn away from any of the words which I command you today, to the right hand or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them.

KJVAnd thou shalt not go aside^H5493^(H8799) from any of the words^H1697 which I command^H6680^(H8764) thee this day^H3117, to the right hand^H3225, or to the left^H8040, to go^H3212^(H8800) after^H310 other^H312 gods^H430 to serve^H5647^(H8800) them.

¹⁵ But it shall come to pass, if you will not listen to Yahweh your God’s voice, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command you today, that all these curses will come on you and overtake you.

¹⁶ You will be cursed in the city, and you will be cursed in the field.

¹⁷ Your basket and your kneading trough will be cursed.

¹⁸ The fruit of your body, the fruit of your ground, the increase of your livestock, and the young of your flock will be cursed.

¹⁹ You will be cursed when you come in, and you will be cursed when you go out.

KJVCursed^H779^(H8803) shalt thou be when thou comest in^H935^(H8800), and cursed^H779^(H8803) shalt thou be when thou goest out^H3318^(H8800).

²⁰ Yahweh will send on you cursing, confusion, and rebuke in all that you put your hand to do, until you are destroyed and until you perish quickly, because of the evil of your doings, by which you have forsaken me.

KJVThe LORD^H3068 shall send^H7971^(H8762) upon thee cursing^H3994, vexation^H4103, and rebuke^H4045, in all that thou settest^H4916 thine hand^H3027 unto for to do^H6213^(H8799), until thou be destroyed^H8045^(H8736), and until thou perish^H6^(H8800) quickly^H4118; because^H6440 of the wickedness^H7455 of thy doings^H4611, whereby thou hast forsaken^H5800^(H8804) me.

²¹ Yahweh will make the pestilence cling to you, until he has consumed you from off the land where you go in to possess it.

KJVThe LORD^H3068 shall make the pestilence^H1698 cleave^H1692^(H8686) unto thee, until he have consumed^H3615^(H8763) thee from off the land^H127, whither thou goest^H935^(H8802) to possess^H3423^(H8800) it.

²² Yahweh will strike you with consumption, with fever, with inflammation, with fiery heat, with the sword, with blight, and with mildew. They will pursue you until you perish.

KJVThe LORD^H3068 shall smite^H5221^(H8686) thee with a consumption^H7829, and with a fever^H6920, and with an inflammation^H1816, and with an extreme burning^H2746, and with the sword^H2719, and with blasting^H7711, and with mildew^H3420; and they shall pursue^H7291^(H8804) thee until thou perish^H6^(H8800).

²³ Your sky that is over your head will be bronze, and the earth that is under you will be iron.

KJVAnd thy heaven^H8064 that is over thy head^H7218 shall be brass^H5178, and the earth^H776 that is under thee shall be iron^H1270.

²⁴ Yahweh will make the rain of your land powder and dust. It will come down on you from the sky, until you are destroyed.

KJVThe LORD^H3068 shall make^H5414^(H8799) the rain^H4306 of thy land^H776 powder^H80 and dust^H6083: from heaven^H8064 shall it come down^H3381^(H8799) upon thee, until thou be destroyed^H8045^(H8736).

²⁵ Yahweh will cause you to be struck before your enemies. You will go out one way against them, and will flee seven ways before them. You will be tossed back and forth among all the kingdoms of the earth.

KJVThe LORD^H3068 shall cause^H5414^(H8799) thee to be smitten^H5062^(H8737) before^H6440 thine enemies^H341^(H8802): thou shalt go out^H3318^(H8799) one^H259 way^H1870 against them, and flee^H5127^(H8799) seven^H7651 ways^H1870 before^H6440 them: and shalt be removed^H2189 into all the kingdoms^H4467 of the earth^H776.

²⁶ Your dead bodies will be food to all birds of the sky, and to the animals of the earth; and there will be no one to frighten them away.

KJVAnd thy carcase^H5038 shall be meat^H3978 unto all fowls^H5775 of the air^H8064, and unto the beasts^H929 of the earth^H776, and no man shall fray them away^H2729^(H8688).

²⁷ Yahweh will strike you with the boils of Egypt, with the tumors, with the scurvy, and with the itch, of which you can not be healed.

KJVThe LORD^H3068 will smite^H5221^(H8686) thee with the botch^H7822 of Egypt^H4714, and with the emerods^H2914^(H8675)^H6076, and with the scab^H1618, and with the itch^H2775, whereof thou canst^H3201^(H8799) not be healed^H7495^(H8736).

²⁸ Yahweh will strike you with madness, with blindness, and with astonishment of heart.

KJVThe LORD^H3068 shall smite^H5221^(H8686) thee with madness^H7697, and blindness^H5788, and astonishment^H8541 of heart^H3824:

²⁹ You will grope at noonday, as the blind gropes in darkness, and you shall not prosper in your ways. You will only be oppressed and robbed always, and there will be no one to save you.

³⁰ You will betroth a wife, and another man shall lie with her. You will build a house, and you won’t dwell in it. You will plant a vineyard, and not use its fruit.

³¹ Your ox will be slain before your eyes, and you will not eat any of it. Your donkey will be violently taken away from before your face, and will not be restored to you. Your sheep will be given to your enemies, and you will have no one to save you.

³² Your sons and your daughters will be given to another people. Your eyes will look and fail with longing for them all day long. There will be no power in your hand.

³³ A nation which you don’t know will eat the fruit of your ground and all of your work. You will only be oppressed and crushed always,

³⁴ so that the sights that you see with your eyes will drive you mad.

³⁵ Yahweh will strike you in the knees and in the legs with a sore boil, of which you cannot be healed, from the sole of your foot to the crown of your head.

³⁶ Yahweh will bring you, and your king whom you will set over yourselves, to a nation that you have not known, you nor your fathers. There you will serve other gods of wood and stone.

³⁷ You will become an astonishment, a proverb, and a byword among all the peoples where Yahweh will lead you away.

³⁸ You will carry much seed out into the field, and will gather little in, for the locust will consume it.

³⁹ You will plant vineyards and dress them, but you will neither drink of the wine, nor harvest, because worms will eat them.

⁴⁰ You will have olive trees throughout all your borders, but you won’t anoint yourself with the oil, for your olives will drop off.

⁴¹ You will father sons and daughters, but they will not be yours, for they will go into captivity.

⁴² Locusts will consume all of your trees and the fruit of your ground.

⁴³ The foreigner who is among you will mount up above you higher and higher, and you will come down lower and lower.

KJVThe stranger^H1616 that is within^H7130 thee shall get up^H5927^(H8799) above thee very^H4605 high^H4605; and thou shalt come down^H3381^(H8799) very^H4295 low^H4295.

⁴⁴ He will lend to you, and you won’t lend to him. He will be the head, and you will be the tail.

KJVHe shall lend^H3867^(H8686) to thee, and thou shalt not lend^H3867^(H8686) to him: he shall be the head^H7218, and thou shalt be the tail^H2180.

⁴⁵ All these curses will come on you, and will pursue you and overtake you, until you are destroyed, because you didn’t listen to Yahweh your God’s voice, to keep his commandments and his statutes which he commanded you.

⁴⁸ therefore you will serve your enemies whom Yahweh sends against you, in hunger, in thirst, in nakedness, and in lack of all things. He will put an iron yoke on your neck until he has destroyed you.

⁴⁹ Yahweh will bring a nation against you from far away, from the end of the earth, as the eagle flies: a nation whose language you will not understand,

⁵⁰ a nation of fierce facial expressions, that doesn’t respect the elderly, nor show favor to the young.

⁵¹ They will eat the fruit of your livestock and the fruit of your ground, until you are destroyed. They also won’t leave you grain, new wine, oil, the increase of your livestock, or the young of your flock, until they have caused you to perish.

⁶⁴ Yahweh will scatter you among all peoples, from one end of the earth to the other end of the earth. There you will serve other gods which you have not known, you nor your fathers, even wood and stone.
