1 Samuel 24
WEB·1 Samuel 24
1When Saul had returned from following the Philistines, he was told, “Behold, David is in the wilderness of En Gedi.”
KJVAnd it came to pass, when SaulH7586 was returnedH7725(H8804) from followingH310 the PhilistinesH6430, that it was toldH5046(H8686) him, sayingH559(H8800), Behold, DavidH1732 is in the wildernessH4057 of EngediH5872.
2 Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and went to seek David and his men on the rocks of the wild goats.
KJVThen SaulH7586 tookH3947(H8799) threeH7969 thousandH505 chosenH977(H8803) menH376 out of all IsraelH3478, and wentH3212(H8799) to seekH1245(H8763) DavidH1732 and his menH582 uponH6440 the rocksH6697 of the wild goatsH3277.
3 He came to the sheep pens by the way, where there was a cave; and Saul went in to relieve himself. Now David and his men were staying in the innermost parts of the cave.
KJVAnd he cameH935(H8799) to the sheepcotesH1448H6629 by the wayH1870, where was a caveH4631; and SaulH7586 went inH935(H8799) to coverH5526(H8687) his feetH7272: and DavidH1732 and his menH582 remainedH3427(H8802) in the sidesH3411 of the caveH4631.
4 David’s men said to him, “Behold, the day of which Yahweh said to you, ‘Behold, I will deliver your enemy into your hand, and you shall do to him as it shall seem good to you.’” Then David arose and cut off the skirt of Saul’s robe secretly.
KJVAnd the menH582 of DavidH1732 saidH559(H8799) unto him, Behold the dayH3117 of which the LORDH3068 saidH559(H8804) unto thee, Behold, I will deliverH5414(H8802) thine enemyH341(H8802) into thine handH3027, that thou mayest doH6213(H8804) to him as it shall seem goodH3190(H8799) unto theeH5869. Then DavidH1732 aroseH6965(H8799), and cut offH3772(H8799) the skirtH3671 of Saul'sH7586 robeH4598 privilyH3909.
5 Afterward, David’s heart struck him because he had cut off Saul’s skirt.
KJVAnd it came to pass afterwardH310, that David'sH1732 heartH3820 smoteH5221(H8686) him, because he had cut offH3772(H8804) Saul'sH7586 skirtH3671.
6 He said to his men, “Yahweh forbid that I should do this thing to my lord, Yahweh’s anointed, to stretch out my hand against him, since he is Yahweh’s anointed.”
KJVAnd he saidH559(H8799) unto his menH582, The LORDH3068 forbidH2486 that I should doH6213(H8799) this thingH1697 unto my masterH113, the LORD'SH3068 anointedH4899, to stretch forthH7971(H8800) mine handH3027 against him, seeing he is the anointedH4899 of the LORDH3068.
7 So David checked his men with these words, and didn’t allow them to rise against Saul. Saul rose up out of the cave, and went on his way.
KJVSo DavidH1732 stayedH8156(H8762) his servantsH582 with these wordsH1697, and sufferedH5414(H8804) them not to riseH6965(H8800) against SaulH7586. But SaulH7586 rose upH6965(H8804) out of the caveH4631, and wentH3212(H8799) on his wayH1870.
8 David also arose afterward, and went out of the cave and cried after Saul, saying, “My lord the king!” When Saul looked behind him, David bowed with his face to the earth, and showed respect.
KJVDavidH1732 also aroseH6965(H8799) afterward, and went outH3318(H8799) of the caveH4631, and criedH7121(H8799) afterH310 SaulH7586, sayingH559(H8800), My lordH113 the kingH4428. And when SaulH7586 lookedH5027(H8686) behindH310 him, DavidH1732 stoopedH6915(H8799) with his faceH639 to the earthH776, and bowedH7812(H8691) himself.
9 David said to Saul, “Why do you listen to men’s words, saying, ‘Behold, David seeks to harm you’?
KJVAnd DavidH1732 saidH559(H8799) to SaulH7586, Wherefore hearestH8085(H8799) thou men'sH120 wordsH1697, sayingH559(H8800), Behold, DavidH1732 seekethH1245(H8764) thy hurtH7451?
10 Behold, today your eyes have seen how Yahweh had delivered you today into my hand in the cave. Some urged me to kill you, but I spared you. I said, ‘I will not stretch out my hand against my lord, for he is Yahweh’s anointed.’
KJVBehold, this dayH3117 thine eyesH5869 have seenH7200(H8804) how that the LORDH3068 had deliveredH5414(H8804) thee to dayH3117 into mine handH3027 in the caveH4631: and some badeH559(H8804) me killH2026(H8800) thee: but mine eye sparedH2347(H8799) thee; and I saidH559(H8799), I will not put forthH7971(H8799) mine handH3027 against my lordH113; for he is the LORD'SH3068 anointedH4899.
11 Moreover, my father, behold, yes, see the skirt of your robe in my hand; for in that I cut off the skirt of your robe and didn’t kill you, know and see that there is neither evil nor disobedience in my hand. I have not sinned against you, though you hunt for my life to take it.
KJVMoreover, my fatherH1, seeH7200(H8798), yea, seeH7200(H8798) the skirtH3671 of thy robeH4598 in my handH3027: for in that I cut offH3772(H8800) the skirtH3671 of thy robeH4598, and killedH2026(H8804) thee not, knowH3045(H8798) thou and seeH7200(H8798) that there is neither evilH7451 nor transgressionH6588 in mine handH3027, and I have not sinnedH2398(H8804) against thee; yet thou huntestH6658(H8802) my soulH5315 to takeH3947(H8800) it.
12 May Yahweh judge between me and you, and may Yahweh avenge me of you; but my hand will not be on you.
KJVThe LORDH3068 judgeH8199(H8799) between me and thee, and the LORDH3068 avengeH5358(H8804) me of thee: but mine handH3027 shall not be upon thee.
13 As the proverb of the ancients says, ‘Out of the wicked comes wickedness;’ but my hand will not be on you.
KJVAs saithH559(H8799) the proverbH4912 of the ancientsH6931, WickednessH7562 proceedethH3318(H8799) from the wickedH7563: but mine handH3027 shall not be upon thee.
14 Against whom has the king of Israel come out? Whom do you pursue? A dead dog? A flea?
KJVAfterH310 whom is the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 come outH3318(H8804)? afterH310 whom dost thou pursueH7291(H8802)? afterH310 a deadH4191(H8801) dogH3611, afterH310 aH259 fleaH6550.
15 May Yahweh therefore be judge, and give sentence between me and you, and see, and plead my cause, and deliver me out of your hand.”
KJVThe LORDH3068 therefore be judgeH1781, and judgeH8199(H8804) between me and thee, and seeH7200(H8799), and pleadH7378(H8799) my causeH7379, and deliverH8199(H8799) me out of thine handH3027.
16 It came to pass, when David had finished speaking these words to Saul, that Saul said, “Is that your voice, my son David?” Saul lifted up his voice and wept.
KJVAnd it came to pass, when DavidH1732 had made an endH3615(H8763) of speakingH1696(H8763) these wordsH1697 unto SaulH7586, that SaulH7586 saidH559(H8799), Is this thy voiceH6963, my sonH1121 DavidH1732? And SaulH7586 lifted upH5375(H8799) his voiceH6963, and weptH1058(H8799).
17 He said to David, “You are more righteous than I; for you have done good to me, whereas I have done evil to you.
KJVAnd he saidH559(H8799) to DavidH1732, Thou art more righteousH6662 than I: for thou hast rewardedH1580(H8804) me goodH2896, whereas I have rewardedH1580(H8804) thee evilH7451.
18 You have declared today how you have dealt well with me, because when Yahweh had delivered me up into your hand, you didn’t kill me.
KJVAnd thou hast shewedH5046(H8689) this dayH3117 how that thou hast dealtH6213(H8804) wellH2896 with me: forasmuch as when the LORDH3068 had deliveredH5462(H8765) me into thine handH3027, thou killedstH2026(H8804) me not.
19 For if a man finds his enemy, will he let him go away unharmed? Therefore may Yahweh reward you good for that which you have done to me today.
KJVFor if a manH376 findH4672(H8799) his enemyH341(H8802), will he let him goH7971(H8765) wellH2896 awayH1870? wherefore the LORDH3068 rewardH7999(H8762) thee goodH2896 for that thou hast doneH6213(H8804) unto me this dayH3117.
20 Now, behold, I know that you will surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel will be established in your hand.
KJVAnd now, behold, I know wellH3045(H8804) that thou shalt surelyH4427(H8800) be kingH4427(H8799), and that the kingdomH4467 of IsraelH3478 shall be establishedH6965(H8804) in thine handH3027.
21 Swear now therefore to me by Yahweh that you will not cut off my offspring after me, and that you will not destroy my name out of my father’s house.”
KJVSwearH7650(H8734) now therefore unto me by the LORDH3068, that thou wilt notH518 cut offH3772(H8686) my seedH2233 afterH310 me, and that thou wilt not destroyH8045(H8686) my nameH8034 out of my father'sH1 houseH1004.
22 David swore to Saul. Saul went home, but David and his men went up to the stronghold.
KJVAnd DavidH1732 swareH7650(H8735) unto SaulH7586. And SaulH7586 wentH3212(H8799) homeH1004; but DavidH1732 and his menH582 gat them upH5927(H8804) unto the holdH4686.
