1 John 2:28-29
28 Now, little children, remain in him, that when he appears, we may have boldness and not be ashamed before him at his coming. · WEB
The chapter closes by attaching the instruction to remain to a specific future moment, and the image is of a face rather than a verdict.
Verse 28 repeats the command a third time — remain in him — and now supplies the horizon it has been pointing at. When he appears, and at his coming.
The two outcomes are set as alternatives, and both are physical. Boldness, a word that meant frank open speech, freedom to say anything without lowering one's voice. Or being shamed away from him — the verb carries shrinking back, the movement of someone who wants to be elsewhere. The letter does not describe the meeting in terms of a sentence handed down. It describes it in terms of whether a person can look up.
That is a gentler picture than judgment language usually produces, and it is also more searching, since it concerns what a relationship has actually become rather than what is owed.
Verse 29 then turns to a test and states it in an order worth following carefully. If you know that he is righteous, you know that everyone who practices righteousness has been born of him. The righteous conduct is the evidence; the birth is the cause. The letter is not saying that doing right produces the birth — it says the opposite in the next verse, where the love comes from the Father first 1 John 3:1.
And the verb practices is habitual. What is being tested is a pattern, not a performance, which is what makes the test usable by an anxious reader.
