He Who Has the Son Has Life
1 John 5:11-12
11 The testimony is this: that God gave to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. · WEB
The testimony is finally stated, and it locates eternal life in a person rather than in the believer.
Verse 11 says what all that testimony has been about: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
The second clause governs the first and is the more important of the two. The life is given, and it is located — in his Son. It is not deposited in the believer as a possession that could then be inspected, measured, or lost track of. It is held in someone else, and the believer's share in it is a matter of being joined to him.
Verse 12 states the consequence with the letter's characteristic refusal of a middle term. He who has the Son has the life. He who does not have God's Son does not have the life. Two clauses, perfectly balanced, with nothing between them.
That structure has a pastoral effect worth naming. A reader who has spent five chapters measuring himself against tests of obedience and love is here given a question with only one variable, and it is not about his performance. The tests remain — the letter has just spent chapters on them — but they were always evidence rather than the thing itself, and this verse says what the thing itself is.
It also settles where life is found. Not in an idea about the Son, and not in a knowledge the departed teachers claimed to have gone beyond, but in having him. The letter has argued from the beginning that he is the one who was seen and handled 1 John 1:1.
