An Example to Macedonia and Achaia
1 Thessalonians 1:6-8
6 You became imitators of us and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Spirit, · WEB
A church weeks old and under attack had already become the region's example, and the mechanism was ordinary talk.
You became imitators of us and of the Lord. The order runs upward: they copied the men in front of them, and in doing so copied the Lord behind them. Paul says the same elsewhere, asking people to imitate him as he imitates Christ 1 Corinthians 11:1.
What they imitated is specified, and it is not success. Having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Spirit — the two held together in one clause, and the joy is credited to the Spirit rather than to temperament.
The result reached two provinces: Macedonia , where Thessalonica lay, and Achaia to the south, where Paul was writing from. A congregation of a few weeks' standing had become the reference point for churches older than itself.
Verse 8 explains how, and the answer is unremarkable. From you the word of the Lord has been declared, and in every place your faith has gone out, so that we need not say anything. Thessalonica sat on the main Roman road across Macedonia, and travelers carried the news. Paul arrived in new towns to find the story already there.
