The answer to being underestimated is not to assert authority but to be watchable, and the list of what to watch is entirely ordinary.
Verse 12 addresses a real difficulty. Timothy is young and has been given authority over men who are not, and the letter's remedy is not a demand for deference. It is be an example — the burden is shifted onto him rather than onto them.
The five areas named are worth reading as a list: speech, conduct, love, faith, purity. Two concern what he says and does, three concern what he is, and none concerns competence.
Verse 13 gives the public work in three items, and the first is easily flattened. Attend to the reading meant reading Scripture aloud to a congregation, most of whom could not read it themselves. Exhortation and teaching follow from it, in that order.
Verse 14 refers again to the gift given by prophecy with the laying on of hands 1 Timothy 1:18, and the instruction attached is a warning against neglect. A gift can be left to go quiet.
Verse 15 asks for immersion — be in these things — with a stated purpose that sits oddly beside modern instincts: that your progress may be evident to all. Timothy's growth is meant to be visible, which is the answer to verse 12 restated.
Verse 16 gathers it into two objects in the right order: yourself, and the teaching. The man first. And the promise attached is startling in its scope — in doing this you will save both yourself and your hearers.
