Many Deceivers
2 John 1:7-8
7 For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who don’t confess that Jesus Christ came in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the Antichrist. · WEB
The test of a deceiver is a confession: Jesus Christ come in the flesh divides true teaching from the antichrist's.
Verse 7 gives the urgency its reason: for many deceivers have gone out into the world. The first epistle watched them go — many false prophets gone out into the world 1 John 4:1, having first gone out from the community 1 John 2:19. The word for deceiver — planos G4108 — names one who leads astray, and these are men on the move — the guest room is their road.
The test they fail is a confession refused: they do not confess Jesus Christ coming in the flesh 1 John 4:2–3. The Word became flesh John 1:14; deny it, and the whole bodily gospel goes with it — the cross, the risen body of flesh and bone Luke 24:39, the man who will return the way he went Acts 1:11. Whoever carries this denial is the deceiver and the antichrist — antichristos G500, a name Scripture uses only in John's letters 1 John 2:18.
Then the warning turns homeward: watch yourselves. The threat is loss — work forfeited, a full reward cut short. The manuscripts divide between we and you here, and the versions divide with them; the danger does not change with the pronoun. A church talked out of Christ's flesh has not lost an argument; it has lost its work.
