He Remains Faithful
2 Timothy 2:11-13

Four conditional lines, and the last one breaks the pattern the first three establish.
This saying is trustworthy — the formula that marks a settled statement worth repeating, used five times in these late letters 1 Timothy 1:15 Titus 3:8. What follows has the balance of something already sung.
The first three lines run in matched pairs. If we died with him, we will also live with him. If we endure, we will also reign with him. If we deny him, he also will deny us — the third turning the pattern from promise to warning, and echoing the Lord's own words about being denied before the Father Matthew 10:33.
The fourth line sets up the same way and then refuses to complete the pattern. If we are faithless, he remains faithful. The expected symmetry would be he will be faithless too, and it does not come.
The reason given is not sentiment but necessity: for he cannot deny himself. His faithfulness is not a response to ours; it is a property of who he is, and would have to be abandoned along with his own identity. That is the strongest ground the letter offers, and it is offered to a man being told he may have to stand alone.
