The Lord Knows Those Who Are His
2 Timothy 2:19
19 However, God’s firm foundation stands, having this seal: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Let every one who names the name of the Lord depart from unrighteousness.” · WEB
Against faith that can be overthrown stands a foundation that cannot, and it carries a two-sided seal.
However, God's firm foundation stands. The word however is doing heavy work: the previous verse ended with faith overturned, and this one asserts something that was not shaken by it. Whatever the foundation is, it is not the confidence of the people who fell.
A seal was stamped on a foundation stone to show ownership and authenticity, and this one is inscribed on both sides.
The first inscription is God's part: the Lord knows those who are his. The words come from Korah's rebellion, where the dispute was over who truly belonged to God and Moses answered that God himself would show it Numbers 16:5. The comfort fits exactly — when some fall away and nobody can tell who is genuine, the knowing does not depend on the community.
The second is the human part: let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from unrighteousness. Both halves are needed, and their order matters. Divine knowledge comes first and human departure second, so the conduct is a response to being known rather than the means of becoming so.
