Moab, and Then Judah
1 Yahweh says: “For three transgressions of Moab, yes, for four, I will not turn away its punishment, because he burned the bones of the king of Edom into lime; 2 but I will send a fire on Moab, and it will devour the palaces of Kerioth; and Moab will die with tumult, with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet; 3 and I will cut off the judge from among them, and will kill all its princes with him,” says Yahweh. 4 Yahweh says: “For three transgressions of Judah, yes, for four, I will not turn away its punishment, because they have rejected Yahweh’s law, and have not kept his statutes, and their lies have led them astray, after which their fathers walked; 5 but I will send a fire on Judah, and it will devour the palaces of Jerusalem.”
The last foreign oracle punishes a crime against a corpse, and then the formula crosses into Israel's own family and changes its charge entirely.
MOAB is charged with burning the bones of the king of Edom into lime. The victim is not Israel and is not even alive — he is the king of the nation condemned in the previous oracle. Moab is indicted for desecrating the remains of a people just sentenced, which shows the standard here is not tribal loyalty. Outrage against the dead is wrong when done to an enemy of God's enemies.
The sentence falls on Kerioth with tumult and trumpet, and cuts off the judge and the princes.
Then verse 4. The formula does not change, but everything inside it does. For three transgressions of Judah — and the charge is no longer atrocity. They have rejected the law of Yahweh and not kept his statutes, and their lies have led them astray.
That shift is the cycle's design. Six nations were judged by a standard available to anyone; Judah is judged by a standard it was given. And the offense is one of instruction rather than violence — a law rejected, falsehoods kept, the fathers' path followed.
The fire falls on Jerusalem's palaces in the same words used for Damascus and Gaza. A hearer in Bethel would have followed all seven oracles with approval, this one included. There is one left.
