Nowhere to Flee
Amos 9:1-6
1 I saw the Lord standing beside the altar, and he said, “Strike the tops of the pillars, that the thresholds may shake. Break them in pieces on the head of all of them. I will kill the last of them with the sword. Not one of them will flee away. Not one of them will escape. · WEB
The fifth vision puts God at the altar rather than above it, and every hiding place named is answered before it is reached.
The last vision places the Lord beside the altar — the one location in the kingdom that was supposed to guarantee safety. The command is to strike the capitals of the pillars until the thresholds shake, and the structure comes down on the heads of those inside it. Judgment begins at the sanctuary, and the sanctuary is where the people had been going all along Amos 4:4.
Verses 2 to 4 then close every escape in turn. Dig into Sheol — his hand takes them. Climb to heaven — he brings them down. Hide on Carmel's summit — he searches them out. Hide on the sea floor — he commands the serpent. Go into captivity ahead of the sword — the sword follows.
Five refuges: the underworld, the sky, a mountain, the deep, and exile itself. It is the third time the book has made this move — the swift and strong whose advantages failed Amos 2:14–16, the man fleeing lion and bear into a snakebite at home Amos 5:19, and now geography exhausted.
And the closing clause of verse 4 is the coldest in the book: I will set my eyes on them for evil, and not for good. The attention that made them a people is turned.
Verses 5 and 6 answer with the third creation refrain Amos 4:13 Amos 5:8. He touches the land and it melts; he builds his upper rooms in the heavens and founds his vault on the earth; he calls for the waters of the sea. Yahweh is his name. The reach of the searching in verses 2 to 4 is the reach of the maker in verse 6.
