The household code addresses both parties, and the command to the one with power is the harder of the two.
Wives, be in subjection to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Two things frame it. The wives are addressed directly, as moral agents in their own right rather than managed through their husbands — not how household codes of that world were usually written. And in the Lord sets a limit, since nothing contrary to him could be fitting.
Then verse 19, and the asymmetry is the point. Husbands, love your wives. The party holding the legal power is given no instruction about exercising it; he is told to love, which this letter has already defined as the bond holding everything together Colossians 3:14.
The second half is unusually specific: don't be bitter against them. The verb describes settled sourness rather than an outburst — the low-grade resentment that accumulates over years and never announces itself. As in Philemon, the code addresses the arrangement as it stood while placing both parties under a Lord who outranks it.
