Four Men, Loose, Walking
Daniel 3:24-27
24 Then Nebuchadnezzar the king was astonished and rose up in haste. He spoke and said to his counselors, “Didn’t we cast three men bound into the middle of the fire?” They answered the king, “True, O king.” · WEB
The king counts three and sees four — the deliverance is not from the fire but inside it, and the inspection afterward finds nothing touched but the ropes.
Then Nebuchadnezzar the king was astonished and rose up in haste. He spoke and said to his counselors, "Didn't we cast three men bound into the middle of the fire?" They answered the king, "True, O king" Daniel 3:24.
The king is on his feet, checking his arithmetic with witnesses. He needs the count confirmed because what he is looking at will not reconcile with it, and the narrative lets him establish the facts himself — three men, bound, thrown in, on the record, agreed by the court.
Look, I see four men loose, walking in the middle of the fire, and they are unharmed. The appearance of the fourth is like a son of the gods Daniel 3:25.
Four words carry it: four, loose, walking, unharmed. The number is wrong by one. The ropes, the only things in the furnace made to hold men, are gone — the fire burned exactly what needed burning and stopped. And walking: not cowering, not fleeing toward the door, moving about freely in the middle of the flames as men do in a room. God did not keep them out of the furnace. He met them in it, which is what the promise actually says — when you walk through the fire, you will not be burned Isaiah 43:2, through, not around.
The fourth figure is described by a pagan king in pagan vocabulary, and his words are best left as he spoke them. He sees someone of more than human appearance and reaches for the only language he has; later he calls the deliverer an angel Daniel 3:28. Scripture is content to leave the identification where the witness left it. What the story establishes is that the three were not alone, and that the presence was visible from outside — the king could see the companion he had not sentenced.
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, you servants of the Most High God, come out, and come here! Daniel 3:26.
He comes to the furnace mouth and calls them by the title he had mocked. Who is that god who will deliver you out of my hands? Daniel 3:15 has been answered by name: the Most High God, the designation that will govern the rest of this king's story Daniel 4:17 Daniel 4:25. And note who leaves the fire: the three walk out, and the fourth is not mentioned again. The companion in the furnace does not accompany them into the promotion.
The local governors, the deputies, and the governors, and the king's counselors, being gathered together, saw these men, that the fire had no power on their bodies Daniel 3:27.
The same officials who had bowed on the plain now form an inspection party, and the examination is thorough to the point of comedy: not a hair singed, the clothes unchanged, the smell of fire wasn't even on them. Smoke gets into cloth if a man stands near a bonfire; these had been inside a furnace that killed the soldiers at its door Daniel 3:22. The last and smallest detail is the most complete — they came out carrying no trace of where they had been. The empire's entire leadership signed off on the finding.
