Show Me Your Glory
12 Moses said to Yahweh, “Behold, you tell me, ‘Bring up this people;’ and you haven’t let me know whom you will send with me. Yet you have said, ‘I know you by name, and you have also found favor in my sight.’ 13 Now therefore, if I have found favor in your sight, please show me your way, now, that I may know you, so that I may find favor in your sight; and consider that this nation is your people.” 14 He said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” 15 Moses said to him, “If your presence doesn’t go with me, don’t carry us up from here. 16 For how would people know that I have found favor in your sight, I and your people? Isn’t it that you go with us, so that we are separated, I and your people, from all the people who are on the surface of the earth?” 17 Yahweh said to Moses, “I will do this thing also that you have spoken; for you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by name.” 18 Moses said, “Please show me your glory.” 19 He said, “I will make all my goodness pass before you, and will proclaim Yahweh’s name before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.” 20 He said, “You cannot see my face, for man may not see me and live.” 21 Yahweh also said, “Behold, there is a place by me, and you shall stand on the rock. 22 It will happen, while my glory passes by, that I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and will cover you with my hand until I have passed by; 23 then I will take away my hand, and you will see my back; but my face shall not be seen.”
Moses refuses every substitute for God's presence and then asks for more than any man has been given.
Now therefore, if I have found favor in your sight, please show me your way, now, that I may know you, so that I may find favor in your sight; and consider that this nation is your people.”
The request is not for information about the route. Moses has been promised an angel, a land, and success; what he asks for is to know God, and the ground he offers is one God had already conceded — I know you by name Exodus 33:12. He argues from what he has been given toward what he has not.
And he refuses to leave the nation out of it: consider that this nation is your people Exodus 33:13. God had called them Moses' people Exodus 32:7; Moses keeps handing them back.
He said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”
The concession is granted, and the reply to it is the sentence that decides the last chapters of the book. If your presence doesn't go with me, don't carry us up from here Exodus 33:15.
He would rather stay in the desert. A land flowing with milk and honey, entered without God, is not worth the journey — and the reason he gives is not private preference but a question about identity: how would people know that I have found favor in your sight, I and your people? Isn't it that you go with us, so that we are separated... from all the people who are on the surface of the earth? Exodus 33:16. The only thing that distinguishes Israel from any other nation is that God travels with them. Remove that and there is nothing left to be.
Moses said, "Please show me your glory" Exodus 33:18.
Having won everything he asked for, he asks for something else, and it is the boldest request in the Old Testament. The answer redefines the term before granting it.
He said, “I will make all my goodness pass before you, and will proclaim Yahweh’s name before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.”
Glory is answered with goodness and with a name. Not power, which Moses had already watched flatten Egypt, and not splendor. What God proposes to show is his character, spoken aloud — and the fulfillment comes in the next chapter, in the proclamation of mercy, patience and truth Exodus 34:6–7. The glory of God, on his own definition, is what he is like.
He said, “You cannot see my face, for man may not see me and live.”
The limit is stated plainly and it is not punitive. It is a fact about creatures, and it sits eleven verses after the same chapter said God spoke to this man face to face Exodus 33:11, which settles how that phrase was meant.
21 Yahweh also said, “Behold, there is a place by me, and you shall stand on the rock. 22 It will happen, while my glory passes by, that I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and will cover you with my hand until I have passed by;
The arrangement is protective at every point. A place is provided, a rock to stand on, a cleft to be set in, and a hand over the opening — four layers of shelter so that a man can be as near as it is possible to be to something that would otherwise kill him. What he is finally shown is the back: everything that can be seen of God is what he has already done.
