A second register is entered, smaller than the first and taken from the same families, and this one is counted by the man leading it.
Now these are the heads of their fathers' households, and this is the genealogy of those who went up with me from Babylon.
The pronoun is the point. Chapter 2's register was a document about other people; this one is a list its compiler is standing in — with me — and the first person continues through the chapter.
The form is the same as before: a house, a name, a number. And the names repeat the earlier list. Parosh, Adin, Bebai, Bigvai, Zattu, Azgad and others had all appeared in the first return Ezra 2:3–14, which means these are later members of families that had already sent people. The second wave came out of the same households as the first rather than from a different constituency.
The numbers are far smaller. Where chapter 2 counted a house in the thousands, this one counts in dozens and low hundreds. Roughly fifteen hundred men are enumerated here against forty-two thousand three hundred sixty in the earlier assembly Ezra 2:64.
Two entries stand out. Of the sons of Phinehas, Gershom. Of the sons of Ithamar, Daniel — the two priestly lines, each represented by a single named man rather than a count. And of the sons of David, Hattush: one descendant of the royal house, entered without title, position, or comment.
That last item is worth pausing on. A man of David's line travels in a caravan led by a scribe, listed between two priests and a family group, with nothing said about him at all. The book's earlier chapters had a governor named the prince of Judah Ezra 1:8 and a Zerubbabel of the same line leading the first return. Here the royal descent is one line in a passenger manifest.
And that is the shift the register records without stating it. What organizes this return is not a throne or even a temple — the temple has been standing for decades. It is a text and the man carrying it Ezra 7:14, with the families who chose to travel listed by name so that the community they join can verify them.
