Thorn and Thistle on the Altars
Hosea 10:7-11

A king is compared to a twig on water, and the mountains are asked to fall on people who cannot face what is coming.
Verse 7 is four words of contempt for a monarchy: Samaria and her king float away like a twig on the water. Not overthrown — floated off, weightless, carried by a current with no say in the matter. The kingdom that consumed its own kings Hosea 7:7 ends as debris.
Verse 8 pronounces demolition on the shrines, and the detail is agricultural: the thorn and the thistle will come up on their altars. Weeds growing where sacrifice was offered, which is how the book keeps registering judgment — through what the ground does.
Then the sentence that reaches furthest: they will tell the mountains, Cover us! and the hills, Fall on us! A request for burial alive, preferred to what is arriving. It is the cry of people who would rather be crushed than seen, and it is taken up in the New Testament for the day of wrath Revelation 6:16.
Verse 9 reaches back to Gibeah for the second time Hosea 9:9, dating the sin to the nation's worst recorded night and saying there they remained. No progress in centuries.
And verse 11 returns to the heifer, with a change worth noticing. Chapter 4 called Israel a stubborn heifer Hosea 4:16; here she is a trained heifer that loves to thresh. Threshing was the pleasant work — walking on grain, eating as she went, unmuzzled.
What God does is put a yoke on her beautiful neck and set a rider on her. The animal that enjoyed the light work is harnessed to the plow, and the book gives the reason in the next verse: fallow ground has to be broken before anything can be sown Hosea 10:12.
