No Truth, No Mercy, No Knowledge
Hosea 4:1-3
1 Hear Yahweh’s word, you children of Israel, for Yahweh has a charge against the inhabitants of the land: “Indeed there is no truth, nor goodness, nor knowledge of God in the land. · WEB
The marriage material ends and a lawsuit begins, and the three things missing from the land are the three the book will keep asking for.
The tone changes at chapter 4 and does not change back. Yahweh has a charge against the inhabitants of the land — the noun is a legal dispute, and what follows is an indictment rather than a courtship.
The charge is stated as three absences, and the three were counted through the book. No truth, nor goodness, nor knowledge of God in the land. The second word is chesed, covenant love, which occurs six times here; the third is da'at, knowledge, which occurs three times and always in this complaint.
Both reappear together at the book's most quoted verse, where God says he desires mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings Hosea 6:6. The same pair, absent in the charge and demanded in the requirement — which is the book's argument in two verses set eight chapters apart.
Verse 2 gives the consequences as five verbs, and they track the second half of the commandments: cursing, lying, murder, stealing, and committing adultery. Then a clause that describes escalation rather than incident — bloodshed causes bloodshed.
And verse 3 extends the damage past the human. The land mourns, the inhabitants waste away, and the casualties are listed by habitat: the animals of the field and the birds of the sky; yes, the fish of the sea also die.
That sweep runs backward through the creation account, and it makes the point the book will make in other ways: covenant failure is not a private religious matter. The ground registers it.
