This Is the Way, Walk in It
Isaiah 30:18-33
18 Therefore Yahweh will wait, that he may be gracious to you; and therefore he will be exalted, that he may have mercy on you, for Yahweh is a God of justice. Blessed are all those who wait for him. · WEB
God is described as waiting in order to be gracious, and the guidance promised comes from behind.
Therefore Yahweh will wait, that he may be gracious to you; and therefore he will be exalted, that he may have mercy on you Isaiah 30:18.
The therefore follows a refusal, which is not where it would be expected. And the waiting is given a purpose: he delays in order to be gracious. The verse describes God doing what the previous chapter told the people to do — waiting — and the reason is that the moment for mercy has not arrived.
Blessed are all those who wait for him. The same verb, applied back.
He will surely be gracious to you at the voice of your cry. When he hears you, he will answer you Isaiah 30:19.
Though the Lord may give you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, yet your teachers won't be hidden any more, but your eyes will see your teachers Isaiah 30:20.
The hard diet is not withdrawn. What changes is that the instruction becomes visible — the teachers who had been pushed out of sight Isaiah 30:10 are back in the room, and the promise is that they can be seen.
And when you turn to the right hand, and when you turn to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, "This is the way. Walk in it" Isaiah 30:21.
The guidance comes from behind, which is the chapter's finest detail. It is not a light ahead showing the route; it is a voice at the shoulder, correcting a step already taken in the wrong direction. That is how most guidance actually arrives, and the verse assumes the wandering rather than preventing it.
You shall defile the overlaying of your engraved images of silver... You shall cast them away as an unclean thing. You shall tell it, "Go away!" Isaiah 30:22.
The idols are thrown out with the vocabulary used for menstrual cloth, which is deliberately crude. And they are spoken to, which is the one thing the book says they cannot do back.
He will give the rain for your seed... In that day, your livestock will feed in large pastures. The oxen likewise and the young donkeys that till the ground will eat savory feed, which has been winnowed with the shovel and with the fork Isaiah 30:23–24.
The restoration is measured in animal fodder, and the detail is that even the working beasts get grain that has been cleaned. It is the most modest picture of blessing in the book and one of the most convincing.
Moreover the light of the moon will be like the light of the sun, and the light of the sun will be seven times brighter Isaiah 30:26.
And then it is not modest at all. The stated occasion is the day that Yahweh binds up the fracture of his people, and heals the wound they were struck with — the wound of the first chapter Isaiah 1:6, finally dressed.
For his burning place has long been ready. Yes, it is prepared for the king Isaiah 30:33.
The chapter closes with a pyre built for the Assyrian, and the fire is lit by God's own breath.
