Your Riches Have Rotted
1 Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming on you. 2 Your riches are corrupted and your garments are moth-eaten. 3 Your gold and your silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be for a testimony against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up your treasure in the last days.
The address turns to people who may not be in the room, and the verdict is delivered in a tense that treats it as already done.
Verse 1 opens with the same summons used of the traders — come now James 4:13 — but the tone hardens immediately. Weep and howl, a word for an inarticulate cry, over miseries described as already coming upon them.
What is missing is any call to repent. The traders were given a corrected sentence to say James 4:15; these hearers are given no remedy at all, which is the shape of a prophetic announcement rather than pastoral instruction.
Verses 2 and 3 describe the wealth in the perfect tense, as work already completed. Riches have rotted. Garments are moth-eaten. Gold and silver are corroded.
The third item is the one that carries the argument, and it is chosen deliberately. Gold and silver do not in fact corrode, which is why they were the store of value in the first place. The letter says they have — asserting that what cannot decay has decayed, so no form of wealth is exempt from what happened to the grass and the flower in chapter 1 James 1:11.
Then the corrosion becomes evidence: it will be a testimony against you, and will eat the flesh like fire. Rust is not merely decay here; it is a witness produced in court.
The last clause is the sharpest. You have laid up treasure in the last days. The offense is not accumulation but timing — hoarding at precisely the moment the letter says the judge is at the door James 5:9.
