The Fish

The fish is not the miracle the book is interested in; the rescue is.
Hebrew manah H4487 does not mean "create." It means to appoint, to detail something to a task — and the book uses it three more times, for the plant, the worm, and the scorching east wind Jonah 4:6–8. Four times God assigns a piece of his creation a job, and four times the creature obeys at once. That is the book's quiet argument, made structurally rather than stated: everything in Jonah does what God says except the prophet.
The text never identifies the fish and shows no interest in doing so. What it insists on is direction. Jonah has been going down since verse three; here the descent bottoms out and he is carried back up. Jesus took the three days and three nights as the sign of his own burial and rising Matthew 12:40. The Hebrew counts inclusively — part of a day counted as a day, as in Esther 4:16 read against Esther 5:1, and in 1 Samuel 30:12–13 — so the phrase measures three calendar days, not seventy-two hours.
