Six Lots at Shiloh
Joshua 19:1-31

Simeon inside Judah, then four northern tribes — the lots distribute Jacob's old words and the land's real geography in the same throw.
The second lot came out for Simeon... Their inheritance was in the middle of the inheritance of the children of Judah Joshua 19:1.
Simeon receives no bordered territory at all — seventeen towns in the middle of Judah's oversized allotment Joshua 19:2–8, the text explaining the arrangement with unusual candor: the portion of the children of Judah was too much for them Joshua 19:9. A tribe dissolved into another tribe's map is a strange inheritance, and Scripture's long memory supplies the reason: Jacob's deathbed word over Simeon and Levi's violence — I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel Genesis 49:5–7. Levi's scattering became priestly service in forty-eight towns Joshua 21:41; Simeon's became absorption, the tribe fading from the nation's later rolls. The same sentence fell on both brothers, and what each became under it differed as service differs from mere dispersal — the lot executing a fifty-year-old prophecy without a hand touching the scales.
The third lot came up for the children of Zebulun Joshua 19:10.
Then the Galilee tribes in sequence: Zebulun's compact highland lot Joshua 19:10–16, Issachar's grain country under Tabor Joshua 19:17–23, Asher's coastal strip toward Sidon Joshua 19:24–31. The rolls are brief and workmanlike, and their quiet names are holding history in escrow. In Zebulun's list stands Bethlehem — the northern one Joshua 19:15 — and just off its border, unmentioned because unbuilt, the hillside where Nazareth would sit; Isaiah would name these two small allotments as the first to see the great light: the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali... Galilee of the nations Isaiah 9:1–2, the geography Matthew quotes when Jesus makes Capernaum his base Matthew 4:13–16. The lots of two minor tribes, drawn at Shiloh's door, turn out to be the address of the dawn.
Asher's entry closes the set with the era's now-standard shadow: Acco and Sidon on its roll, and the next book's ledger recording that Asher didn't drive out the coast's inhabitants but settled among them Judges 1:31–32 — the only tribe described as living among the Canaanites rather than the reverse. The pattern the southern and central tribes set Joshua 15:63 Joshua 16:10 Joshua 17:12–13 runs north with the lots: title complete, possession partial, and the difference left to a generation that chose rent.
