Rahab and the Spies
Joshua 2:1-14
1 Joshua the son of Nun secretly sent two men out of Shittim as spies, saying, “Go, view the land, including Jericho.” They went and came into the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab, and slept there. · WEB
The conquest's first fruit is not a city but a convert — a Canaanite prostitute who has drawn the right conclusion from forty-year-old news.
Joshua the son of Nun secretly sent two men out of Shittim as spies... They went and came into the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab Joshua 2:1.
Two spies this time, not twelve — Joshua was one of the twelve and learned what a committee's report can do to a nation's nerve Numbers 13:31–33. Their lodging is explicable on ordinary grounds: a house built into the wall Joshua 2:15, where strangers came and went unremarked. What no one could have planned is that the one door they chose in Jericho belonged to the one believer in it.
The woman took the two men and hid them Joshua 2:4.
When the king's men come, Rahab hides the spies under the flax on her roof and sends the pursuit toward the fords with a lie. The text narrates without pausing to grade her ethics, and the honest note is the one Scripture's own commendations force: the New Testament twice praises what she did — receiving the messengers and sending them out another way Hebrews 11:31 James 2:25 — praising the faith that sheltered God's people at the risk of her life, not the falsehood as such. A brand-new faith acted with the tools a Canaanite prostitute had; the book that cannot commend lying can still commend her.
I know that Yahweh has given you the land... For we have heard how Yahweh dried up the water of the Red Sea before you Joshua 2:9–10.
Her speech on the roof is the most remarkable theology in the book's first half. The news she cites is forty years old — the sea — and current — Sihon and Og across the Jordan . All Jericho heard the same reports: our hearts melted, and there wasn't any more spirit in any man Joshua 2:11. The whole city had the same evidence and the same fear; only Rahab drew the conclusion, and she states it in covenant language a prophet could sign: Yahweh your God, he is God in heaven above, and on earth beneath. Fear of God is universal in Jericho. Faith is one woman deciding the fearful thing is true and changing sides.
Now therefore, please swear to me by Yahweh... that you also will deal kindly with my father's house Joshua 2:12–13.
And the faith immediately does what faith does in Scripture: it intercedes. Her first request is not for herself but for her father, mother, brothers, sisters — the whole household gathered into the ask, as Noah's and the jailer's were Genesis 7:1 Acts 16:31. Our life for yours Joshua 2:14, the spies answer, binding themselves by the kindness she showed them. The conquest's first covenant is not a treaty with a king but a rescue agreement with a prostitute — the book of judgment opening, deliberately, with grace.
