The Scarlet Cord in the Window
Joshua 2:15-24

A sign in a window, terms any household could keep, and a spies' report that inverts the one given at Kadesh forty years before.
Then she let them down by a cord through the window; for her house was on the side of the wall Joshua 2:15.
The escape runs through the architecture that will matter again: a house on the wall — the wall that is going to fall Joshua 6:20 with her house preserved on it Joshua 6:22–23. Her tradecraft is better than the spies': she times the pursuit, routes them to the mountains, and sets the hiding period at three days Joshua 2:16.
Behold, when we come into the land, tie this line of scarlet thread in the window which you used to let us down Joshua 2:18.
The terms of the rescue are set out like a covenant, because they are one. A visible sign marks the spared house; everyone to be saved must be gathered inside it; and the responsibility is stated in the language of blood — whoever goes out of the doors of your house into the street, his blood will be on his head... whoever is with you in the house, his blood shall be on our head Joshua 2:19. A reader who has kept Passover knows this shape: the marked house in a doomed city, safety defined by staying inside the sign Exodus 12:13 Exodus 12:22–23. The cord in the window is Jericho's doorpost — salvation localized, visible, and open to everyone the saved woman can persuade to come indoors.
She said, "Let it be as you have said." She sent them away, and they departed. Then she tied the scarlet line in the window Joshua 2:21.
The cord goes up immediately — not when the army appears on the horizon, but now, with the siege perhaps weeks away. Faith ties the sign before the danger is visible, and then, presumably, explains a scarlet cord to a household that must be gathered in and kept in. Her family's survival will depend on how persuasively a woman of her reputation can preach her new conviction to her own relatives; the book later confirms that she succeeded Joshua 6:23.
They said to Joshua, "Truly Yahweh has delivered all the land into our hands. Moreover, all the inhabitants of the land melt away before us" Joshua 2:24.
The report is Kadesh inverted, word for word. Forty years earlier, ten spies saw the same fortified cities and reported we aren't able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we Numbers 13:31; these two return from a walled city saying Yahweh has delivered — the land already given, in the perfect tense of the promise Joshua 1:3. Nothing about Jericho's walls had changed. What changed is the spies — and their best intelligence came from a Canaanite woman on a roof, reporting that the enemy's morale collapsed forty years ago at the news of the sea. The battle ahead is against a city that has already lost, and only Rahab acted on it.
