Three Graves in the Promised Land
29 After these things, Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of Yahweh, died, being one hundred ten years old. 30 They buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnathserah, which is in the hill country of Ephraim, on the north of the mountain of Gaash. 31 Israel served Yahweh all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua, and had known all the work of Yahweh, that he had worked for Israel. 32 They buried the bones of Joseph, which the children of Israel brought up out of Egypt, in Shechem, in the parcel of ground which Jacob bought from the sons of Hamor the father of Shechem for a hundred pieces of silver. They became the inheritance of the children of Joseph. 33 Eleazar the son of Aaron died. They buried him in the hill of Phinehas his son, which was given him in the hill country of Ephraim.
The book closes with three burials — Joshua in his inheritance, Joseph's bones home after four centuries, Eleazar in his son's hill — every grave a promise kept.
After these things, Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of Yahweh, died, being one hundred ten years old.
The title arrives at the last. Through twenty-four chapters he has been Moses' servant Joshua 1:1 and then simply Joshua; in his death notice he is the servant of Yahweh — the designation Moses carried Deuteronomy 34:5, conferred now on the successor, the apprenticeship complete. He is buried in the border of his inheritance Joshua 24:30: the small city he asked for last and built himself Joshua 19:49–50, a modest grave for the man who distributed a country.
Israel served Yahweh all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua, and had known all the work of Yahweh, that he had worked for Israel.
The book's verdict on its era is genuine and time-stamped. Faithfulness held all the days of the men who had known all the work — loyalty lasting exactly as long as living memory of the events. The next book opens by quoting this verse and completing it: a generation arose who didn't know Yahweh, nor the work which he had done Judges 2:7 Judges 2:10. The stones, the questions, the covenant at the oak were all built against that day; the sentence here, read with its sequel, is the Bible's standing case that faith is always one untold generation from extinction Psalms 78:5–7.

The second grave closes the Bible's longest funeral procession. Joseph died in Egypt believing a promise — God will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones from here Genesis 50:24–25 — and Israel carried the coffin out of Egypt Exodus 13:19, through the sea, forty years of wilderness, and seven of war, to the field his father bought for a hundred pieces of silver Genesis 33:19. Four centuries between the oath and the burial, and the burial happens: Joseph's bones are the book's thesis in a coffin — nothing failed of any good thing Joshua 21:45 — and the New Testament files this exact instruction under faith Hebrews 11:22: a dying man's certainty that the promise would outlive the promise-keepers.
Eleazar the son of Aaron died. They buried him in the hill of Phinehas his son, which was given him in the hill country of Ephraim.
The third grave is the priest's, laid in ground already his son's — the priesthood continuing as the book ends. Three graves, then: commander, patriarch, priest, each buried in the land, in soil that belongs to their people because God kept his word. The book that began with a death outside the land Joshua 1:1–2 closes with deaths inside it, and the difference between those two kinds of grave is the entire story.
