Enoch's Prophecy
Jude 1:14-16
14 About these also Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied, saying, “Behold, the Lord came with ten thousands of his holy ones, · WEB
The oldest prophecy Scripture records was preached before the flood, and its subject was the second coming.
Enoch stands seventh from Adam on Genesis's own ladder Genesis 5:3–24. He walked with God and was not, for God took him Genesis 5:24 Hebrews 11:5. His prophecy is the oldest Scripture records, and its subject is the advent: the Lord comes with his holy myriads to execute judgment on all — spoken in a past tense so certain it treats the coming as done. The picture runs the length of Scripture. The Lord dawns with holy myriads Deuteronomy 33:2; thousands of thousands serve before the Ancient of Days Daniel 7:10; the Son of Man comes in glory with all his angels Matthew 25:31. Before the flood, the horizon was already the advent.
The target is the ungodly — the word tolls four times in verse 15. Verse 16 then sketches the mockers small: murmurers — goggystēs G1113, the wilderness word Paul holds up as a warning 1 Corinthians 10:10 — complainers ruled by desire, mouths full of proud things, flatterers working faces for advantage. The men who mock the judgment are, up close, merely this.
