Build, Keep, Snatch
Jude 1:17-23
17 But you, beloved, remember the words which have been spoken before by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ. · WEB
The contending the letter actually orders is building, praying, keeping — and a rescue graded to how far each person has drifted.
The letter pivots on but you, beloved. First, remember: the apostles said mockers would come in the last time, walking after their own lusts — words that stand nearly verbatim in Peter 2 Peter 3:3. The dividers, the sensual, the Spiritless are not evidence against the faith; they are the prediction keeping its schedule.
Then the program: building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in God's love, awaiting the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to eternal life. The spine verb is now an imperative, and Spirit, Father, and Son each hold a clause. Last, the rescue, graded: on some have compassion, making a distinction; some save by snatching from the fire; on the worst cases, mercy with fear, hating even the garment stained by the flesh.
The furniture comes from one scene. Zechariah's courtroom holds the rebuke Michael repeated, and in the same verse the brand plucked from the burning Zechariah 3:2; the verses after it strip and replace the filthy garments Zechariah 3:3–4. Jude has spread one chapter across his letter — rebuke for the devil, brand for the sinner, garment for the flesh — mercy and authority drawn from one well.
