Seven Times for Your Sins
Leviticus 26:14-26

The discipline escalates in stages, and each stage is announced with a purpose rather than imposed as a sentence.
The reversal is built in five escalating stages, and the structure is the most important thing about it.
Each stage is introduced by a condition — if you walk contrary to me, and won't listen to me Leviticus 26:21 — and each is followed by an increase: seven times more plagues, seven times for your sins Leviticus 26:18 Leviticus 26:21.
What that structure means is that nothing here is a single verdict. There are four opportunities to stop between the first trouble and the last, and the escalation only continues if the previous stage produced nothing.
The first stage is illness and failure: sudden terror, consumption and fever, and a harvest eaten by enemies Leviticus 26:16. The second breaks the weather — I will make your sky like iron, and your soil like bronze Leviticus 26:19 — and the futility clause that follows is the sharpest sentence in the section: your strength will be spent in vain; for your land won't yield its increase Leviticus 26:20.
The strength is spent. The work is done in full and produces nothing, which is worse than being prevented from working.
The third brings wild animals and empty roads Leviticus 26:22. The fourth brings the sword, pestilence, and a siege in which ten women shall bake your bread in one oven Leviticus 26:26 — one oven for ten households, because there is not enough dough between them to be worth heating more.
The recurring phrase for the people's conduct is contrary to me, and God's response is described in the same words: he will walk contrary to you Leviticus 26:24. The relationship is not broken off; it is inverted. The one who promised to walk among them keeps walking, in the opposite direction.
And the stated aim of the whole sequence is correction rather than destruction. The escalation exists because the earlier stages failed — if by these things you won't be turned back to me Leviticus 26:23 — which means every stage is an appeal that was refused.
That is what distinguishes this passage from a curse. A curse is pronounced and takes effect. This is a graduated series of interruptions, each one an opportunity, and the text records God waiting through four of them.
settled What this mark means
