The Eighth Day, and the Fire
Leviticus 9:1-24

The system opens for business and God answers it with fire, which is the only thing in the arrangement nobody could produce.
On the eighth day the priests begin, and the order of the first day's work repeats what the ordination taught. Aaron offers for yourself, and for the people Leviticus 9:7, and his own sin offering comes first.
What the whole day is aiming at is stated in advance: today Yahweh appears to you Leviticus 9:4.
The procedure is then carried through in detail — sin offering, burnt offering, meal offering, peace offerings — with the blood, the fat and the portions handled as chapters 1 to 7 prescribed. Seven chapters of instruction are executed in one chapter of narrative, and the correspondence is the point: it was done as it was said.
Then Aaron lifts his hands and blesses the people Leviticus 9:22, and the two men go into the tent and come out and bless them again.
Yahweh's glory appeared to all the people. Fire came out from before Yahweh, and consumed the burnt offering and the fat upon the altar Leviticus 9:23–24.
Everything else in the arrangement was supplied by human beings. The animals were bred and brought; the tent was woven and assembled; the garments were sewn; the men were washed, dressed and anointed. The fire is the one element nobody could provide, and it arrives at the end, after everything that could be done had been.
That sequence is worth marking. The fire does not start the system; it answers it. And once it has come, the priests' standing order is to keep it burning and never to rekindle it Leviticus 6:13 — so every offering for centuries afterward is consumed by the flame that fell on this day.
The same sign appears twice more in Scripture at the founding of a place of sacrifice: on the threshing floor David bought 1 Chronicles 21:26, and at the dedication of the temple built on it 2 Chronicles 7:1.
The people's reaction is two verbs and they are not composed. They shouted, and fell on their faces Leviticus 9:24. Noise first, then the ground.
And the very next verse begins the account of two men who brought fire of their own.
