Numbers 18:1-32
1 Yahweh said to Aaron, “You and your sons and your fathers’ house with you shall bear the iniquity of the sanctuary; and you and your sons with you shall bear the iniquity of your priesthood. · WEB
The priests are made liable for the sanctuary so the people are not, and their pay is the tithe because they are given no land.
The panic at the end of chapter 17 gets a direct answer, and it is not reassurance. It is a transfer of liability.
You and your sons and your fathers' house with you shall bear the iniquity of the sanctuary Numbers 18:1. The danger the people were terrified of is real, and the priests are made to carry it.
The Levites are joined to Aaron and minister to you Numbers 18:2, and the arrangement is stated in the plainest terms: henceforth the children of Israel shall not come near the Tent of Meeting, lest they bear sin, and die Numbers 18:22.
So the answer to will we all perish? is a wall of men. The Levites stand where an ordinary Israelite would die, and that is their job description.
Then the compensation, and it is stated to Aaron personally in one of the most quoted verses in the book.
You shall have no inheritance in their land, neither shall you have any portion among them. I am your portion and your inheritance among the children of Israel Numbers 18:20.
Every other tribe will be given territory. The priests get a sentence. In a book that has spent chapters on borders and allotments, one family is told that the arrangement everyone else is fighting for does not apply to them, and what they have instead is God himself.
That is either the best deal in Israel or the worst, depending entirely on whether the sentence is true.
The practical provision follows. The Levites receive all the tithe in Israel for an inheritance, in return for their service Numbers 18:21 — a wage rather than an endowment, tied to work performed.
And then a detail that keeps the system honest. The Levites themselves must tithe what they receive: you shall offer up a wave offering of it... a tithe of the tithe Numbers 18:26.
The men who live on other people's tenths give a tenth of it. Nobody in the arrangement is exempt from the principle they administer, and the giving runs all the way up.
The closing warning is aimed at the priests rather than at the people: they must not profane the holy things, that you don't die Numbers 18:32.
